View Full Version : Many viruses, popups, and shutdowns

I started getting fake virus pop-ups a couple of weeks ago. I just shut them, but read since then that even that will activate them. Only a couple of days ago did I start figuring out what was going on and where help was available, so it's gotten really bad.
I now have *constant* fake anti-virus popups. They are from a LOT of different places. I also started getting game and porn popups. I got two desktop icons for porn that kept reappearing. I would delete those from my program files, as well as the one antivirus thing I could find, but they always came right back. I have finally been able to run spybot since then, and my PC has worked so little since then, that I don't really know the status of this stuff now, but I didn't see the porn icons the last two times I used the computer, but the sessions were very brief.
My PC and the internet will do a sort of shut-down sometimes - I can keep reading and typing, but can't actually send or save anything. It gives an "encountered a problem" box when it does that.
For 3-4 weeks now my PC hasn't always been booting up completely. (It had slowed considerably by then, but no popups yet.) The last few days it has gotten severe. I get to the desktop picture - the background - and can ctrl/alt/del to use the task manager to shut down, but that is all. No start menu or desktop icons. I restart it until eventually one time it works. Today it took about 15 tries (had previously only been 2-4) before I could get the PC up and get my HJT log. (I only copied the log, I didn't try to fix anything from it.)
I installed and ran AdAware a few of days ago. It found several things. I had installed SpyBot previously, but it got weird and then it wouldn't uninstall correctly; I finally did it, and reinstalled and ran it last night. It did find a lot of things.
I managed to get my HJT log onto my email today, and I am posting from the library. So now I can't really get or check other things the sticky post talked about, like any Windows updates. And I can't check back here regularly. :( It will probably be Monday before I can get back online, as I am not sure if it is okay to use my computer before hearing back directions regarding my log. Please let me know!
Everything I've tried to do with it has been random and back-and-forth, cause I didn't have a clue. (Still mostly don't, but at least I now know this place exists!) But, the HJT log is the very last thing done on my computer:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
HeatherJo, you have a real mess here that you created yourself because you did not read the directions.
1) I believe AVG 7 is out of date, if that is correct (and I run AVG8 free myself) update that first.
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
Get the newest updates and scan the system, remove what it finds.
2) Read the directions carefully, you have posted:
A. An out of date HJT log
B. A HJT log located unsafely in Temporary Internet Files
C. A hjt log that is formatted (word wrap turned on)
Correct those issues by reading and following the directions, post a new HJT log and I will be glad to see if I can help.
Thanks...Phil

Phil, thank you for your reply.
I did read the directions first, and tried to follow them. If the mess you mean is the one I created before coming to this forum, I simply had no idea what was going on or what to do.
I didn't realized pasting into email would wrap it, sorry. And I can try to get an post an HJT log the same day. (It makes a difference that I got it late one night and posted it the next morning (from a diff. computer), without even turning on my machine again? Just curious.) I am not sure what it means that the file was in temp files... I just copied from the log it popped up, and pasted straight into email (so I could have it online to post later, as the PC was going to shut down any moment).
At the moment I don't have any idea how to fix these things, as I can't get my pc to finish booting up. I tried all day yesterday and several times this morning. Is there anything at all you can suggest so that I can get into my computer?
Thank you!

I apologize you are having a problem understanding the directions I am posting. If you read the directions before you posted, then you had better read them again. These remote repairs are not the easiest things to do. If you know someone with more computer experience, you might ask for a hand.
A. An out of date HJT log
Log you posted: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Log plainly required in the directions:
3) HiJackThis log - Trend Micro HijackThis 2.0.2
B. A HJT log located unsafely in Temporary Internet Files
Location you installed HJT:
C:\Documents and Settings\pc125\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\H8UPQ2RY\HijackThis[1].exe
Location in the instructions:
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
C. A hjt log that is formatted (word wrap turned on)
Note: In notepad under Format, uncheck "Word Wrap" Produce all HJT logs like this, single spaced.
single-spaced - (of type or print) not having a blank space between lines.
It is preferable, and the log easier to read, if you do not use the [code] or [php] options.
Thanks
HeatherJo

Thank you for clarifying. I will fix those mistakes next time.
I am still on a library computer, unable to use mine. It still won't boot up beyond pulling up the desktop picture only; no icons or start menu. Do I have any options other than turning my computer off and on, hoping it eventually works? Is there anything I can do to access my computer, so I can download the log?

Not really, malware removal is what we do here. Sounds like you have problems other than malware. Since you have Windows XP, try one of these free forums to see if they can help.

HeatherJo, thanks for the HJT log, that's a nasty infection but we can clean it if you will but read and follow the directions carefully.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.
Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.
It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.
Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.
Thanks...Phil

Am I supposed to install the "Windows XP Recovery Console" and disable spybot etc, as it says to on the tutorial?

You may install Recovery Console if you wish, as explained, if you do not have a genuine Windows XP Operating System CD, RC can be a life saver in an emergency. If you wish to wait until the computer is clean and then install it, I have no problem with that.
As far as Spybot, I have found no need to disable it. TeaTimer, which is a part of Spybot S&D does block changes we must make as we remove the malware and it does need to be disabled. I do not see TeaTimer running in your HJT log or I would have posted instructions for doing this prior to the combofix instructions.
Thanks for the questions.

In order to avoid even touching my mouse while this ran, I adjusted screensaver settings, but messed that up somehow so that it actually logged my profile off when I'd been inactive too long. Anyway, if that interruption made this log not valid, I will run another one.

Thanks for returning your information, the feedback, and getting the Recovery Console installation out of the way:bigthumb: Here is a little information about RC:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.
Please read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O16 - DPF: {193C772A-87BE-4B19-A7BB-445B226FE9A1} (ewidoOnlineScan Control) - http://downloads.ewido.net/ewidoOnlineScan.cab
(obsolete)
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
How is the computer running now?
Thanks...Phil

My computer is running much better. :) I was glad you warned me about the slow start-ups post-prefetch, though!
The only thing popping up now is AGV to tell me it found something, and asking me to heal it. Maybe the malwarebytes fixed that, though.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, you said:
The only thing popping up now is AGV to tell me it found something, and asking me to heal it.
It's possible AVG was seeing that one registry item MBAM removed, but you always need to tell us exactly what AVG found, where AVG said this item is, "found something" tells me absolutely nothing.
The HJT scan is also clean of malware, please update AVG 8 and scan your sytem, remove what it finds and let me know about anything it finds it can not deal with.
Thanks...Phil

Sorry, my "found something" line was just meant to say it was great that so little was coming up; I didn't mean to ask how to fix it on so little information. I didn't realize we were so close to done. :)
I updated AGV 8 and scanned; it found nothing except four tracking cookies.
I've waited for a few hours today to gather some info on these AGV warnings. They have only come up since I installed AGV 8 rather than 7, btw.
While scanning my computer with AGV, this came up. (I couldn't copy it, so there may be a mistake or two.)
Resident Shield alert
Threat detected
File name: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{1CACEB3A-B669-4CFF-9431-03DA5722ED23}\RP302\A0027590.exe
Threat name: Trojan horse SHeur.CJDG
detected on open.
Process Name: C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
Process ID: 1004
I checked "remove threat as power user" and told it to "heal".
I had a second alert before the scan finished, except the very end was ...591.exe
I got another one a little later (after the scan was finished, but while I was still online), it ended in ...593.exe I didn't deal with that one when it first popped up; maybe it bumped itself up a number before I came back?
Each time I told it to heal.
I shut down the net, and after 3+ hours away came back to find another identical alert, this time listing two threats, one ending in A0027865.exe, and the other in A0027593.exe.
This time rather than an option to "heal" my option was "remove threats," which I clicked on. It gave me this message:
Cannot be healed; specified file cannot be found.
These alerts look like the same thing I've been getting for a couple of days, though I hadn't paid attention to the file names before.
I will post another HJT log next in case it helps.

That item: C:\System Volume Information\_restore
is an infected System Restore file, this is what I would like to do.
1) Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2) On the Desktop, right click the Recycle Bin then click Empty Recycle Bin, then click yes
3) Update MBAM and Perform FULL SCAN, I do not need to see a clean scan result
4) Update AVG 8 and choose to scan the whole computer. When the scan is finished, look near the bottom for where to save that file. If there is anything found AVG cannot deal with, post that information so I can see it.
5) How is the computer running?
Thanks

MBAM found nothing at all, and AGV found only tracking cookies. In the time it took me to update and run those scans (and my pc didn't need viruses to be slow, LOL), I didn't get any threat alerts at all, so I think the system restore off/on worked.
Yay! :2thumb: I am disappointed to see there are no cheerleader smilies, so I can't give you a big Rah! Rah! with pom-poms. *sigh* Thank you soo much, for your help and your time working with me.
A couple of final questions - my sister started having fake virus alerts a week or so ago, and is worried I did it by emailing her. I can't without sending attachments, right? Do I need to worry about emailing from an infected computer?
Also, which, if any, of these programs that I have downloaded should I keep? HijackThis, ComboFix, ATF-Cleaner, Malwarebytes - are these things I would ever want to use on my own?

Thanks for the feedback, sounds like you are in good shape. Did you click the word "more" under the emoticons, lots more in there.
my sister started having fake virus alerts a week or so ago, and is worried I did it by emailing her.
This is not a item that spreads by email so that is very unlikely. Also AVG should be scanning all incoming and outgoing. Open the AVG interface
(right click the AVG icon in the system tray) once open look to make sure it says All security features are working correctly and are up to date. Your E-mail Scanner will be green checked Active.
Since I also use AVG 8 free, I will provide a little information that will help.

Not trying to scare anyone, but the internet is NOT a safe place.
HijackThis, ComboFix, ATF-Cleaner, Malwarebytes:
combofix we will remove in a moment, HJT I have had on all of my computers for about ten years, here is a tutorial of all it can do:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html
ATF-Cleaner <<< the best small cleaner available anywhere, yours to keep if you wish.
Malwarebytes <<< the freeware version is yours to keep if you wish. It does not run so uses no resources and is a great backup scanner. Another clue...when junk like this gets on a computer it tries to block MBAM from even being download to help. The hackers know the tools we use.
Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
