Hello susvin

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

You have a bit more going on besides the Vundo Trojan, lets do a few things.

First create a new folder in C:\Program Files and name it Hijackthis, then go to where you have HJT installed and cut and paste it into the new folder, we need to have this for backup purposes.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

This will bring your IE Trusted Zone back to default.

Internet Explorer is needed to run this program properly.
Download: DelDomains (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf) and save it to the desktop.

Close all open windows and your browser
Right Click DelDomains.inf and select > Install
Reboot your computer

Make sure you save the logs from these to scans, I need to see them.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) or Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<-- Don't forget this
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

This tool needs to be run from Safemode to be effective so download it to your desktop then boot to Safemode to run it

To Enter Safemode

Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html)

Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Post the Malwarebytes log, the SDFix log and a new HJT log, if they will not fit all in one reply, take as many replies as you need by using the Submit Reply.

Hello Ken545,
Thanks for taking the time to look at my case.
I think I have done all the steps per your instructions:

1. Ran HijackThis (with System scan only) per instructions and brought back the IE Trusted Zone. No Log file for this step.

2. Downloaded DelDomains.inf installed and rebooted the computer. No log file for this step.

3. Downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, installed and Scanned per instructions. The scan removed some files. For the remaining files, it wanted a re-boot. After re-boot, looked at the Malwarebytes folder. The the log file was not updated after re-boot. (Still had pre-boot timestamp and contained entries like C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkHBRkl.dll (Trojan.Vundo.H) -> Delete on reboot.

Hence, performed scan one more time. Log file generated for this step is attached. It indicates all malicious items have been removed.

Hello,

Actually I wanted to see the first Malwarebytes log, not the one that shows nothing, I really needed to see what was removed.

Remove these with HJT.

If you or a systems administrator set these then leave them be otherwise fix them also
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Is this familiar to you, do you know what it is?
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ftpeula - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\ftpeula.dll (file missing)

If not then do this.

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)

Go to VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com/) and submit this file for analysis, just use the browse feature and then Send File, you will get a report back, post the report into this thread for me to see.

C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\ftpeula.dll

Hello Ken,
I’m still here, had been out for some days. Anyways, I ran the HJT and removed the two files

I did not do anything with the two O6 files. I am not the administrator. Should I remove them as well? Pls advice.
Here is the HJT log:

I forgot to mention few noticeable points. The MS Windows automatic update has started to function. It was not working during the 15-20 days time my pc was infected. Adverstisement Pop-ups have stopped too.

Glad things are better. Leave those 06 entries alone as long as you know you set them.

I wish you would have told me this was a company machine as we just clean home users and not corporations. Read Post #5

Lets remove this with HJT,

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ftpeula - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\ftpeula.dll (file missing

Download CCleaner from here (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to clean temp files from your computer.

Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!
**Note** Go to Options> Cookies and any you want to keep move them to The Keep window

Post a new HJT log please

Hello Ken,
Yes, this is a company given home computer, since we are allowed to work from home at times. It’s not in the company network, and is used for personal use. I never had to login using the admin user for the last 3-4 yrs since I had this pc. Also, there is no support offered by the company for this pc. Anyway, I'm sorry since I was not aware of your policy.

I removed the following file from HJT
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ftpeula - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\ftpeula.dll…

Ran CCleaner .

Following is the latest HJT log.

Hello,

That's fine about working from home, but normally when a computer is networked to a large network it should be disconnected from it before working on fixes.

Looking good, how are things running now??

Hello Ken,
The PC is running just fine. Thanks for all the help & patience.
Do you suggest that I should be creating restore point now, just in case I need to come back to this point?
Also, any ideas how this virtumonde got it's way into my pc?

Good Morning,

Not sure how you got infected, maybe entering a bad site or opening up a spam email ???? I don't see any evidence on your system of any P2P (File Sharing Programs ) :bigthumb::bigthumb: This is has become the latest avenue of attack by malware writers trying to get there garbage onto your system. I would like you to read this...is FYI

P2P (File Sharing ) programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/...ID-theft_1.html (http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html)

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

What I would do is to clean out all your previous restore points as the garbage we removed is most likely backed up in there, and then create a new Restore Point

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

Right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your computer

Turn ON System Restore.

Right-click My Computer.
ClickProperties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Create a new Restore Point <-- Very Important

Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You need to go into the Control Panel and switch to Catagory View to be able to Create a New Restore Point

System Restore Tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html) <-- If you need it

I am not looking at any Anti Virus programs installed:lip: In this day and age its almost suicidal to go online without any. I am linking you to some free programs, only install one as more than one AV is overkill and can actually hamper system performance

AVG Free (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5)
Free Avast 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)
Avira AntiVir® Personal Edition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)

Deldomains <---Drag it to the trash

SDfix <--- Drag it to the trash

ATF Cleaner <-- Yours to keep, run it now and then to clean out the clutter.

Malwarebytes <-- Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

Hijackthis <---Your call, hopefully you won't need it again, if you do you can re download it

How did I get infected in the first place ? <--- Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
Tutorial for System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html) <-- Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.

Dslreports (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10002)

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
