View Full Version : Virtumonde and unable to download HijackThis
I would like to download HijackThis and post here, but I get a message that says my current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded. As part of my problems the last few days, I discovered that my windows xp pro service pack 3 had not been installed and proceeded to install it. Did this create a change in my security settings? I also tried to download Firefox but received the same security error message. Please help. Thanks.
I reset all my security settings and was able to download HijackThis.
I have read the "Before you Post" thread.
I ran a Spybot scan and then rebooted. Upon rebooting, I received errors messages saying error loading c:/windows/system32/oboggwvt.dll and kcpgtqw.dll and the popups began.
Thank you very much for helping me with this. I also ran AVG and Ad-Aware last night with nothing found.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.
Posting additional comments or logs before a volunteer responds, can push you back instead of forward, because your thread ends up with a newer date. Also, helpers may think you are already being assisted because of the post count.
Sorry for the wait, but you can see why it happened. If you still need help and I can get you to read the directions and post the correct HJT log, I would be glad to take a look and advise you.
Thanks
Thank you very much for your patience, pskelley. I had downloaded HJT right before my original post and falsely assumed that I had the correct version. I have made sure this time that I have the proper versions of Spybot and HJT downloaded and am pasting the log below. Thank you for your time.

You have a nasty infection:sad: please read and follow the directions carefully.
1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.
Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.
It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.
Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.
Thanks...Phil
Following are the HJT and ComboFix logs. I just wanted to let you know that as ComboFix was running, my IE browser attemted to open by itself, and I tried to click on the red x box to close it as quickly as possible. The ComboFix instruction said not to open any programs, so when I saw IE try to open itself, I clicked on the red x box right away. A box opened that said IE was unresponsive and do I want to end program, so I clicked on end program and it closed. Thanks for your help.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 <<<< out of date HJT log
Scan saved at 1:39:27 AM, on 9/28/2008
Please take your time and be careful as we work on your computer. You have posted another out of date log. Please delete that version of HJT, it is no longer valid. Please post a new HJT log using the version v2.0.2
Thanks
Again, thank you very much for your continued patience. I'm trying to follow all your instructions exactly, but I am not thinking clearly enough to double check everything. I had uninstalled the out of date version of HJT and then saved the newly downloaded correct version of HJT to my desktop to run the proper scan I posted yesterday. When I went to uninstall again right now, it showed 2 copies of the out of date version still on my computer, so I uninstalled both and saved the correct version again on my desktop.
Also, when I logged into these forums today, I am now seeing 2 versions of the main page...if I scroll down I see the entire 1st page of the forums and then an exact copy of the 1st page as I continue to scroll down. I'm not sure if that means anything, but I wanted to let you know.
Here is the proper HJT log. Thanks for putting up with this very obvious novice when it comes to computers. Thank you so much for your help.

Also, when I logged into these forums today, I am now seeing 2 versions of the main page...
Not sure why that is happening, if it continues, click the Support button near the top then Contact on the left to ask for help with the issue. The helpers are volunteers who have nothing to do with the site software.
Please read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.
1) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

2) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\ <<< update Java, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
4) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jegoisvy.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qumheesf.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\yvsiogej.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\yfilue.dll

Save this as CFScript
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)
5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O2 - BHO: OIN Analytics - {6B221E01-F517-4959-8C41-81948E7F2F17} - C:\Program Files\OINAnalytics\OINAnalytics.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
6) 7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.
How is the computer running now?
Thanks...Phil
Wow, your instructions were daunting, to say the least, but very very clear. Thank you very much. I went slowly, step by step, and below are the logs. I had to step away for several hours in between the scans, but I made sure the internet connection was off during that time. A few things did not go as planned, though:
At step 4, when ComboFix rebooted, I got 2 error boxes that said "c:\windows\system32\jegoisvy.dll The specific module could not be found" and also for "qumheesf.dll"
At step 5, I could not find:
O2 - BHO: OIN Analytics - {6B221E01-F517-4959-8C41-81948E7F2F17} - C:\Program Files\OINAnalytics\OINAnalytics.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [c447358c] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\jegoisvy.dll",b
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BMc7740610] Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\qumheesf.dll",s
and also I only saw "O20 - AppInit_DLLs: avgrsstx.dll" but not "O20 - AppInit_DLLs: avgrsstx.dll ykvpyo.dll yfilue.dll" and since it was not exactly the same, I did not want to delete the wrong file and therefore did NOT select it to be fixed.
I carefully looked at every single line to see if jegoisvy.dll or qumheesf.dll was found anywhere, but I didn't find it. I made sure I was running the correct version of HJT as well.
Also around Step 5 or 6, the computer rebooted again, and this time Microsoft automatically installed an update as it rebooted, but everything seemed to continue as expected so I proceeded to the ATF and Malwarebytes phases.

The computer has been running much better since your previous set of instructions, but I was a bit disconcerted when I got the error messages about the computer not being able to find the "virus modules" at reboot and then those exact modules not showing up in the HJT scan at Step 5 for me to "fix"...I hadn't seen those types of error boxes in the last day or two until now. Thank you so much for your continued help. I anxiously await your next set of instructions.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, everything looks like it should on this end. You should not be getting more error message now, if you do please write them down word for word and post them.
Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean infected System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update MBAM and scan to make sure we missed none of the junk, no need to post a clean scan results.
Update AVG and scan the computer to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If all is well at this point, let me know and I wil close your topic.

Thank you so much for your time and help! I did the updates and 2 scans. MBAM showed no infections. AVG showed no infecgtions, but there were 2 warnings as follows:
c:\Documents and Settings\Jeannie\Cookies\jeannie@msnportal.112.2o7[1].txt
c:\Documents and Settings\Jeannie\Cookies\jeannie@msnportal.112.2o7[1].txt:msnportal.112.2o7.net.7225be6f
I healed/fixed both warnings. Were they standard cookies that Microsoft sets? Also, when I open my browser, MSN is now the default page whereas before I had it set to a blank page. Again, I am guessing this is the standard Microsoft default.
I also notice that when I reboot, instead of going straight to the Windows startup page with the black background and the 4 color Windows logo, I now see the white page that looks like a Safe Mode start up with XP pro highlighted and then it goes to the Windows logo startup page. Is that the way it should be from now on?
Also, I am going to turn Tea Timer and the AVG shield back on now as I assume it is safe to do so. I had disabled them yesterday, I think per the ComboFix tutorial.
You haven't mentioned running Ad-Aware or Spybot. Should I keep those installed in addition to MBAM and AVG? Should all 4 be running?
If you don't mind helping me answer/confirm the above, I would be very thankful. And if everything looks ok from your end, please feel free to close this topic. Again, thank you so very much for your time and expertise. I can honestly say that from a very nervous computer novice, you have made it very clear and easy in your instructions. Thanks!

Thanks for the questions, let's see if I can give you any answers.
Here is information to help control cookies;
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/privacy/config.mspx
Understand that all cookies are not bad, some are used for signin password at secure sites, etc. so you want to be careful to not block or to override for any you need. I once blocked my bank and could not signin to my account until I figured out what I did.
In 5) the RO we removed is why you are not getting the "Blank" page when you sign in. You can fix that here:
http://www.my-pc-help.com/Articles/Software/HowtosetyourHomepageinInternetExplorer67/tabid/103/Default.aspx
Desktop startup: Try these to see what works
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.
3. Select Restore Defaults
_____________
Right-click on the desktop
Click on the Properties item
When the Properties dialog comes up click on the Web tab
If Show Web content on my Active Desktop is checked then click on the page in the box below and click the Delete button
Uncheck the checkbox in front of Show Web content on my Active Desktop
Click the Apply button and then the Ok button

Yes...turn them on.
You haven't mentioned running Ad-Aware or Spybot. Should I keep those installed in addition to MBAM and AVG? Should all 4 be running?Personally I no longer run Ad-aware. Spybot and MBAM do not run and are used as on demand scanners to backup what you have that runs in realtime. They are compatable with all security programs I know of. AVG should be running all of the time just as your firewall.
Have a look at what the experts have to say but you should have a spyware program running in realtime. Once you have read that information, if you have not decided, give this freeware program from Microsoft a look.
