Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

I am having difficulty downloading Combofix as VirusScan is stopping it from being saved locally. I don't see anything about disabling VirusScan in the instructions, but should I be doing this to get Combofix onto the system?

Temporarily disabled VirusScan so I could download Combofix. I await your further advice. Logs for Combofix and HJT shown below:

You have a pretty infected computer here. Thanks for returning your information, read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

C:\sqmdata15.sqm <<< items like this I am removing are not malware, see what they are here and how to stop those:
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/453936-solved-question-about-file-sqm.html
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080614191334AAb2d7X
the file association sqm stands for Service Quality Monitoring, they are used by MSN
to help to improve their programs. To get rid of them open MSN then, in the help, select "Program to improve our services" and check "I don't want to participate in the program".

The "Before you Post" directions appear to not have been followed, as a result HJT is located unsafely. Follow the directions to fix this.

1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06 <<< Java needs to be updated, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhwfzh.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ewmnuovq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qvounmwe.ini

C:\quarantine
C:\Documents and Settings\stojicic\Application Data\TmpRecentIcons

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(items may be gone, remove by the CFScript)

O2 - BHO: {a7df7dbb-e3f5-0d39-a1b4-d82d26d83e1a} - {a1e38d62-d28d-4b1a-93d0-5f3ebbd7fd7a} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhwfzh.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2ca0e5db] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ewmnuovq.dll",b
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: plcmjt.dll dhwfzh.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log. <<< see #7 to properly position and create that HJT log.

7) Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

How is the computer running?

Thanks

Definite improvent in how the computer's running. Having been through your instructions and rebooted, I got a Windows Systems Settings Protector error with the option to Send / Don't Send to Microsoft, part way through the log on sequence. I opted for Don't Send and the system then just hung without completing the log on. I logged off and then back on again and the system logged on without any error messages. Use of Internet Explorer is much quicker and so far no unwanted pop ups. The only obvious thing that hasn't disappeared is the odd display of the time / date. The clock in the bottom right hand corner shows TIME: VIRUS ALERT! and the date / time column in Windows Explorer also shows VIRUS ALERT! after all the date and time entries. Many thanks for your ongoing help.

The logs requested are attached below:

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, you said:

The only obvious thing that hasn't disappeared is the odd display of the time / date. The clock in the bottom right hand corner shows TIME: VIRUS ALERT! and the date / time column in Windows Explorer also shows VIRUS ALERT! after all the date and time entries.
That is unusual, it usually goes after the first run of combofix, see this:

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 18:53: VIRUS ALERT!, on 9/24/2008

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 10:36:11, on 9/29/2008 <<< gone

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 16:03:54, on 9/29/2008 <<< gone

So that has me puzzled, I wonder if SDFix (I use it myself but not on this infection) had anything to do with this? See this:
Do NOT run 'FIXES' before helpers have analyzed the HJT log
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=16806

SDFix is a malware specific tool for certain trojans. We know what to use it for and what not to use it for, running it prior to combofix may have caused this and I sure wish folks would read the directions:sad: Sooner or later you are going to run an unauthorized tool that is going to damage your computer.

We will continue and I will post instructions for checking the clock to make sure time is set correctly.

Most of what MBAM found in in combofix quarantine and infected System Restore files which we will rmove after this nextt step.

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Have a look at this information, make sure your clock is set correctly.

Thanks for your feedback.

The interesting thing about the date is it only seems to be affecting one user profile. I set up a local user to run the clean up, and the clock and date display is fine on this account. However, when logged into the original domain account, the VIRUS ALERT! reappears in the clock and in Windows Explorer.

I have also managed to get Dell to send me some replacement OS and recovery disks, so I should be able to install the recovery console when the disks arrive in the next day or so.

However, when logged into the original domain account, the VIRUS ALERT! reappears in the clock and in Windows Explorer.
Try signing in to that user and then running combofix to see what happens.

If that does not work, you might try creating a new "original domain account" and deleting the old one.

If you are sure you do not wish to install Recovery Console, I have two Dell's and the disks that come with them and neither are OS disks.

If you wish to proceed, do so like this:

remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to make sure we got all of the junk, no need to post a clean scan result.

Update McAfee and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean, if you have any problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions: http://www.mcafee.com/us/support/

If all is running well at this point, let me know and I will close your topic.

Thanks for the reply.

I checked the time format in the Regional Settings for the domain user and found VIRUS ALERT! was added to the time format. I reinstated the normal time format and now the clock and Windows Explorer are displaying the time without the VIRUS ALERT!

Three disks have now arrived from Dell, one OS and two drivers and utilities, so I think I'm OK not to install the RC through Combofix.

Since yesterday, VirusScan has detected and removed two remote admin tools:

9/30/2008 9:53:01 AM Moved (Clean failed) NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM svchost.exe C:\System Volume Information\_restore{46DE8921-1D39-44D2-A9E9-64119261F211}\RP288\A0056702.exe\A0056702.EXE RemAdm-ProcLaunch!171 (Remote Admin Tool)

9/30/2008 9:30:00 PM Moved (Clean failed) NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM svchost.exe C:\System Volume Information\_restore{46DE8921-1D39-44D2-A9E9-64119261F211}\RP291\A0056930.exe\A0056930.EXE RemAdm-ProcLaunch!171 (Remote Admin Tool)

Are these part of the clean up tools or should I be concerned about them?

Should I proceed with uninstalling Combofix, or do I need to do further cleaning still?

Here is the key to those items:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore

In the last instructions I posted:

Clean infected System Restore files like this:

VirusScan <<< can not clean those as they are protected Windows Files. Complete those instructions and the issues should be gone.

Thanks

Not quite there yet. MBAM found another instance of Vundo and VirusScan is still not happy with a number of exe files, including Combofix. These occured during the MBAM scan, although MBAM seemed OK about the files. I had uninstalled Combofix as per your instructions before running MBAM and the closing message was that Combofix had uninstalled successfully.

those files have been renamed like that by the antivirus program.
I don't know which one, but it might have been McAfee?

C:\quarantine\ <<< delete the contents of that quarantine folder (or delete the folder)

You should know this stuff if you own a computer, this is basic computing 101:sad:
