Hi Mike, I can not see Vundo but that does not surprise me, it is often hidden and I will be glad to help you look for it and remove it as soon as we take care of this very important issue.

You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.

Microsoft Windows OneCare Live and Sophos Anti-Virus

I am surprised Windows is not screaming at you about this. Once you are running one antivirus programs, then do this.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) Post a new HJT log.

Thanks...Phil

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks...Phil

I tried to follow your instructions as closely as possible. When I ran combofix, i received several messages about nircmd not recognized internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I needed to close the window to continue. Again after my computer reboot I needed to close the same window in order to proceed.

I have attached the combo fix logs and HJT logs.

Thanks again for your help

Mike

Thanks for returning your information, you have a pretty infected computer here and I am not surprised you are receiving error messages. It is important I have the error messages "word for word" I can't research them any other way. Please read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< Java is VERY BADLY out of date and my be why you are infected, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
You must get this up to date and it can be hard to remove old version like this. This tool will help: http://raproducts.org/
This does not need to be done first, but it needs to be a priority!

C:\sqmdata19.sqm <<< so you will know, these are not malware if you wish to leave the junk, remove them from the CFScript prior to running it. Here is what thsse are:
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/453936-solved-question-about-file-sqm.html
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080614191334AAb2d7X

the file association sqm stands for Service Quality Monitoring, they are used by MSN to help to improve their programs. To get rid of them open MSN then, in the help, select "Program to improve our services" and check "I don't want to participate in the program".
Shame on Microsoft for leaving this junk on the computer.

combofix sees RABCO as malware and I do not know the program. If it is not malware, please reinstall it when we are finished.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.

How is the computer running now?

Thanks...Phil

Hi Phil

I tried to follow your instructions:

I think that I upgraded Java ( there were many choice to pick from)

when I dragged the CFScript.txt to ComboFix the program started. My sophos window popped up ( I have included a copy of the log file below)
I got 3 errors messages about nircmd

"Nircmd
Windows cannot find 'Nircmd'. make sure you typed the name correctly, andtry again. To search for a file, click Start button, and then click Search"

After the third message several more Sophos messages and the combo fix icon on my desktop disappeared.

Here are the HJT log from the present configuration of my computer and the Sophos log.

Turn the antivirus program off when you run combofix, do you want to get this computer clean or not?
Sophos Anti-Virus did not protect you from getting infected, why are you letting it interfere with removing the junk?

You need to follow the directions I posted and turn of any program that stops you from doing so.

Phil,

I would like to thank you for the time and effort you have put in helping me. It appears that all traces of Virtumonde and RABco have been eliminated. After I finished running MBAM and removing the hundred and some occurances of the virus in the quartine files, I ran MBAM again and found nothing. I ran Spybt S&D and found nothing. I turned on tea time and started Sophos again. This combination didn't seem to help prevent that attack last time, can you make any recommendation as to what software to run.

Thanks again - the logfiles follow

Mike

Hi Mike, you are moving ahead of my instructions, I have still not seen the C:\CFScript.txt, you are saying TeaTimer is turned on when I specially asked it be left off
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
We still have not addressed the issue of the missing Recovery Console. You seem to have decided that you will make the decisions as to what is done and when. I have no problem with this since it is your computer. I will post closing information and get out of your way.

Thanks

Phil,

I am sorry about turning on sophos and teatime, I thought that all the problems had been repaired but if there is the possiblity that there still a problem please let me know. Before I sent the other log files I looked for a file CFScript.txt but was unable to find one. I have included the combofix.txt ( is this file you wanted?)

Mike

This step is compliments of TeaTimer being turned on early.
We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes.
* Restart your computer.

Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

I would like to look at your Uninstall List:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

and we might as well take a look at the next important step:

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\CF-RC.txt.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC_whatnext.gif

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC_AllDone.gif

To recap, post the Uninstall list, the C:\CF-RC.txt indicating Recovery Console is installed (unless for reasons indicated, you elect not to install) and a new HJT log.

Please tell me how the computer is running.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback.

Uninstall list: I look for any security issues and malware only. (good chance for you to look for stuff you no longer need)

Adobe Reader 7.0.9 <<< out of date and a security risk.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/ <<< if needed

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 <<< very, very old, uninstall it
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

With hackers looking for out of date programs to exploit, it has become very important to keep all programs up to date. Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html

Good job:bigthumb: getting Recovery Console installed, here is a little information about the tool.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.

You HJT log good as far as these old eyes can see, let's do this now.

Remove comofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, no need to post a clean scan result.

Update Sophos Anti-Virus and scan the system, to be sure it is working right and scanning clean, contact tech support if you have any problems with the program.
If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.

Some good information for you:
