i have avg free edition and it updates daily and i let do a good scan about once a week i think.. Once my computer started acting extremely wierd i was given advice from a friend to run Avast antivirus.. i did.. it removed a bunch of stuff. problem remained. I then ran C cleaner it "fixed" 500 someting registry problems.. Problem remained.. i then downloaded a new version of spybot and rat it mutiple times includint at boot. the vitruomode.dll went from 4 to 3 to 2 back to 3 and remains at 3 despite all the scaning and rebooting.. somewhere in the middle of all that i dont exactly remember i let the automatic updates install xp sp3.. oops i think... aparently i dont know jack about this so Thank you for your work and support with this problem. i read the read this first and think i got it right. here is the hijack this file log.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=30113 <<< see this, if you are going to use registry cleaners, you need to be positive you are making a backup for you do so.

This is a Vundo infection, before we start you have this issue:

You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."

Avast4 & AVG7 <<< uninstall one of those.
If you should keep AVG, you need to update:
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition

When you are running one antivirus program, update it and scan the system removing what it finds. When that is done, do this:

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) Post a new HJT log.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, I see leftovers from the infection but since much of virtumonde hides from HJT, let's have combofix take a look.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks...Phil

the computer is faster and seems stable. If there is anything i can remove to streamline this machine i would like to do it. I only use google as a homepage. I dont use any toolbar helpers. I would prefer if nothing ran on its own accept the normal required windows stuff. I also have an issue with my sound card. It does not start, but i can make it start my disabling and re-enabling it. If you can help with these thing thats great. If not I understand and thank you for your help. Are there any other things i should check, and when we are done is it ok to remove all of the tools you had me use, of course keeping sp&d and avast...those two can work together right?

THANK YOU!

obviously i need and want many of those things, but surely i can get rid of some. I will also be reading the info on the sites you recomended and carefuly reading blackvipers info. I turned on the teatimer after completing all of the things you asked and it ask me so many allow dont allow qustions i finannly turned it back off. actually i stoped the process in task manager because i didnt know the right answer as to which changes to allow or not and did not want to undo any of the fixing/crap removal. The computer seems to run smooth now and i have not seen it do anything wierd. Now I want to scan a couple of external drives I own that have been connected to this machine. Although since i day i knew it was infected for sure and acted really wierd i have not attached either of them. I want to make sure they are clean so what is your recomended procedure for that. And what should i have running, protection wise..avast and spybot?...and avast seems to be running but the icons are gone...what is best...

Thank you for being so complete with me on this. Your time is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for returning the uninstall list, let me first provide this information:
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Hackers are using out of date software more and more to infect folks.

Adobe Reader 7.0.8 <<< out of date and dangerous
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 <<< VERY BADLY out of date, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
It can be very difficult to uninstall these old version, this tool will help: http://raproducts.org/

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2.20 <<< uninstall old version, make sure you are running the newest always:
Spybot-S&D 1.6 has arrived! 8. July 2008
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/news/2008-07-08.html
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/index.html

I do not know all of your programs and suggest you make sure you do. When you look them over, uninstall any you no longer use.

I turned on the teatimer after completing all of the things you asked
(leave TT disabled until we finish) <<< exactly when I said this, there is enough stress without more from TT and it will block changes (that is it's job)

Now I want to scan a couple of external drives I own
MBAM will scan them (scans all drives) if they are plugged in when you scan. You should be able to choose what drive to scan with your Anti-virus program, though I have Avast installed on a Windows 98 box I rarely start and don't remember just how to do it.

As we wrap up, I will post links from experts in security/malware removal. Once you have read that information, if you still have question, post them.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, no need to post a clean scan result.

Update Avast and scan the system, both to be sure it is running as it should and scanning clean.
If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.

OK i have removed a few things i dont use and also went throught the C/ program files and deleated old folders that had unsinstalled program leftovers in it. But I cannot uninstall Adobe Acroabt 7.08. Nor can i install the new 9..They both give me the same error. "Error 1327. Invalid Drive e:\" cannot install or revmove. I have no idea where drive E came from I have never had a drive e, unless it did something strange when i had one of my portable drives connected, but im pretty sure they always came up as F drive and i didnt use more than one external drive at a time...I dont remember doing that anyway. The old java 2 gave me the same error on uninstall but that tool Javara uninstalled and deleated it and I Dl and installed the new 6.7 just fine.

OH yeah. while i was going throught the old c:\program files and deleating unsued folders I tried to deleate a folder called Xerox. I could not delat it and got this error. "error deleting cannot remove folder nwiai it is being used by another program or person close and try again"

The other wierd thing is in my wireless network. Under available wireless networks one name FREE PUBLIC WIFI is always listed with full signal strength. I live in a town of 500 people and am quite certain there is no public wifi here. It also says the same thing when i take the laptop to my church 30 miles away. I am still able to connect to my home wireless just fine and any other of my "normal" places i use this machine. How do I get that public thing to go away and what is causing it. My phone can run on wifi and when i turn it on and check it never shows that Free public one. And the computer is not detecting my phone because i leave the wifi turned off and it doesnt work that way anyway.

And mbam... thats maleware bites software right?

there was some other file i found that was wierd and i will post the exact info when i find it again but what was wierd about it was the last used date was like 10 days in the future??? How does that happen!?@#

Oh yeah i uninstalled the old sp&d... i had previously installed the new 1.6 and did all my scans with that.

the computer is running better though and the last couple scan i have done with avast and sp&d came back clean...

Thank you for being so complete here, you are so kind with your time and skills.
