View Full Version : Internet Explorer/Firefox not working correctly

Internet Explorer crashes and freezes when I load it up. I can't even open Firefox. I noticed there was an issue when FF would crash when it tried to load anything with quicktime and the problems got worse.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

I am not sure these issues are being caused by malware so I may not be able to help. If you still need help, I will see what I can find out.

1) Please post all logs in Normal Mode (not Safe Mode)

2) Please post any or Error messages word for word exactly as Windows gives them to you.

3) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, let's see what we have:

1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0\ <<< out of date, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

2) Adobe\Reader 8.0 << out of date and also being exploited: http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/

** hackers have learned to infect the computer via out of date programs, see this: Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested: https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

MBAM found infected System Restore files which we fill clean in a moment, but it also found Trojan.Vundo and Trojan.FakeAlert, please let me know how the computer is running now.

Clean those infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Thanks...Phil

Right now, the computer still has the same problem. I have a very difficult time getting IE to load as it usually just freezes and doesn't load any pages. I followed the instructions for the java update and installed the adobe update in a similar fashion. I wasn't sure if I should gather logs again, so I did.

Thanks for that feedback, I may have to suggest a good Windows XP site, but let's work at it a bit more first.

Let's start by cleaning all of the junk that might cause an issue, see this:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#RDiag

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.google.com/ig/dell?hl=en&...us&ibd=1080312
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/...ch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/...ch/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Page_URL = http://www.google.com/ig/dell?hl=en&...us&ibd=1080312
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

You can set any StartPage/HomePage you wish after this is done:
http://www.my-pc-help.com/Articles/Software/HowtosetyourHomepageinInternetExplorer67/tabid/103/Default.aspx

Here is some information that may help:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378

I asked earlier for error messages and don't see where you replied, it is unusual for something like this to happen without some kind of message from Windows.

Right click MyComputer then click Properties. On the General tab in the lower right corner is the RAM, post that information.

Would you also do this: Open MyComputer > right click the Local Disk (C: ) > choose Properties > tell me how much Used Space and Free Space you have.

I would like to know when you defragged the computer last and when did you scan your disk for errors last?

What version of Firefox do you have installed?

Make sure I get an answer for each question I have asked.

Thanks

Error Messages - There doesn't seem to be any. When I start up IE, it shows the webpage it's trying to go to and the cursor shows that it's busy but it remains like that. I left it go for over 5 minutes and it didn't time out or produce an error message.

RAM - The general tab shows 1.58 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM

Used/Free Space - 41.2 GB used and 253 GB free

Defrag - The last defrag was about 9/19 or 9/20

Scan for Errors - I cannot recall when I performed a scan last

Firefox - 1.9.0.3105 I cannot open Firefox at all. I click it and it does nothing.

Thanks for the feedback, I gave you a lot of information to try, so make sure you try it all.

Scan for Errors - I cannot recall when I performed a scan last
I suggest you scan for disk errors asap. Windows will want complete control when it does this, so set it up at night and tell it when asked to do the scan on the next startup. Keep in mind that scan will likely take several hours and you will not have access to the computer when it is running. If there is any damage to the drive, the tool will fix it if possible, if not you will be notified concerning the damage. Once the scan is complete, I suggest you defrag the the drive at that point also.

Firefox - 1.9.0.3105 I cannot open Firefox at all. I click it and it does nothing.
start by deleting that version and download/install the newest:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Let me know how it runs.

I would like to take a look at a free diagnostic report from here:
Let's run a quick diagnostic to see what it shows, there is no need to purchase anything.
Click: Overdrive scan now for free and follow the prompts. I see the directions have changed since I set up the instruction, but it will not be hard to figure out.

Click: battery of tests
Click: 4. OK, I Want to Run the Tests!
First time? Click New Members, I suggest you register free (they store tests)
Then follow the prompts. Once the test is complete, read the information provided under all tabs and also post a link for me to view it.

Thanks

I ran the scan and defragged the computer. I also uninstalled my previous Firefox and reinstalled it. It actually opens up and I am able to use it, however, it did freeze on me upon startup already. IE still has difficulty loading when I use it.

PC Pitstop (http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/sec.asp?conid=21065979)

I did not apply the recommended updates.

I would consider implementing those Recommended Fixes, expecially updating the Network adapters Driver, that could easily be what is causing your issue. Did you review the information I posted for Internet Explorer? I suggest you review all information. If what we have covered so far does not correct the problem, then I suggest you consider a repair or reinstallation of the operating system.
