Microsoft "Get It Now" Re-Direct

Hi There
My name is 'Raiders'. I have posted a problem in the past and you guys (gals) were amazing. I was very appreciative for your help. I have again re-read the "Before You Post" notice, so I hope I am following the rules properly. Finally, I will try to be brief while still being as descriptive as possible about my problem so as to help you assess the problem as clearly as you can.

My problem, I hope, is a simple one this time. I searched Google for a simple answer but got nothing. When I click into Internet Explorer 1.6, my home page gets re-directed to:

"http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx."

I try to re-set the home page with no luck. In Internet Options, my home page is correctly listed, but the first point of entry is always the Microsoft re-direct. After that, all works fine. I can say this - - - just before this occurred, Spy-Bot asked me about a registry change with MS as the source. I said yes thinking it was a trustworthy and neccessary change. :oops: It must have been this little bit of “advertising” I was allowing … by accident. A scan using Spy-Bot came up clean.

Can you help me? How to I remove this re-direct ???

It's notifying you about "new" IE version. If there isn't any reason why you can't upgrade to IE 7 I recommend to do so :)

Let's clean your hjt a bit too.


Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode

On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer


Start hjt, do a system scan, check (if found):

Post a fresh hjt log after above operations (including IE 7 upgrade if possible) are done.

My appreciation is limitless and infinite!

Let me first go through all I have done with your suggestions and directions.

(1) I disabled Spybot’s TeaTimer successfully.
(2) I uninstalled Adobe 8, found, then installed Adobe 9 freeware (without having to register for a membership).
(3) I then “fixed” those four lines in a HJT scan. I re-scanned and copy below to show you. The problem has been fixed. When I load into IE 6, it goes directly to my home page now.

(4) Finally however, I have not updated to IE 7 … yet. I did a few months back. My wife and I (my wife especially) did not really like it, so we uninstalled and went back to IE 6. Is there a major advantage in moving to IE 7 (security wise or some other reason)?? And can you run IE 7 in a “pseudo IE 6 mode” so that it looks like IE 6, but offers any said advantages of IE 7? We are used to the layout and processes of IE 6. I have spoken to her and she is not dead against it, but I was just wondering if I really, really should move to IE 7 before I do. Please advise ???

Other than that, I think you at “Spybot - Safer Networking Forums” have saved me once again.

Hi

IE7 is safer than IE6 and contains also many features that improve usability (for example tabs). More information on changes here (http://www.windows-vista-update.com/Internet_Explorer_7_changes_from_internet_explorer_6.html). I don't think there's possibility to run IE7 so that it looks like IE6. I strongly recommend to upgrade now since you have to do it sooner or later anyway. :)

Thank you so much once again for your support. I truly appreciate it and can honestly say that myself and a few friends at work do try to pass on the good will shown by you and all of your colleagues there at “Spybot - Safer Networking Forums”. Our role where we work allows for this. If you think IE7 is safer and smarter than IE6, I will definitely install it. My wife will understand. :laugh:

Thanks for the last look at the HJT log. I will not bother you any more unless I have problems installing IE7. :red:

Even then, I will Google around first, to try and self diagnose before I bother you or your colleagues. :)
