Not sure what is wrong.

I know that something is not right with my laptop because it has been running slowly lately and sometimes when I google a spyware related term, e.g. 'Antispyware' and I click on a link I am forwarded to various pages selling spyware removers (not the actual link page).

I have tried various methods of removing it including:
BitDefender online scanner
Trend Micro online scanner (crashed, so could not do a full system scan)
McAfee Virus Scan
iOLO System Mechanic 6
Spybot
Ad-Ware Personal Edition
Windows Defender

I have tried Spybot on several occasions. Sometimes it scans for a bit then comes up with 'User aborted scan' which I didn't! Other times it scans, but really slowly (ie. taking about four hours) and then when its done doesnt come up with anything and interestingly also shows a scan time significantly less that the time it was scanning for. Today I scanned it and it took 3hrs 10mins but it reported it as taking 55mins.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

1) Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt
(save the logs until the end)

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)


2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) it is a trial version of the program.
Install ewido security suite
Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this free one with these instructions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Restart the computer and post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, the ewido scan report and a new HJT log. Let me know how you are running now, and I'll see if we have more to do?

Thanks for the quick response. I have run down the instructions and have done everything. I think my laptop is now free because Spybot scans at its normal speed again. Here are the various logs, first is the firwareout log, then the ewido log and finally the hijack log (which was done at the end of the process).

Hi Craig, looking over the logs now, I notice in the ewido scan, and I am not familiar with System Mechanic, these lines:

It looks like SM is storing some nasty cookies. ewido seems to have deleted them, but I would check to make sure, and I would also add a cleanout of that area to routine maintenance. Probably one of the folders I have highlited in red. Besides that, ewido did the job with nothing missed and no surprises it could not clean.

Don't know if you missed them or not, sometimes other programs block changes, may be the System Mechanic? I find the easiest way at that point is to start in safe mode and delete them there. These lines are just clutter.

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

I can't say how much I want to thank you pskelley! I was so annoyed with the sudden slowdown that I was going to reinstall windows!

I removed the two lines again, and then ran SM and it replaced them. I think I'll just leave them for the time being an email SM support and see what they say about it. I also removed all the SM spyware undos so that all of the copies which it kept of the spyware are now gone.
