Systems:
Norton Ghost no longer does backup on my external USB drive.
Earthlink Tool bar stopped working.

McAfee found Virtumonde and quarantined it. But the quarantine dissappared. Not sure if it got out of quarantine.

Spybot S&D reports Virtumonde and a Microsoft security change in the Registry.

First time user of this (and any forum).

Hope you can help! Thank you.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

I see Vundo leftovers but nothing active, that is not unusual, the infection is usually hidden. Let's see if combofix can find it.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Thank you for replying! I noticed something about "F:\Autorun.inf" being deleted? "F:" is my external USB hard drive - used only by Norton Ghost Backup software. Doesn't Ghost need this file? I can worry about this later. Just wanted you to know. By the way, I only use the external drive for backup and have never recovered anything from it - yet. (Ghost does a complete image backup of "C:" drive.)

Here's the requested logs:

Thanks for retuning your infomation, I have never run Norton Ghost (or Norton/Symantec for that matter) so can tell you nothing about it.

F:\Autorun.inf <<< combofix finds this file to be infected, if you believe it is not, scan it to find out using: http://virusscan.jotti.org/
That file is here: C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\ If you find it is not infected, return it to the originial position.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Autorun.inf&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=

1) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files and delete them if there.

How is the computer running?

Thanks

Thanks for replying.

Ok, I had some problems booting this morning.
Got a blue screen (produced by XP) saying Volume (C:) was 'dirty'.
It proceeded to correct everything, and it looks like it may have undone some of fixes that were made yesterday. Indeed, the quarantined file AUTORUN.INF was not in the quarantine folder. I found it back in the F: drive (my external hard drive). I had it scanned at the place where you said. Two scanners thought it was a problem.

Anyway I thought I'd better run Combofix and HJT again becasue of what happened this morning. I did, however, remove Viewpoint Manager as you suggested. I think this came from AOL's AIM by daughter downloaded (always blame it on the kids!).

So I have yet to ask HJT to fix anything, and I have not run ATF yet.

Sorry for setback, but I wanted to be that we're still on the same page before proceeding (considering what happened this morning).

Kind of afraid to turn my computer off until all this gets fixed.

Here are the logs:

I have this gut feeling that you have either hardware or software issues that I am not going to be able to help you resolve.

Got a blue screen (produced by XP) saying Volume (C was 'dirty'.
I must have error messages "word for word" exactly as Windows presents them to you, this is the only way they can be researched.

I would like to collect some information.

1) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

2) Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here along with that Uninstall List and any error message you are receiving "word for word".

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, let's do this:

1) Things did not proceed like I wanted them to and I want to be sure we missed nothing. Look back at the instructions and make sure they were all completed. If anything was not, let me know.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(just leftover junk, not malware)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

4) Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

5) Update MBAM and scan to make sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.

6) You may also scan with KOS to be sure if you wish.

7) Update McAfee and scan the system, both to make sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have any problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close your topic.

Things we missed #4: Ran ATF Cleaner - Done.

Fixed Search Hooks with HJT.
Deleted ComboFix.
Cleaned System Restore Files.
Ran MBAM - no detections.
Updated and ran McAfee - no detections.

FYI: North Ghost still not working right, but now I can work on this without thinking "virus" all the time!

FYI: Computer boots ok and internet seems a little faster!!

Questions:
What do I do with HJT?
What do I do with ATF Cleaner?
What's the difference between MBAM and Spybot SD?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for taking the time to give me some feedback and your questions.

Norton Ghost <<< can not help with that program and I suggest (do you pay for it?) you contact tech support for instructions.
http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support/index.jsp
They will probably have you reinstall the program, but I prefer to let them make that call since I know nothing about NG.

Computer boots ok <<< information that should help performance impprove if applied.
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html
http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html

HJT <<< I have had HJT on all of my computers for about ten years, the tool does much more than we have used it for, a tutorial:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html
(uses no resources unless you run it and only a little disk space) <<< this applies to all four programs you mention.

ATF Cleaner <<< your to keep or delete, I will say this...you will not find a better small cleaner anywhere.

MBAM <<< this one is being blocked by hackers (who can read everything we say) the malware fighters who created it point it towards rouge junk so the data base is smaller that that of Spybot S&D which looks for a vast variety of malware/adware/spyware.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/index.html

Hope that helps...Phil
