View Full Version : virtumonde just won't go away

Hi,

I have repeatedly run spybot on this computer in safe mode. Virtumonde keeps showing up, I keep removing it, and it just isn't getting removed. (I'm having almost exactly the same symptoms as poster Tim Robbins). In addition, I keep getting a "do you want to run debugger" error message. Sorry I can't be more specific - the message has come up about 50 times tonight but now that I want it to come up I can't get it to...

Anyway, here is my HJT log. Please advise.

Thank you so much for your help!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

Did you try searching for that error message?
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=A+runtime+error+has+occurred.+Do+you+wish+to+debug%3F+Line%3A1+Error%3A+Syntax+Error%22&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=
No doubt poorly written malware is causing the error and hopefully when it is remove the error will stop.

My first question has to be, with Service Pack #3 in release, why are you still running SP#1? As far as I know, you can not even download Windows Critical Updates and will continue to constantly get infected. See this information: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=425

As stated, you do not want to update while infected, but as soon as you are clean you must visit Windows Updates and download/install all critical updates for your system. If you go straight to SP#3, here is Microsoft Support in the event you need it.
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (All Languages)
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131

Why are you still running AVG 7 when AVG 8 free has been released for months.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

First, thank you so much for your help. I agree about the woeful state of the software on this computer. I am helping out a friend so I have no control over the versions that were running before this problem happened. When we get rid of the virus you can be sure I will update everything that can be updated.

Best Wishes,

LSF123

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Please read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

This information will help with getting AVG up to date, you may wait until the computer is clean to do this.
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
This tutorial will help if you can use it.
How to Install Free version AVG 8.0 without LinkScanner feature
http://russelltexas.com/tutorials/avg8install.htm

I see other programs that are out of date and dangerous, and junk like this:
AntispywareBot: http://www.castlecops.com/s15060-AntiSpywareBot.html
I'll look at a uninstall list soon and make suggestions.

1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\ <<< appears Java is out of date:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wrogcaad.ini

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-

Folder::
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\AntispywareBot

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: ctgwcz.dll xghbdn.dll <<< may be gone

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.

How is the computer running now?

Thanks...Phil

Phil,

Thank you for your thorough instructions. The only thing I was confused about was in Step 5 "*Cleaning Prefetch ". I couldn't tell if that was another step I was supposed to take, or just more information about what the ATF Cleaner had done automatically.

The computer seems to be running faster and I'm not gettting the errors that I was getting before. Please tell me when I can start updating the service pack and all the outdated software. You are the best!

Laura

Here are the log files from CFScript, MBAM, and HJT.

Hi Laura, thanks for returning your information and the feedback. The Prefetch disclaimer is just for your information, many folks don't even know it exists. Hackers do hide their junk there and cleaning it removes the bad stuff but also removes stuff that Windows uses to speed up your computer. Some folks are surprised when the computer is running better, then I ask them to clean and it slows a little. So...I added that disclaimer so they know about Prefetch for their own benefit and why it has happened.

Please tell me when I can start updating the service pack and all the outdated software.
DO NOT update Windows Criticals until we know you are clean, since you will be making the leap to SP#3, Microsoft offers free help if needed:
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (All Languages)
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Stick with me a bit longer, most of what MBAM found is in combofix quarantine and in infected System Restore files that must be dealt with, but this important step is first.

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Thanks...Phil

Phil,

I installed the Recovery Console but clicked Yes instead of No to scan for malware. Did I screw it up?

Also, I have searched the entire hard drive and can't find C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Here is the ComboFix log.

I hope I didn't mess it up. Please let me know what to do next.

Laura

Morning Laura, Recovery Console is install correctly, here is a little information for you.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.

Before we remove combofix, could I have a look at your uninstall list:

Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

Thanks...Phil

Phil,

I hope you had a good weekend. Ours was good. Back to the fixes...

Here's the latest HJT log. You said I could edit things out but I left it alone just in case.

Thanks!

Laura

Thanks for the uninstall list. I see no malware in this HJT log:
Scan saved at 9:53:06 PM, on 10/13/2008

Uninstall list:

Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html

Adobe Reader 7.1.0 <<< out of date and being exploited
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/

AVG Free Edition <<< update

LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate 1.80 (Symantec Corporation
Since you are running Grisolft's AVG, I would uninstall Symantec.

Viewpoint Media Player <<< if you do not use this, I suggest you uninstall it.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.

Update AVG and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. Since AVG 8 Free offers no tech support, here is valuable information: FAQ
