computer in a mess after SP1 download .help!

Hi I now have vista windows. whith little problems to start with. But after downloading service pack 1 from microsoft 2 weeks ago i have had alsorts of probs. The main one being web page text is very small. I have to enlgare by ctrl and far right + but this makes the page to wide.
My icons on the desk top are the same.:mad:

I had mcafee on here when i got it. i have now got rid of it and installed avg free again.
I have with help uninstalled the service pack but to no avail.
I have run spybot search and detroy on here. it picks up a lot of tracking cookies but no actual virus.
I have run super antispy on here. no virus detected.

I have contacted microsoft they phoned me back and we went through a few things, but nothing has been put right as yet.

I am now getting connection problems although it says i am connected to the internet.

I have had errror 404 and 404+ at times.

the other niggling problem is i have 16 Dll with little cogs in the box on the desk top.

Any help would be most welcome.
I am computer literate but not an expert.
