Had to trick evil trojan by renaming HJT, but here's the current log. I've run spybot, trend spysweeper (scan only) and CCleaner. I changed a bunch of registry stuff with CCleaner, but I have the backed up files in case I really messed up...let me know. Here's the log:

Hello winoceros

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

I need to see the entire HJT log, make sure its the latest version by Trendmicro, if not drag it to the trash and download and install the newer version, also follow the instructions to post the log correctly

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe) to your desktop.

Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.

DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Here is today's log. I did have the most recent version of HJT downloaded, but didn't paste it in properly. Thank you! Computer's monitor is also flashing on and off, whole thing seems really unstable.

Hi,

Your infected with the Vundo Trojan, do this in order please.

Disable Spysweeper as it may prevent the fixes from working

Disable SpySweeper:
You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options>Uncheck "load at windows startup"
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck" home page shield".
Uncheck ''automatically restore default without notification".
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpySweeper again.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Double-click [b]VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

These instructions:
Uncheck" home page shield".
Uncheck ''automatically restore default without notification".

I cannot find these on the available tabs. The pages and fonts are overlaying and doubling visually. I unchecked all the boxes, but which tab are these two on?

winoceros

I have downloaded the free spysweeper, if that matters. Maybe those two options are not available?

I have run VundoFix twice, and in neither case did it find any files. It showed zero files found each time.

I also have a "purityscan" that seems to keep showing up. Will this automatically have taken care of that too?

Hello,

From the Malwarebytes instructions

Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

After every scan you run, I always need to see a new HJT log, its our Bible, it shows me what progress if any that we are making ..

Post the new HJT log <-----

Then run these, Combofix will clean Purity

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
Click on this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.

IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

The rest of your log looks fine , how are things running now ??

Pretty good. I don't get any auto launched weird sites any more. I reinstalled SpySweeper. Should I keep or pitch any of the fixers I've downloaded to date? I'm so happy right now and my mom will be thrilled. I'm not Jewish, but you do us all a mitzvah. Thank you so much! :wav:

That's great , glad things are well. :bigthumb: Part of our service is to keep you aware of how you got infected, I would like you to read this about P2P File Sharing Programs as a heads up to stay away from them as this appears to be the latest avenue of attack by Malware ( scumbag ) writers. And these people are, there only interest in life is to steal anything they can from you, God forbid they should go out and get a real job and with there knowledge help people better there lives.

P2P (File Sharing ) programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/...ID-theft_1.html (http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html)

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

ATF Cleaner <-- Yours to keep, run it now and then to clean out the clutter.

Malwarebytes <-- Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

Hijackthis <---Your call, hopefully you won't need it again, if you do you can redownload it

Combofix <---Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn

Ken, I'm back. It was running fine and then I returned it to Mom, who promptly opened her outlook and everything wrent awry. Striping on the monitor, frozen black screens, cursor that disappears, processes that halt and return. When booting, often, but not always goes to check disk, lines fill the screen. Mom wrote the message (partial)
vol ser # section 6CC5-1CE7. I have a current HJT log to post, and also to remind you that before posting here the first time, I had run a CCleaner and saved the registry entries, which I have on a thumb drive, but don't know how to post that, in case it's relevant.

winoceros,

Sorry your still having issues , just checked your HJT log and it looks fine, no malware or a virus that I can see. If your system still wants to run chdisk on every start up it could be sign of either your hard drive failing or your Operating system is corrupt.

Why don't you post in one of these forums for windows issues as we just do Malware Removal on this one.

Thanks for the advice, I'm running it now. Do you think the CCleaner could have been a contributing factor or would that kind of thing show up on my HJT log?

CCleaner, it all depends what you ran, if you ran just the cleaner that deleted temp files and cookies and such you should be ok, its a very safe program to use, BUT if you ran the Issues Scan ( the newer version shows a registry cleaner ) and removed items that you where unsure of, it could have caused you some problems. If you did run the registry cleaner, go to where you saved it, right click on it and when it asks you if you want to restore or merge with the registry, say yes.
