I went through all the steps in the post at http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=3261. Thanks for that help.

I still have an issue where I can't change my home page. I can go through Internet Options and change/apply but it doesn't stick.

Per the instructions, here are the logs I saved (the SPYBOT log is too large to post or attach apparently).

Dawgdazed, Welcome to the forum

Lets use an altrenative method/Fix
You already have ewido so skip that

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
______________________________
Please download the trial version of Ewido anti-malware 3.5 from here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Install Ewido anti-malware.
When installing, under Additional Options uncheck Install background guard and Install scan via context menu.
When you run Ewido for the first time, you could get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click Ok.
The program will prompt you to update. Click the Ok button.
The program will now go to the main screen.
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.

On the left-hand side of the main screen click the Update Button.
Click on Start.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once finished updating, close Ewido.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/). Make sure to close Ewido before installing the update.
______________________________
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Next step:

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

So this happened the other day too and I'm now realizing I didn't run some of those other fixes in safe mode like I was probably supposed to and maybe that played a role in not completely fixing the problem. Anyway, I can't logon in safe mode. It doesn't offer the opportunity to select the domain or computer and whenever I try to logon I get an error message saying check your password. But I logon in regular mode w/no problems - there's no caps lock or numbers lock problem. I'm definitely entering the right password.

There is one other thing that may be relevant. i have a dual boot startup on my machine. I have to select which boot before i have the chance to F8 into the DOS boot selection. And I'm selecting the same boot I normally do. Thanks again for all your help.

After choosing safe mode do you see your accounts and administrators ?

Try Msconfig
Reboot into safe mode
Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
click the boot.ini tab > Tick [X]/Safeboot, apply > OK and restart windows.
then choose safe.

To restart back to normal >
Restart back to normal By unchecking [ ]/safeboot in msconfig
hit apply then OK and let windows restart
When windows has restarted place a check in the
[X] dont show this message or launch the system configurations utlity when windows starts.

The link to the thread is below. I screwed up. What I was saying is I can NOT log-in to safe mode. For whatever reason I get an error message saying check user name/password, but I'm entering them correctly. So I tried what you said and that put my machine in safe mode and now I can't log in to that boot at all. Please help. This is a big problem now. Sorry.

Have you tried leaving the administrator password blank ?

Windows XP Pro:
At the log-in screen, press Ctrl/Alt/Del twice quickly
Type "Administrator" and leave password blank.

Windows XP Home:
Reboot, tapping F8 each second.
Select Safe Mode at the menu.
Select Administrator, leave password blank.

This doesn't work for me either. I tried last night, but to no avail. It doesn't offer the dropdown in safe mode where I can select what to logon on to (like domain, or the computer). So I tried typing my domain\user name, just user name, administrator, but none of them work.

Hi,

Lonny asked me to look in. Which file system do you have, NTFS or FAT32?

Do you have a regular install CD? We can go to recovery console and replace your current boot.ini with the copy Windows creates in another folder if we can access Recovery Console.

It would be in the C:\windows\pss folder and should be named:

boot.ini.backup

If I can't log in is there another way I check the file type and get to the C: to access that boot file? It's a corporate machine so I don't have a boot disk.

Without a floppy or install CD I am not able to do much. What other system is installed there? You have one windows XP. What else is installed?

I want to clarify something.

When you try to start, does the Safe Mode Screen come up and ask for a password? If so, can you press CTRL + ALT +DEL twice to get an old fashioned logon screen? If so, can you enter your identoty's name and get into Safe mode?

I do get the Safe Mode screen, but doing ctrl+alt+del twice doesn't do anything. It just stays in the safe mode login w/just user name and password - no place for domain name. The only thing I'm thinking is potentially getting the administrator password.

I do have an XP CD, but it's not the one for this computer.

Any XP CD is bootable and will load Recovery console. The only possible problem I see is that if there is a password on the Administrators account, then you won't be able to access Recovery console.

Let's take it for a test run to see if you can access the RC.

Insert the Setup compact disc (CD) and restart the computer. If prompted, select any options required to boot from the CD.
When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose the repair or recover option by pressing R. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console.

You will be asked for a password. Press enter if you didn't set up an Administrator Password when you installed. That will get you in. If that doesn't work and a password is required, then you won't be able to access Recovery Console.

To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit.

Let me know if this works and gets you access.

Also, does this system have a floppy drive?

If you can get the Administrator password legitimately, then do that and just go to safe mode. Then undo the boot.ini change you made to put you into this loop.

If a pass is required to enter Safe Mode, then you are not going to be able to access Recovery Console either. Go ahead and try but I think this is the situation.

I was able to get in, but it did require a password. I'll have to keep working to get the administrator password I guess. Thanks.

You wer able to try to start Recovery console you mean? To get in that would mean that you were taken to a prompt.

I am understanding your response to mean that you need the password to really get in.

And that just pressing enter didnt take you any further.

Correct - I was able to get into the recovery prompts and it required a password to which entering didn't work. I haven't been able to get the password yet, but hope to tomorrow.
