View Full Version : virtumonde.psx problem
Spybot recently picked up "virtumonde.prx" on my system, and despite several attempts at deleting it, the virus always seems to come back after I restart/rescan. In other words, help!
Here's the HijackThisLog, thanks!:

Hi
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode
On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
Please continue as follows:
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:
C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
Ran Combofix, here's the log (worth noting that it deleted 2 System32(?) files, hopefully those were the problem files):

Also, when I re-enabled Spybot tea-timer I kept getting "change" messages. I clicked "no" for the browser and McAfee changes; when it started getting into the registry changes I disabled and re-enabled tea-timer and the messages stopped. Hopefully this wasn't an  move. Thanks again.
Hi
Please keep Tea Timer disabled until I give you all clean speech.
You installed wrong version of recovery console. Please remove it using instructions below. Post back when done.
Open My Computer.
Double-click the hard drive on which you installed the Recovery Console.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Click Show hidden files and folders, clear the Hide protected operating system files check box, and then click OK.
At the root directory, delete the \Cmdcons folder.
At the root directory, delete the file Cmldr.
At the root directory, right-click the Boot.ini file and then click Properties.
Clear the Read-only check box, and then click OK.
Open Boot.ini in Notepad, and remove the entry for the Recovery Console. It will look similar to this:
C:\cmdcons\bootsect.dat="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
Save the file and close it.
Modifying the Boot.ini file incorrectly may prevent your computer from restarting. Be sure to delete only the entry for the Recovery Console. Notes:
To open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
It is recommended that you change the attribute for the Boot.ini file back to read-only after you complete this procedure. You may also want to hide your system files again.
Turned off the Tea Timer and clicked the appropriate boxes, tried to delete the Cmdcons folder and kept getting the "Error Deleting File or Folder" box with the message "Cannot Delete 1394BUS.SY_:Access is denied" "Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is currently in use."
Also, whenever I try to log on Windows (XP), I get a "LogOnHook.exe-Common Language Runtime Debugging Services" box with the message "Application has generated an exception that could not be handled: Process id=0x11f0(4592), Thread id=0x122c(4652)." "Click OK to terminate the application, Click CANCEL to debug the program".
Hi
Let's see if this gets rid of the folder.
Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe).
Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
C:\cmdcons
Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the
Paste Standard List of Files/Folders to Move
window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
Click the red Moveit! button.
Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
Close OTMoveIt2
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
Did the above, rebooted, and this is what was in the log:
Folder move failed. C:\cmdcons\SYSTEM32 scheduled to be moved on reboot.
Folder move failed. C:\cmdcons scheduled to be moved on reboot.

Hi
Please run correct recovery console installation file with ComboFix. Post back its report & a fresh hjt log.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.
Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.
Uninstall old Java versions and get Java 6 Update 7 here (http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=23111).

Did you uninstall all old Java versions thru add/remove programs? It's necessary to do so since presence of vulnerable Java version is enough to make your system vulnerable.
Post a fresh hjt log. How's the system running?
I deleted the files (and emptied them from the recycle bin) and rebooted. The HJT log's below (I did remove the older Java, but when I added Java 6 Update 7 and attempted to run the Kaspersky scan it kept telling me that I needed Java 1.5 or higher to run the scan. I clicked on the link they provdied and added Java 6 Update 10 as well and was able to proceed with the Kaspersky scan, though now I have both Updates on my system).
One thing: even after everything, when I log on I still get a "LogOnHook.exe - Common Language Runtime Dubugging Services" error box that says "Application has generated an exception that could not be handles: Process id=0xfb0 (4016), Thread id=0xfb4 (4020). Click OK to terminate the application. Click CANCEL to debug the application".
Here's the HJT log. Thanks:

Hi
You may uninstall Update 7 then. For that logonhook.exe issue please see here (http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=210719). Seems to be McAfee related issue. Hope that helps :)
Just 2 final questions:
1) is it safe to reactivate the Spybot Tea-timer and (more importantly)
2) when I re-activate it, if it says changes have been made to the registry or elsewhere should I go ahead and approve the changes?
And I'll search around the McAfee board for the logonhook.exe issue (I clicked on the "connection issue" link that was provided there but it's 404, so I'll see if I can find it elsewhere on the board).
Thanks for all your help!
Hi
Before considering TeaTimer re-enabling its memory must be "resetted" first.
Reset Teatimer
* Right-click >here (http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat)< and select "Save as" and save it without changing the name to your desktop
* Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
* Open Spybot S&D
o Click Mode > check Advanced Mode
o Go to the left Panel and click Tools then, also in left panel, click Resident (OK any firewall prompts)
o Check the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts
o Use File > Exit to terminate Spybot
* Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect
* You can now delete ResetTeaTimer.bat
when I re-activate it, if it says changes have been made to the registry or elsewhere should I go ahead and approve the changes?
A bit tricky question. That depends on the change. To approve is not correct option in every case.
Since your system seems to be clean I'll give you all clean speech.
Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.
THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT
Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis
Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
Next we remove all used tools.
Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)
hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.
Have a great day,
Blade
I've done the above up to and including the OTMoveIt32 removal. However, when I re-enabled TeaTimer I got the expected "changes" alerts (about 7 or 8 of them) I gave them the approval; however, I accidentally approved a change in which a McAfee file was to be replaced with a file with the same name, but in quotes. Doh! Now I'm just wondering if I made changes that I shouldn't have. (I'm also now getting the "RUNDLL" box at start-up again that says "Error loading C:\\WINDOWS\system32\ijyecvcc.dll" "The specified module could not be found" message. I was getting this message before, but it had stopped appearing while I was doing the above steps).
Before downloading the Microsoft Updates, I ran the HJT for one last (?) time and just wanted to make sure everything was okay first (or if I have to do a "restore" on Spybot to undo the approved changed). Thanks:

Hi
As said TeaTimer may not be so easy to use.
Disable TeaTimer and fix following entries with hjt:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BMbf735159] Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ijyecvcc.dll",s
O20 - Winlogon Notify: __c00B4F36 - C:\WINDOWS\
Reboot and see if those entries are gone for good.
The box didn't pop up when I rebooted a good sign.
Before I re-enable TeaTimer, here's the latest HJT log. Please let me know if everything's good to go. Thanks:
