Hey guys,
It's been almost 2 years since I've had to use your software! I forgot I had it in my system. Downloaded the new version and it removed AV2009. However, there is still a start up command in the System Configuration Utility that I have disabled. Is there anyway to remove it? And I still have the yellow shield on my toolbar. Thanks again! $$$$ on the way.
Hello Smithbro
Welcome to Safer Networking.
Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.
Download Trendmicros Hijackthis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe) to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hello Smithbro,
Do this first...Important
Disable the TeaTimer, leave it disabled until we're done or it will prevent fixes from taking
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, Click on Tools
Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer.<--You need to do this for it to take effect
This tool needs to be run from Safemode to be effective so download it to your desktop then boot to Safemode to run it
To Enter Safemode
Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html)
Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hey Ken,
I am still playing around (not removing anything) and looking in the System Configuration Utility and noticed the location of the av2009 under the Startup button. Went to the location in the regedit window and noticed this in the: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Class Name: <NO CLASS>
Last Write Time: 10/12/2008 - 9:41 PM
Value 0
Name: stratas
Type: REG_SZ
Data: lockx.exe
Is this OK?
Good Morning,
No that's not good, but we're not done yet and you need to read the instructions please
From the SDFix Instructions
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log <--This is our bible, it shows me what was removed and what was not, after every scan and program we run I always without asking need to see a new Hijackthis log
Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.
This may be gone, it was part of the SDbot worm
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [stratas] lockx.exe
Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) or Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe)
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<-- Don't forget this
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

Log looks fine :bigthumb:
Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.jpg
Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future
How are things running now ???

Seems like everything is running smooth. IE is back to normal, though I don't use it anymore. Still have that doggone yellow update shield in the Taskbar. Any suggestions?
yellow update shield in the Taskbar <---Is this related to Windows Update??
Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Hey Ken,
Just thought I would follow up and say hey and thanks again. Went to your public profile and smiled and laughed. I don't know why I assumed that you were the stereotype computer geek that has to be under the age of 30. It's great to see someone in our age group out there and enjoying what he is doing and making a difference in computer challenged users like me. Keep it going man, my memory fails me every day!

Hello,
Yep no kid anymore :red: Been around computing since win 3.1, things have changed alot. I started doing this a few years back, most of the people that we help in the forums and the ones also that I help in real life are just innocent bystanders getting whacked with this stuff, it gives us all great pleasure knowing that we helped someone. Its like my way of paying back. We help people from all over the world, you can't believe the offers that I have received from people that I have helped in the way of thank yous, invitations to there homes for a visit, a beer in a tavern in Rome, dinner someplace in Spain and the list goes on and on and on. :)
Your logs look fine, I asked you about the yellow shield in your taskbar, is it related to Windows Updates??

Hmmmm,
Good question. To be honest with you I couldn't say. I would assume so but I swear that when I clicked on it for the "updates are ready for your computer", that's when I had av2009 whack me. I thought the Windows Updates were automatic. Do you think it's safe for me to access? I'll try it again, but we might have to put our seat belts on.....
Right click on that icon and see what it sez
Another option is to go to your Control Panel and open the Security Center and under windows updates, select disable, basically turn it off , reboot and see if that icon is still there

It did say One Windows update detected. Went to the control panel, disabled it and the shield did turn red with an x. So that does confirm the Windows updater. Reactivated it and it is gone. I'll be more aware of if next time.
Thanks again! And if your ever up in the Western North Carolina Mountains, give me a call and we'll have that beer!
Rick
That's great Rick :bigthumb:
SDfix <--- Drag it to the trash
ATF Cleaner <-- Yours to keep, run it now and then to clean out the clutter.
Malwarebytes <-- Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.
Hijackthis <---Your call, hopefully you won't need it again, if you do you can redownload it

Dslreports (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10002)
Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.
Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
Safe Surfn
