i think i was infected with virtumonde. i read through one of the previous users who was too and followed the directions you gave him. i have my combofix log. so far it combofixhas remedied the problem, but i read on combofix's site that there can still be traces left. i was hoping i could get someone to look over the log. also, let me know if i should post my hjt log. thanks!

Do NOT run 'fixes' before helpers have analyzed HJT log (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=16806) (ran ComboFix though it shouldn't be used without supervision)

Download and install TrendMicro HijackThis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe)
* Once installed open HijackThis by clicking Start > Programs > HijackThis and click the button labeled
Do a system scan only

* Click the scan button in the lower left hand corner of the interface and HijackThis will quickly scan your system.
* Once the scan is complete the scan button will now read save log. Click this button to save the log file to your PC. Once you select where you would like to save the file it will open in your systems default text editor. Typically this application is Notepad. Post the log here.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Uninstall old Adobe Reader and get the latest one here (http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm).

(i'm not sure if it means "Qoobox" has some items in quarantine, but i've never used a scanner named qoobox.)
Hi

That's ComboFix quarantine folder. We'll remove it a bit later :)

if you want/need to see the error-scan log too, i kept that.
No need for that :)

How's your system running now?

the symptoms are gone. i ran spybot after the first combofix run (my unsupervised one) and it was still finding smitfraud-c but not virtumonde. i haven't ran it since you been helping me. but no more pop-ups or anything like that. the only thing now is my clock never went back to normal and my avast tray icon is still gone since i've ran combofix. i hope i didn't do anything to ruin it when i ran combofix myself. should i try the spybot scan?

Hi

Clock should be back in right format after ComboFix is uninstalled. We'll do that a bit later.

should i try the spybot scan?
Yes, please. Let me know the results. :)

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
See here (http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/#firewalls) to choose one if you don't have a 3rd party firewall.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

thanks so much for all your help!

i did everything you listed except install Spyware Blaster. i just wanted to know if i should, because it sounds like it's essentially the same thing as SpyBot. i thought they might conflict with each other. do you reccomend Blaster over Bot? or is it ok to have them both installed?

also, i uninstalled combofix and i still don't have my avast icon and the time hasn't changed back yet. i do remember that when i ran combofix the first time, spybot was noting changes to the registry and i was allowing them for the sake of combofix. do you think i might have just allowed it to permanantly change those startup settings?

thanks again!

also, i've been using window's firewall. i assumed that was good enough. do you reccomend the 3rd party one's instead of window's. or is it good to have more than one? which would you say is best? thanks again!

It's ok having both :)

Have you rebooted? If icon doesn't come back after reboot then it's recommended to reinstall Avast.

Windows own firewall doesn't monitor traffic both ways. It's recommended to get 3rd party one and disable Windows own. For firewall I recommend either Online Armor Free (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html) or Comodo Firewall Pro (http://download.comodo.com/cfp/download/setups/CFP_Setup_3.0.25.378_XP_Vista_x32.exe) (don't install SurfSafe toolbar if you choose Comodo).

is it normal for the clock to not be restored too? or does that mean something didn't go right?

or does that mean something didn't go right?

Hi

Did c:\QooBox folder and ComboFix.exe file disappear from your desktop? If yes then uninstallation should be successful. What time format clock should be? Instructions for how to change datetime format manually can be found here (http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-change-displayed-datetime-format-in-windows-xp-and-vista/).
