View Full Version : Virtumonde, Win32.Qhost.abh, Vundo trojan issues
AgentBlue
2008-10-16, 14:58
Hello,
I started experiencing popups and redirected Google search links. Cleaned over 80 things already (SpyBot and another app). However, I can't fully remove the persistent Virtumonde and Win32.Qhost.abh -- keep getting reinstalled after reboot, which I know is their nature. :-P
Also, just today, my antivirus has been picking up/removing "Vundo trojan entries," as well as "Packed.Generic.180" (dll files being created in system32 folder).
I've done scanning in Safe Mode, etc. and read other research online and in the forums here. At this point, I'm going to ask for guidance.
Below is my HijackThis log.
THANKS a bunch for any assistance,
Blue

If you would prefer to reformat just let me know, I will surely understand.
Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
Thanks

Hi pskelley,
The computer seems a bit sluggish booting into Window (normal mode) and using it once it's booted, like something might be sucking some memory still.
Windows update (which has been locked since this issue started) did kick on and auto-update itself, though... which I think is a good thing, right? I guess it means the malware issue is at least lessening.
Another log below for you.
Thanks!

Thanks for returning the HJT log and the feedback, please remove (delete) SDFix, we are finished with that tool. The HJT log is showing nothing, combofix will look for hidden Virtumonde.
1) TeaTimer is not running, do not enable TeaTimer while we are working together.
2) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.
It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.
Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.
Thanks
AgentBlue

Good morning,
Thanks again for your assistance.
I ran ComboFix and HijackThis. The respective logs are below. (Note: I haven't restarted since initial boot and running of ComboFix and HijackThis. If I should before HijackThis let me know.)
Some of the initial sluggishness the other day could (fingers crossed) be attributed to the Windows update process, I'm thinking. But looks like ComboFix did remove a few things...

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. The HJT log looks clean but hackers have learned to hide their junk from it, remember that they are looking at what we have to say. (from under their rock) I still see a bit to remove in the combofix log, and want to do some cleaning, let's proceed like this.
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rhgrqjml.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dadkaeei.ini

C:\SDFix
Save this as CFScript
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)
3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript and the log from MBAM.
How is the computer running now?
Thanks...Phil

Hello, :greeting:
Running much more normal. Starts more normal and a quicker "usable" time from cold boot.
I did everything you requested: CFScript, ATF, Malwarebyte's A.M., and another HJT. Logs are below. MBAM removed 2 registry entries.
Just a note for you, so as to help future users. I had closed the MBAM log initially; I went into the Start menu as you mentioned to access the log folder, but with my installation it's not listed there. I found it easy to get back to the log by opening MBAM and clicking the "Logs" tab. (The log files are actually stored deep within user Application Data.)
Have a good day!

Remove combofix from the computer like this.
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Let's clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update Symantec and scan the system, both to make sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have any problems with the program, ask tech support for instructions.

Hello,
Thanks for all of your help. Thanks for the links. I always like to read tips on software and preventative measures.
- I removed ComboFix.
- I cleaned/re-enabled System Restore.
- Symantec scanned clean.
- I also disabled some startup programs. (Somewhere along the way while cleaning computer, they were all checked again, even the ones I previously disabled.)
* Note for Symantec users: by default, there's an automatic QuickScan that runs on bootup. I disabled that for now since it lagged the system a lot. That's what was lagging it. (When I upgrade the memory at some point I will re-enable the scan.)
- I also enabled TeaTimer, installed SpywareBlaster, and upgraded to IE7 (along with the latest Firefox). It should be ok to have TeaTimer and SpywareBlaster running, right? If anything, I might notice some performance issues and can disable one. (I've heard TT can be a lag, sometimes.)
:) So, that's the good news... malware free!
:scratch:The bad news, however, is that I was creating a new account on the computer with admin rights, and made my main account limited access. I was having issues deleting some files in the recycle bin and then was able to purge them. HOWEVER, I think I hosed the files on my user account. :( When I logged back in, the desktop and icons were default and no files are in My Documents (under my main username, or the new one). I will have to see if I can recover that somehow.

Please watch for a private message...
SpywareBlaster and TeaTimer run fine together.
The bad news: Only thing I can suggest is to...
Leave files in the Recycle Bin for a few days to be sure in the future
Delete that user account and set up a new one, probably need to sign in as administrator to do that.
Hope this helps...Phil
