Hello, I appear to have been infected by something called brastk.exe. This causes a red circle with a white X in it to appear in the bottom left of the screen and pops up saying I have a spyware infection. I have Spybot and regularly update it, but this appears to have got through. I cannot run spybot at the moment, and I've tried to download HJT, and can't run it either. I have also tried to download the latest version of Panda, and that won't install. Is there anything I can do?!

Try to rename HijackThis.exe to kobayashimaru.exe and let me know if you can now run it.

Thanks for taking the time to look Shaba. I found a similar thread on the forum, and so I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-malware. This seems to have slain the beast. I can now run everything again, and I can't find brastk.exe anyware. HJT is now running, here's the log:

I don't seem to be able to install the recovery console. I've followed the steps in the guide, but when I drag the downloaded Microsoft file onto the Combofix icon, it doesn't install the Recovery Console, instead it gives me the option to run Combofix or Cancel it. I thought I'd check with you before I click run, as I have no understanding of what Combofix is or does.

In that case, you can continue without it.
Combofix should ask anyway if it can download recovery console; in that case choose yes.

Sorry for delay, I got no email notification for some reason.
Please make sure that all programs are closed when installing Java.
Click here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) to visit Java's website.
Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10. Click on Download.
Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
Click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
Double click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe to install Java.
After the Java installation has finished, please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.
Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi Shaba, no worries about the delay. I will now be causing the delay, sorry! I'm away from home for the next few days, so it'll be Friday before I can do those things. Thanks for staying on top of it though!
