Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

1) TeaTimer is not running, do not turn it on while we are working together.

2) Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, that's a good start, SDFix did a good job, we are finished with the program. Remove (delete) it from your computer. Let's see what combofix will find and remove for us.

1) TeaTimer is off, DO NOT turn it on while we are working.

2) If you have questions, stop and take the time to ask them.

3) Read and follow the directions carefully.

4) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks...Phil

Ok, given that it seems to be a program to be taken seriously, I just have a couple of questions about combofix before I proceed. I did appear to have a combofix folder on my computer, but I was never aware of having it and I certainly haven't used it recently - it may be that a more knowledgeable friend of mine used it previously to try and fix another problem.

I have removed the old files and installed a new version and have downloaded and installed the windows recovery console as per instructions.

I mention all this because as I said in the first post, after running spybot for the first time in safe mode all my documents and picutures on the C: drive seemed to disappear. Strangely, when I check the properties of the C: drive by right clicking it, the memory in use doesn't seem to be reduced as I would have expected if all these files had been deleted. Does this mean that there is a chance that my documents and photos can still be recovered and will using combofix or the windows recovery console interfere with this in any way?

Thanks for your help.

Does this mean that there is a chance that my documents and photos can still be recovered
I do not know, I can not speak to what happened prior to my first post.
Did you look in the Recycle Bin to see if any files/folders got moved there in error? Spybot S&D moves anything it removes to the "Recovery" folder. Look here: Spybot S&D interface > RECOVERY button > any items removed would be there until you manually "Purge" them. If they are not there, then Spybot S&D did not remove them.

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288 <<< if you read this information you would have seen this:

That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.
There is always risk involved in installing and removing any software. Even a fix that time has shown to be useful to thousands of users, can present problems to a few or be found to have a bug in development.
almost at the very beginning of the instructions. No matter how hard we try, stuff can always happen.

combofix: sUBs has built many, many safety features into the tool, but just like the above information, stuff can always happen. I have used the tool thousands of times with only a couple of issues, but still can make no promises.

Recovery Console: Information for you.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.

Please be sure you have read the complete tutorial, most questions will be answered there.

Thanks

Ok, thanks for your advice on the lost files. Their disappearance does not appear to be related to Spybot. I may have missread or misunderstood the information on the Microsoft website, but I gather that the Recovery Console is a tool to recover or repair operating system files rather than folders such as My Documents. Or could the Recovery Console help me with this too?

Thanks for returning your information and the questions. I would appreciate it if you would review the information in the links I provided about Recovery Console. It is not going to do what you want, here is more information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_Console

There is software that might accomplish what you want to, but it would not be cheap. You many find something to help in this information:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+recover+missing+files&btnG=Search

Let's move on with this cleanup.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Folder::
C:\SDFix
C:\Program Files\rsmbxy
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\todmrufw

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(this may be gone, removed by CFScript. Skip this step if that is the case)
O21 - SSODL: sysmon - {57DC7889-1476-D94A-C43B-0A9C129B618A} - C:\Program Files\rsmbxy\sysmon.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.

How is the computer running now?

Thanks...Phil

Thanks for the information on the missing files - looks like I'll have to look into this one. I've double checked in all the likely places for them but have had no luck and something seems to be taking up a LOT of space on the hard drive that I can't account for.

Anyway...

Computer is running great now. However, during the last MalawareBytes scan Windows Resident Shield popped up with a warning that it had discovered 3 threats in the C:/ drive in the System Volume Information folder. It named the threats as Trojan horse Generic11.BFZN (x2) and Trojan horse Generic11.BFZH. I did not act upon this warning.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Everything looks good from here, let's do this.

1) Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

2) Clean System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

3) Update AVG and "Scan whole computer"
*Near the bottom above the words "The scan is complete" choose "Export overview to file"
*Choose Desktop and give it a name you will recognize like AVG Scan Results, then choose SAVE.
*Close results and close the Interface.
*Copy and paste the contents of that file if I request it or you have something you think I should see.

If all is well, let me know and I will close the topic.

Thanks for all your help. I seem to have a computer that is working again.

I only seem to have one more problem. AVG says that the Resident Shield is inactive and is in warning state. However, when I open the component, while it still says that Resident Shield is inactive at the top of the window, 'resident shield active; is checked and it says that it has been running for over 75 mins.

I am a little puzzled by this.. any hints?

Thanks, Lorraine.

First, let me say I also run AVG Free and I like it better than the one I used to pay for. A few tips I have picked up.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grisoft <<< some information

1) I believe when updates are released, that so many of us try to get them right away, and this causes the servers to kick folks off to protect themselves. I have learned if I can not get them to wait until an off period when servers are not busy.

2) I also do not allow AVG to scan everyday, I turn that function off and scan when I want too.

3) I do however, set a scheduled time for updates, and if that fails at that time, refer to #1

4) Updates can be downloaded and installed manually

5) Here are some good faq's: http://www.avg.com/faq

6) And a good free forum for help when needed:

7) If you are interested, a trusted friend sent me this tutorial:
How to Install Free version AVG 8.0 without LinkScanner feature
http://russelltexas.com/tutorials/avg8install.htm

I have it also on both sisters computers in Maryland and I maintain it from Florida. Once or twice I have had to uninstall and reinstall over the last couple of years.

Hope that helps...Phil

Thanks. All working fine now - there was a windows xp service back waiting to be downloaded and it all seemed to sort itself out once that was finished.

Once again THANK YOU for all your help! Shame about the files, but at least I'm spyware free now. I'm onto downloading some tougher protection and maybe a better firewall.

Thanks again.

Lorraine, that's one thing I forgot to mention, the fact that downloads work much better if NOTHING else is downloading at the time, even email. I close everything when I am seeking updates.

I caution you that you should always have a backup of all of your personal files and settings, stuff does happen.

Just a few links, Google if you need more.

Read that information from experts I posted before you decide, those are some of the sharpest folks I know. Look in the last link in post 10 for freeware firewalls.
