Hello,
I have run Malware Bites and Search and Destroy several times and I have gotten rid of a Privacy desktop page, but now I can't create any desktop backgrounds and I have an occasional pop up coming.
Thanks,
Tseyigai

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Looking at the number of times you have posted, I would have to say you have been here long enough to follow the directions. Look up to the top of this forum, they are pinned (sticky) there for you. I posted "Before you Post" instruction above also. Once you have read the directions, post the required HJT log.
Thanks

Well, to be sure, I have read these rules and understand them. I was able to get rid of the problem on the desktop. I did a complete online scan and have used Search and Destroy, but now I'm using AVG and I'm in the midst of a complete scan of it.
I'll post a hijack log soon.
Thanks,
pskelley

Thanks for that feedback, since you are into the scan only part of these instructions will help:
1) Right click the icon for AVG in System Tray and choose Open AVG User Interface.
2) Click on Update now, allow AVG to download and install any new updates.
3) Click on Computer Scanner then choose "Scan whole computer", this takes a round one hour on the computer I am using now.
4) Near the bottom above the words "The scan is complete" choose "Export overview to file"
5) Choose Desktop and give it a name you will recognize like AVG Scan Results, then choose SAVE.
6) Close results and close the Interface.
7) Copy and paste the contents of that file if I request it or you have something you think I should see.
Thanks

Ok,
Here's a Hijack this log. I see a few things that need to be deleted, namely the Privacy Protection, which I deleted at least once in the Windows folder.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.
1) Avg 8 found nothing?
2) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_04\ <<< update Java, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
3) Please do not change the color of the font, the normal color is what I can see best.
4) We need to get some information first, do not allow AVG to block the tool or any part of it.
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm
Post only the C:\rapport.txt
Thanks

Looks like you ran the second park of Smitfraudfix, there is nothing in the first part about safe mode?
Fix run in safe mode

Please follow directions!
post a new HJT log.

Look,
When I ran Smitfraud it didn't prompt me for this part: # The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
So, I did do part 1, but then rebooted and the report should have been done after part 1 was done. Ok? (I'll be at school today so won't be able to do this again till late afternoon. )
Now, here's the latest hijack report:

Avg 8 found nothing?
Since I received no response from that question, I will have to assume AVG is scanning clean.
C:\Program Files\ErrorSmart\ErrorSmart.exe <<< see this:
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/malware/?Adware.Win32.ErrorSmart
ErrorSmart is a rogue security program that shows false Warning messages. It also shows misleading scan Results. It can also install through Trojan exploits.
1) Remove (delete) Smitfraudfix from the computer.
2) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_04\ <<< update Java, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
5) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall ErrorSmart
6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {647FD14A-C4F1-46F4-8FC3-0B40F54226F7} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {758F6D53-DCC7-4CCF-9080-4B6F9389F641} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ErrorSmart] C:\Program Files\ErrorSmart\ErrorSmart.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [hB8qyhfyne] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\pupdmgr.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: ezoynv.dll,avgrsstx.dll
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
7) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.
C:\Program Files\ErrorSmart <<< delete that folder and contents if there
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS~1\Owner\LOCALSETTINGS~1\Temp\ <<< delete the contents of that Temp folder (NOT THE FOLDER)
(a few old files may not delete, that is ok, delete all of the recent ones, this is a bad one pupdmgr.exe
8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
9) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
10) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)
How is the computer running now?
Thanks

I already had Malware Bites on my computer and have used it recently. Also, I had the ATF cleaner and had used it just before going to the forum here this time. At any rate, I did a Malware Bites scan earlier a few days ago and have included the report here first, if that's ok, along with one last night. Lastly, I've had to install Realtek audio drivers again, because it had somehow gotten changed or deleted through the process earlier. Thanks, yes it's running better...

It would be so helpful if you would follow the directions as I post them.
The MBAM log reports this: No action taken
The MBAM instructions say:
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
Run the scan according to my instructions and post a MBAM log showing you followed directions.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues, you should look for stuff you no longer use or do not know to uninstall.
Adobe Reader 7.0 <<< out of date and being exploited
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
Java(TM) 6 Update 4

Viewpoint Media Player <<< I would uninstall this if you do not use it
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more, here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Registry Values Infected:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\originalwallpaper (Hijack.Wallpaper) -> No action taken.

You know something? I followed your directions. I did this as to your previous instructions:
(I also got rid of the processes you mentioned in my hijack post. "They are elliminated." I followed that instruction. I deleted Adobe Reader 7.0 (I followed that instruction.) I deleted Viewpoint Media PLayer and Java 2 Runtime ( I followed those instructions. Now, I had previously posted "2" Malware bites reports. I will do yet another one when I get home from school.
Thanks,
Stephen Hanson

This is an example only. When the MBAM instructions are followed, the items in the log will look like this:
Files Infected:
C:\Windows\System32\rQHbYSlJ.dll (Trojan.Vundo) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
There is no need to post again, good luck.
Thanks
