Hi there. My PC has been having some major malware problems lately. I keep getting lots of random popups, and the PC also runs very slowly. My antivirus scans, ad-aware, and Spybot keep detecting and fixing various problems, but nothing seems to be going away, since my Spybot detects a registry change every few minutes. Also, when I press Ctrl+Alt+Del, it shows an .exe called ngpw36 running, and if I close it, it just pops back up a few seconds later. I ran a scan with hijackthis, so here is my logfile:

hi TriSt,

ok first i would download, install, update, but not run yet; (we will run it in safe mode)
ewido anti-malware:

1. Download Ewido and install
Ewido Anti-malware. It is a free trial version of the program:

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

2. Install ewido security suite
3. Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
4. The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

1. On the left hand side of the main screen click update
2. Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use Ewido manual updates

after installin/updating, time to boot into safe mode:
you reach safe mode by tapping the f8 key during a computer restart. chose the first option safe mode. ok once in safe mode run ewido anti-malware;

Click on scanner
Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

hi TriSt,

ok thought maybe ewido would help clean it up some. ok we will use hjt, then boot to safe mode to look for and delete some files. but first disable spybots tea timer and make sure files are set to show:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

Windows XP

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

we will attempt to look for some files and delete them, luckly they are all in the same dir.

using explorer find the system32 dir, at the top click on view then details. on the right pane click on name to sort the list, makes finding them easier, look for each of these one by one and delete them if found:

The infection seems to be gone. I wasn't able to find the files you told me to delete. However, I still seem to be getting more popups when surfing the web than I usually do, even with my popup blocker on.

you still got some nasties in there. ok same drill, except this time we will do it all in SAFE MODE. might want to copy/paste this to notepad and save it so you can read it in safe mode

first do this:

xp:
Set Windows to show Hidden files and folders
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

last log looks better, except for one item still left. about those missing files, it might be a error on hjt part, so unless they are malware i dont have the poster fix them.

start hjt, click on "open misc tool section"
select both these check boxes :select both "list minor sections" list empty sections" then click "generate startup list log"

save and post that log in next reply.

Well, It still has a slight tendency to run slower, but that may be from the new ZA firewall. I have noticed it bogs down when I have more windows open, even if it didn't slow down as much before the infection. Its not by much, but it is a little slower. Other than that, it all looks good. No more popups, no more spontaneous shut-downs of programs.

hi TriSt,

your good to go. iwas bothered by this entry;

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,pjqcphw.exe

the pjqcphw.exe at the end.

i think hjt gets this from the registry. i believe its just a harmless left over.
we looked for it in the system32 directory (the actual .exe itself).

ps: dont use hjt to remove the entry, the rest of that line is ok.
