Hello tm-wild

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.
It is advisable that you back up your personal data before starting any clean up procedure.

Is this your personal computer or does it belong to a company??

Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall Viewpoint, it installs without your knowledge or consent, uses system resources and basically is not needed for anything.

There may be more of this stuff hiding that we can't see.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. <-- Important
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

Click on this link HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
Disconnect from the internet. If you are on Cable or DSL, unplug your computer from the modem.
Please disable all onboard security programs (all running with back ground protection) as it may hinder the scanner from working.
This includes Antivirus, Firewall, and any Spyware scanners that run in the background.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Please be patient while the scan runs, at times it may appear to stall.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

After rebooting ensure your Security applications have been re-enabled.

Ken,
Ok everything ran ok. I went ahead and deleted that suspicious item. I wasn't sure where it was from so it seemed like a safe bet.

One other thing I noticed. I'm not sure if its a problem or not, but it seems strange.

When I re-enabled my wireless network (after doing the combo fix), I noticed this thing called Internet Connection in the Internet Gateway section of the Network Connections.

When I disable the wireless adapter, it disappears. But it reappears when I enable it. I could not disable or delete the Internet connection Gateway.

When I clicked properties and settings on it, it showed some services on it and a couple were checked for skype access. I removed all services from the list.

Strangely enough I started having problems with my wireless router when I did this. It disconnected from my cable modem. So I had to renew the IP on my router.

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

Limewire <-- I don't see it installed but you may have had it at one time. P2P File Sharing has become the latest avenue of attacks by malware writers, read this please.

P2P (File Sharing ) programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/...ID-theft_1.html (http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html)

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.jpg
Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

Not sure about the Networking issue, after we're done I will link you to some windows support sites that deal with that.

Your log looks fine but lets run a free online virus scanner to make sure we have not missed anything else

Run this free online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Standard
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.

Sorry it took so long to reply. It actually take several tries to get Kaspersky to run without some kind of issue.

BTW, this PC didn't have Limewire (I don't think) but it used to have Ares loaded on it but I removed it about 1 yr ago. It was causing my wireless router to crash because of all the attacks.

Anyway, here are the logs:

Hello,

C:\Program Files\NavExcel Try uninstalling this via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel, this program communicates with the server and brings you adds.

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)

C:\Program Files\NavExcel <--Then delete this folder if its still present

Everything else looks ok, how are things running now?

Ken,
Thanks for your help! The system is running a million times better!
Plus I can see (and hear) that the HDD is not being constantly accessed.
So I think we're in good shape.
Consider the case closed for now, hope keeping the P2P stuff away will keep more new stuff from coming in.
Thanks again!
Mark

That's great Mark :bigthumb:

Time for some cleanup and links to free programs to help keep you more secure

ATF Cleaner <-- Yours to keep, run it now and then to clean out the clutter.

Malwarebytes <-- Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

Hijackthis <---Your call, hopefully you won't need it again, if you do you can redownload it

Combofix <---Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:

Delete the following:
ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
VundoFix backups, if present
The C:\Deckard folder, if present
The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
