Firewall disabled into group mode by something

I got hit by a virus of some kind that rebooted my computer, S&D tea timer stopped it from changing stuff and the warning about an infection went away after a reboot. Everything seemed fine but I noticed my firewall was turned off because it was now in group mode. I can't fix it so I suspect what ever hit me did this and might have some effects lingering around in my computer.

Oh yeah, the windows XP pro SP2 firewall says it's being run by "group policy"... I never set it to that.

As always, I suggest you never do anything in the registry unless you have made a backup.

From my limited knowledge of TeaTimer, I know it is a powerful tool, before you attempt to make changes, you should disable TT, it will block your efforts.

This is my laptop I use on travel for the company. A company admin is put on it in case I get disabled while on travel and they have to get into my comuter to retrive data (it's a long story about a guy who had a heart attack while on travel and he had his data on his PC). Anways this is MY work computer and we can go ahead with a fix if we can...

Before I got hit with the virus attack above I could turn off and on the firewall, set exeptions ect. ect... this group thing poped up after the attack was thwarted by S&D and Symantec.

Can a virus/malware set your firewall to group so it can control it and could this be the result of residue from the attack?

Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log. <<< close until later

Since you say those lines have nothing to do with you or your ISP/company, let's clean a bit and remove them.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Note: In notepad under Format, uncheck "Word Wrap" Produce all HJT logs like this, single spaced.
single-spaced - (of type or print) not having a blank space between lines.
It is preferable, and the log easier to read, if you do not use the [code] or [php] options.

Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

Post a new HJT log with word wrap off and the uninstall list.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should. Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more, here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

I could not find that file anywhere on my computer, even with view all files and folders on.
Let's disable that service and see what happens, you can always enable it if you have to.


1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop

Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

3) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to PortController and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

I suggest you update Symantec and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have any issues with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

To be safe, let's clean system restore files:Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close this topic.
