Hi,

I have tried to use spybot and am having problems. I have used it before and like it so it seems a good choice. However, I downloaded it and tried to run the auto update but it just freezes. I thought that the manual udate would solve the problem but when I download it and run it I get error messages saying that there was an error opening the file for writing.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this??

cusack77:

By "auto update" do you mean the integrated update facility (Spybot > Update > Search for updates)? If you have a firewall have you have you authorized SpybotSD.exe to access the internet through that firewall?

By "manual updates" are you referring to the spybotsd_includes.exe file downloaded from here?

"… I get error messages saying that there was an error opening the file for writing."

What file are you getting the error on?

Yeah, I mean the integrated update and the file at the link you posted. It seems to be the library files (the *.sbs and *.sbi files).

Been through now and got the updates to install with the intgrated option and it now says that there are no new updates. I am still not able to search for problems as it says I have to download the latest updates (even tho there are none!)

See if it works after exiting Spybot and starting it again.

Tried that and tred restarting the whole computer. Checked again for updates and it says that there are no new updates. Still says that the updates need installed before a check can be carried out

Try the following:
Exit Spybot.
Delete the downloaded.ini as follows:
Using Windows Explorer navigate to:
C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Updates\downloaded.ini
Right click on downloaded.ini and select delete
Go into Spybot > Update.
Click "Search for Updates".
Check everything found
Click "Download Updates".
When the updates complete, exit Spybot.
Restart Spybot and run a scan
If the above procedure fails to work or no updates are listed for downloading, try using the manual updater. Exit Spybot. Then download and execute the manual updater program (spybotsd_includes.exe) from safer-networking.org. That will update the detection files. The file is located here:
Downloads – Home of Spybot-S&D!
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
The download item is:
Detection updates 2006-04-07 - product description
md5: FB15AD5421F77A78E22838D162B9BD8C

This updates the detection rules. Only needed if you do not want to use the update function integrated into Spybot-S&D.
