I got this computer from a friend who I am normally able to help easily when infected with malware and I think I have it all clean with exception of a few small bugs. I would like to wipe it clean but my friend would like to save if possible. Spybot, Malwarebytes' Antimalware, and McAfee all say that infections are gone yet F8 does not work on startup and chkdsk states that the disk might have errors. Registry Mechanic also show recurring "problems."Spybot has removed the following infections;

Cydoor, WhenU.ClockSync, Fraud.XPAntivirus, MyWay.MySearch, Hotbar, Gain.Gator, Minibug, and MyWay.MyWebSearch.

I would like some other opinons as to whether or not anything still lingers on this machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thnks,

Sorry, this is my first time starting a thread,
Thanks for the HJT log, tashi has pinned a lot of valuable information to the top of the forum and it is all there for you.

I am seeing only adware and a few dangerously out of date programs. I would be glad to look at your uninstall list and advise you if you will post it.

chkdsk states that the disk might have errors
Did you run chkdsk? It is best to set it up at night, then let it run first thing at bootup. You can not do anything else while it is running. Make sure you check the box to have anything found fixed, and look at the report to see if anything could not be fixed. That would be a sign your hard drive might be on the way out, how old is the computer.
I also suggest the computer be defragged as soon as chkdsk is complete, keep in mind chkdsk can take a couple of hours.
If you are not familiar with the proceedure and need tutorials posted, let me know.

Let's do some cleaning in the numbered order.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

5) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

Add any comments you think will help.

Thanks...Phil

The odd thing about running chkdsk is that if I use a boot CD the option to run the recovery console is not available. If I use run while in windows to schedule chkdsk for the next boot using "chdsk /C /F" the result is a very short scan and the error regarding the disk. I will run the clean tools in the order you recommend. In the mean time, here is my uninstall list from cCleaner:

Recovery Console should be on a Windows XP Operating System CD. I have Dell's without it because those are restore CD's and not actual Windows XP Operating System CD's.

I personally start it here:
MyComputer > C drive > right click and choose Properties > Tools > Check now.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.

Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more, here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested: https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

Thanks for returning your information. MBAM picked up some adware in the registry, but nothing else.

How's the computer running, any malware issues?

Thanks...Phil

Everything seems to be running fine, thanks to your prompt and valuable assistance. I let Chkdsk go while I was at work and i didnt get the initial disk error message that I was getting before. If this was my computer I would gather all my data and reformat but to each their own! Thanks for the awesome help!:beerbeerb:

Thanks for the feedback, and a reformat is not always a bad thing. I have an older Compaq (Win98) that I really loaded up back when I thought a butten that said "download" had to be clicked. I was about to trash it when I decided to try a reformat with the original disks. Computer runs like it did ten years ago.
