View Full Version : Smitfraud-C found by S&D search in ENLOCSTR.EXE System32 Folder

Hello, here's an odd one.
On a whim, I scanned the System 32 folder last night with S&D (When I was Un-Rar-ing a folder, it instantly directed me to System32, thus why I wanted to scan it). Sure enough ENLOCSTR.EXE (4096 bytes) had Smitfraud-c as Malware, in the search (nothing on the heuristic scan).
Yet it doesn't pop-up when I run a normal full PC search in the S&D app.
Having been a victim of Smitfraud years ago, I ran smitRem and smitfraudfix in safe mode. Neither removed the infection.
ALSO... when I ran safe mode as administrator (XP SP3), the file was not infected... it's only showing as infected as my normal log-in (in both safe mode and normal start-up).
Here's my HJT, many thanks in advance for any assistance. Hope I'm doing this right. Been about 2 years, since I had any kind of viral/malware infection. :oops:

Is this just something unheard of?
I know I posted at a busy time, but I assumed that it was just a stubborn Smitfraud.
A few more runs have provided the same result.
Am I doing something wrong?

I scanned System32 again today, just to se if maybe it was a false positive. It definitely is not. I found more infected files on the heuristic scan side, and decided to run Avast tonight. I keep the scanner on, but don't do many manual searches, because I have close to 700 gigs of info on my PC. I know... bad idea. Avast found 2 rar folders that were infected... in all places, they were in my iTunes folder, which I simply never look at.
Anyway here's the new infections. I'll post a HJT and scan results when I get home.

Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.
Posting additional comments or logs before a volunteer responds, can push you back instead of forward, because your thread ends up with a newer date. Also, helpers may think you are already being assisted because of the post count.

ENLOCSTR.EXE <<< Prevz says that file is safe and there is no obvious malware showing in the HJT log. Does not mean junk can not be hidden. Let's start looking with MBAM.
1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
3) I would like a look at your uninstall list also:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Please view this information:
You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.

Symantec AntiVirus and Avast4 <<< uninstall one of those.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,

Once you have complete the above instructions, I see Kaspersky Online Scanner. Update it and scan using these instructions.
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Then post it here along with a new HJT log.

First of all thanks alot for the helpful advice.
The scans proved to be futile unfortunately. Only spybot found the SmitFraud-C. and other infections in the system32 and windows folders. With the absolute need to have my computer functioning virus free, for my business today; I begrudgingly reinstalled windows as a last resort. Obviously that was the ultimate solution to the problem. Scanned for false positives this time around with S&D, MBAM, Windows Defender and Symantec and nothing was found. I noticed ENLOCSTR.EXE is now lowercase. Definitely a wary hint from now on.
As a note, running every known SmitFraud fix program out there in every possible mode did not alleviate the problem, nor detect it. I was a victim of SmitFraud from a hijacked site 2 years ago, and remembered well how to remove the culprit.
I believe this has to have been a stubborn or new variant.
