A few days ago McAfee found a Trojan (Fake Alert-BD). It quaranteened and got rid of. SpyBot then found win32.Agent.pz (don't know if the 2 are related, and it keeps coming back. Followed your instructions for SpyBot to remove and ran HJT. Here is the log:

What kind is it, how do I get rid of it and do I need to disconnect my computer from the internet???

Thanks

Hi

If possible, keep the system disconnected and get required tools using other machine.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode

On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer

Download
SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe)
and save it to your desktop. (If you can't download with this computer try to get it downloaded on some other one.)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the
following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the
Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press
Enter
.
Choose your usual account.

In Safe Mode, double click the SDFix.exe file. Click Install in appearing window,
Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to
start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.
It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the
registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool
will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and
display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load
your desktop icons.
Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the
contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with
a new HijackThis log

Did everything you said. When started in safe mode, I only have the choice of going into Administrator. When I click on that and the desktop comes up, SDFix is not on there.

I searched for it using IE, found it, clicked on RunThis.bat and it opens, but when I type Y, nothing happens. I also can't get into "my" directory where it was originally saved, it tells me access denied.

What next?

Hi

Probably cos you're logged in as different user in safe mode you can't access other user's folders.

Please try following previous instructions but do safe mode -part in normal mode this time.

Ok, I figured out some of the problem. Booting up in Safe Mode and not being able to access me has something to do with the Admin Privileges.

I have Admin Privileges, but just not in Safe Mode. I tried to run the program in regular mode. It self extracted, then I get this message:

SDFix has been extracted to %systemdrive%\SDFix\
(Drive that contains the Windows directory - typically C:\SDFix)

Open the SDFix folder in Safe Mode and double click the RunThis.bat file to start the fixtool
If RunThis.bat is started in Normal Mode, options to download and run Anti-Virus command line scanners are displayed

Catchme.exe Stealth Malware Detector by GMER is also included in the SDFix folder

Additional SDFix Instructions & screen shots can be found here - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic131299.html

Out of Curiosity, I looked in McAfee under the Reports and Logs/view logs/detection log and it found and repaired: FakeAlert-BD (Trojan) and quarantined: New Malware.bm (Trojan). The details for the quarantine are:
File: c:\SDFix\apps\CSWeg.exe
Process: C:\Documents and Settings\Sue & Eugene\ Desktop\Downloads\SDFix.exe

It looks to me as if McAfee quarantined the program I am trying to access. Could this be the problem???

Any suggestions???

Please keep McAfee disabled during SDFix run (you probably need to re-download SDFIX cos McAfee removed file from it).

Forgot to ask a question.

Can you tell by looking at this where the problem came from?? ie, what program or download, etc.

I purchased a program and have been trying to download it, but they are having trouble on their end. After it downloads and I try to install it, it gives me messages like: it can't install because of a corrupted file or bad self extraction file, etc. Just wondering if they have "the same problem" and gave it to me???

Thanks

Can you tell by looking at this where the problem came from?? ie, what program or download, etc.
Can't say for sure but P2P downloads and dubious websites are possible sources if you have used or visited any of them.

Have you stored the file to some permanent place (like desktop for example) before trying to install? If file is run without installing it to some permanent place first file may not run correctly.

Awaiting further instruction.

I just noticed the catchme.zip file and catchme.log on my desktop. I don't have a clue where these came from or what it even is???
Hi

Both of these have been created during the cleaning process. So, nothing to worry :) Did you install Adobe Reader latest version and uninstall previous ones yet?

We need to execute an OTMoveIt3 script
Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTMoveIt3.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click theOTMoveIt3 icon on your desktop.
Paste the following code under the Paste Fix Here area. Do not include the word
Code
.

:Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Sue & Eugene\Desktop\catchme.zip
C:\Documents and Settings\Tristen\Application Data\twext.exe

Push the large MoveIt button.
OTMI3 may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
Copy/Paste the contents under the Results line here in your next reply with a fresh hjt log.
If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

No, I didn't download Adobe yet. I've never heard of Foxit before so I am looking at that program. Are you a Foxit user?

In your "opinion" which one do you think is better? From what others have said on the Foxit website, Foxit doesn't use a lot of memory (very cool), and you can edit PDF documents (which is more than what you can do with Adobe). What I am trying to find out is if all these features come with the free version or if I have to purchase the program in order to use them.

Thanks.

Hi

Yes, I'm Foxit Reader user myself :)

Editing features are available only in pro version.

Hi

Looks like you had line break in the middle of first entry and that's why catchme.zip didn't get removed. Delete C:\Documents and Settings\Sue & Eugene\Desktop\catchme.zip file manually (remember to empty Windows recycle bin after that).

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
Double-click My Computer. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab.
Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
Under the
Hidden files
folder, select
Show hidden files and folders.
Check
Hide protected operating system files.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Out of curiosity, Spybot is set to automatically check, which I did this morning (before I got SpywareBlaster installed). The first time it ran, it showed that nasty win32.agent.pz. After I finished installing SpywareBlaster and went through the tutorial, I did another Spybot scan and it didn't show up. The following is the report from Spybot. These cookies keep showing up. Are these anything to worry about? If they are, how do I get rid of them??

I have finished installing the updates for Windows, still working on Microsoft products. Other than this, I haven't had any problems.

What is your opinion about the hosts file? I haven't downloaded it yet because I am not sure if I should since it's optional. But, I have kids in the house that use this computer for homework, will this give me added protection and piece of mind?

Let me know what you need.

Thanks.

These cookies keep showing up. Are these anything to worry about? If they are, how do I get rid of them??
To get rid of most cookies for good I recommend setting up (and updating regularly) the hosts file.

What is your opinion about the hosts file? I haven't downloaded it yet because I am not sure if I should since it's optional. But, I have kids in the house that use this computer for homework, will this give me added protection and piece of mind?
Hosts file will make surfing safer. However, it still won't make common sense needless. For example dubious sites should be avoided. So how did I get infected in the first place? (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279) article by TonyKlein is worth reading :)
