Hello, After going to a specific website ive been getting constant "threat detected" warnings on AVG "file name c/windows/svchost.exe" "threat name trojan hourse agent_r.dp".
I have tried avg and spybot scans in normal and safe mode to no avail. I disconnected infected comp from the internet after the first couple of warnings, but Im not able to connect at all anymore on that computer.
Any help would be much appretiate.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

I suggest you avoid a website that looks like it is infected.

There is so much junk anymore, I an not sure what this is. Since you said: "Smitfraud-c.gp" We will look for that first.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hey Kelley, if I remember right you help me out a while back, thanks for the response. Im not sure if this matters or not, but when I get the warning every 10-20 seconds from AVG it says "detected on open". Anyway, below is the rapport as requested.

Thanks for returning your information, Smitfraudfix found the infection.
After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file (items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from
the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infected files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

Tell me how the computer is running now, any issues?

Due to a hectic schedule the last couple of days the smitfraudfix, and the HJT were ran a day apart, I hope that isnt a big deal. After running Smitfraudfix.exe in safe mode, cleaning the registry, then restarting I was still getting the same AVG threat alerts. Here is the rapport and HJT log.

I was still getting the same AVG threat alerts.
I need complete information, what are the alerts exactly, word for word. What is the name and LOCATION of the item you are being alerted about.

Please continue as follows:

1) Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link

Im guessing the "file name" is the location since it has a path? I listed what was said on the alert in my original post, but I will try to be as detailed as I can here, I hope this helps.

"Resident Sheild alert
Threat Detected!
File name: C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe
Threat name: Trojan horse Agent_r.DP
Detected on open"

In the "details" at the bottom of the alert window it reads...

"Process Name: C\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
Process ID: 1052"

The "process ID" number does vary though.

If a minute or 2 goes by before I press the "heal" button I get another Resident Shield alert that reads...

"Multiple threat detection"

with a couple to many (depending how long it took to hit heal) of the exact same threats on the infection list. Same file name, threat name, and process ID.
In that window if I hit "Remove threats" I get another window that reads in red...

"Some files cannot be healed"
Followed by
"Specific file was not found." repeated for what seems to be as many threats that were shown on the infections list in the "multiple threat detection" window.

I can take screenshots of these alerts and save them in whatever format you like if needed.


Anyway, I followed your instructions and here are the reports you asked for. After combofix ran, restarted the comp, then put together the report I reactivated resident shield ect. All seemed fine at first, but after a restart the threat alerts continued.

Thanks Mike, for returning you information and the feedback. This one has me a little puzzled.
c:\windows\svchost.exe <<< this is removed by combofix (valid svchost.exe should be in the System32 folder) when you ran combofix at:
ComboFix 08-11-03.03 - MW 2008-11-03 21:18:09.1 and recreated here:
2008-11-03 21:22 . 2008-11-03 21:22 22,528 --a------ c:\windows\svchost.exe
Unless you were online so you could get reinfected, then something recreated that file that is on the computer?

It is also showing in the HJT log:

This is a backdoor trojan, let's see if SDFix wil remove it:

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

I definitely was not online at the time, I disconnected the comp from the router / modem when I first saw the threat alert. If I remember right while reading the instructions for combofix, doesnt it disconnect your internet connection while its running anyway? Perhaps I did something wrong while running combofix?

There is a line in my HJT log with a url to gamehouse .com, that isnt a site im familar with or remember ever going to, could that be anything? Then again looking at these logs is almost like trying to read chinese to me. :)

Im at work right now, when I get home I will uninstall any P2P programs and follow your instructions on SDFix.

No problem, what has me wondering is that both Smitfraudfix and combofix indicated they removed the item and it appears it is being put back. We may have a Rootkit infection returning the junk. If SDFix does not kill it, we will run Kaspersky Online Scan to see if it shows the hidden junk, thanks for the feedback.

Ok I followed all instructions and here are the reports. I have 2 HJT logs, one taken right after the SDfix report was complete, and one after a restart. they are slightly differant, Im posting only the first one assuming the differance between the two wouldnt matter.

I notice the line on the SDFix report that reads "Trojan Files Found: C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe - Deleted". But yes, I am still getting the threat alerts. Stubborn little bastard isnt he!

I also noticed this line in the report...
"C:\\Program Files\\Soulseek-Test\\slsk.exe"="C:\\Program Files\\Soulseek-Test\\slsk.exe:*:Enabled:SoulSeek"

Im not sure why this might show. I followed your instructions and uninstalled this program as well as bit torrent ( assuming that fell into the p2p category ) and restarted before ever running SDFix.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here along with a new HJT log.

Its an AVG resident shield alert as described in post #7 of this thread,


"Resident Sheild alert
Accessed file is infected (< I left this line out last time sorry )
Threat Detected!
File name: C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe
Threat name: Trojan horse Agent_r.DP
Detected on open"

In the "details" at the bottom of the alert window it reads...

"Process Name: C\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
Process ID: 1052"

The "process ID" number does vary though.



I cannot access the internet on the infected computer, so I cant do an online scan....

I am not sure how to proceed here, I have run three tools that deleted that item: C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe <<< this is the trojan

C\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe <<< this is the valid file

You may want to consider a reformat.

Ok, ill give that a try when i get some free time, maybe ill retry one or two of the steps we allready went thru first, and if not ill attempt the reformat.

Yes, read the directions in the links I posted. The only way a problem wouold occur would be if you saved infected files and reinstalled them. This is the reason a clean backup of all important files should be kept at all times.
