View Full Version : XP AV 2009, popups, various spyware

I'm helping a friend so I don't know the past history, but she was ready to "sell the computer

due to so many popups!"

I saw XP AV 2009 (which she bought ), tried to run SpyBot, but I had to rename it first.

I've run it until it's clear, except I'm not sure that it actually removed XP AV 2009... and I

haven't yet tried any of the manual removes for it. I know the system is not clean since the

popups continue even now...

I'll post the current HJT log in the next post.

And thanks for the help!

Pete

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

Posting additional comments or logs before a volunteer responds, can push you back instead of forward, because your thread ends up with a newer date. Also, helpers may think you are already being assisted because of the post count.

Hey Pete, some nasty stuff, expect this to take a while, let's start like this.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed

Please continue as follows:

*Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

*Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Post that report and a new HJT log

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Thanks...Phil

Hi Phil,

Sorry for the double post last time... I'm familiar with the "before you post" page. Just didn't think...

FYI: Prior to this I have run nothing but Spybot and HJT on the computer (per instructions).

Ran ComboFix per instructions. All went well. System s seems to run better, but still suspect background activity when internet connection is restored.

CF & HJT logs posted below.

Thanks Pete, for returning your information and the feedback, please read an follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282

If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.
LimeWire <<< uninstall all p2p programs.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ofocidy.pif
C:\Documents and Settings\Katie\Application Data\cocenof.vbs

Folder::
C:\Documents and Settings\Katie\Application Data\GetModule

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(this BHO is damaged, if you use it, install it again when we finish)
O2 - BHO: McAntiPhishingBHO - {377C180E-6F0E-4D4C-980F-F45BD3D40CF4} - c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee\msk\mcapbho.dll (file missing)

(if you think these really need TZ status, you may leave them)
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://fileforum.betanews.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.kaspersky.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.trendsecure.com

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.

6) Please post the uninstall list:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

How is the computer running now?

Thanks...Phil

Removed LimeWire. (Could not find it in add/remove software, not in start menu... deleted files in C:\Program Files\LimeWire & C:\Documents and Settings\Katie\Application Data\LimeWire.)

Ran ComboFix w/ CFScript. (Note: it indicated a newer version was available, I allowed the update, but it failed and said it would use the current version.) All went well. Log posted.

Ran HJT, removed 4 items. (TZs were needed initially, but no longer.)

Ran ATF Cleaner, all well.

Ran Malwarebytes per instructions. All went well. Log posted.

Ran HJT. Log posted.

Wouldn't restart after the above proceedures... shutdown/restart yields normal operation, restart now works.

FYI, I have "upgraded" her to FireFox 3, no more IE for her!

Seems to be running ok now, no more flurry of activity when internent connection is made. If all looks good to you I think we are ready for the final operations.

Thanks, Pete

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. I need a HJT log that is not formatted: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

Note: In notepad under Format, uncheck "Word Wrap" Produce all HJT logs like this, single spaced.
single-spaced - (of type or print) not having a blank space between lines.
Please leave "word wrap" off until we finish, for all logs.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.

Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested: https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Reader 7.0.9 <<< out of date and being exploited
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
Java(TM) 6 Update 6
See this> http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

Viewpoint Media Player <<< uninstall if not needed
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

Post the unformatted HJT log, and if it offers no surprises, we will start wrapping up.

Thanks

Petez

Thanks for the feedback, the HJT log looks clean to me, let's finish up like this.

Remove combofix from the computer:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, no need to post a clean scan result.

Update AVG and scan the system to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close this topic.

We still have something going on... here's what I got.

ComboFix removed.

System Restore cleaned/reset.

Ran Malwarebytes, scan = clean. The system had been left connected to the internet for some hours.

Thinking we were good to go at this point, I enabled Tea Timer, and let SpyBot immunize. I also installed AVG Free, but did not scan at that point. Tea Timer warned of some registry entries, which I allowed as they seemed to be related to repairs. (Old entries were to trojan EXEs, new entries were single word entries, no paths, EXEs, DLLs, ect....)

So instead of running AVG I re-ran Malwarebytes and got this:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.30
Database version: 1341
Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3

10/30/2008 11:47:35 PM
mbam-log-2008-10-30 (23-47-35).txt

None of the above looked like the things I allowed in Tea Timer.

Then I ran AVG and got:

I have disabled Tea Timer again, and left AVG active for the moment.

I will include a HJT log from this morning.

Sorry if I got something wrong, but it looks like there is still something lurking around. I'll disconnect from the net and wait to hear back from you.

Thanks, Pete

Thanks for the feedback, let's see what we can do about this with the tools we have onboard first. The tools may be seeing junk in other programs Quarantine and Virus Vault, let's find out.

First you need to get control over those tracking cookies, see this:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/privacy/config.mspx
Some are needed for passwords, but most are of no benefit to anyone but the folks who put them there.

I also suggest you put a good Hosts file in place, this will explain what it does:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {377C180E-6F0E-4D4C-980F-F45BD3D40CF4} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0004-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_04)
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0006-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_06)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Open MBAM and under the Update tab, Check for Updates. Once you are sure you are updated, then click the Quarantine tab. Delete anything in quarantine.

5) Open AVG then click History at the top then Virus Vault. Delete anything in there.

6) Clean System Restore files:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

7) Run ATF Cleaner (make sure you choose Select All)
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:

8) Restart the computer

9) Scan with MBAM, post the results only if it finds something you have questions about.

10) Right click the icon for AVG in System Tray and choose Open AVG User Interface.

*Click on Update now, allow AVG to download and install any new updates.

*Click on Computer Scanner then choose "Scan whole computer", this takes about one hour on the computer I am using now.

*Near the bottom above the words "The scan is complete" choose "Export overview to file"

*Choose Desktop and give it a name you will recognize like AVG Scan Results, then choose SAVE.

*Close results and close the Interface.

*Copy and paste the contents of that file if I request it or you have something you think I should see.

Please let me have some feedback at this point.

Thanks

This is what is strange, since my working on this computer, no one else is using it. And I switched it to FF. And I'm not using it beyond the sites you send me to. So they must be being set by some other means. (As described in the first link in your last post?) But I think we got them all this time...

------------------

Installed new hosts file.

Tea Timer had already been disabled again.

Removed all Tea Timer entries.

Removed entries with HJT.

Cleared MBAM quarantine, and AVG vault.

Cleaned system restore files.

Ran ATF cleaner.

Scan with MBAM = clean.

Scan with AVG = clean.

Thanks for the help!

I'll be returning the computer today, with some stern warnings. ;)

Closing in a couple days sounds fine.
