Have had these about a week, identified via Spybot 1.4, couldn't remove them, then upgraded to 1.6, still couldn't remove them. Ran multiple times both in normal Windows mode and safe mode, but no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Additional Notes
Your Adobe Acrobat Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Adobe Reader is a large program and uses unnecessary space.
If you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php << Recommended
There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available.
Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)
Click Download
On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
Click the Continue button
Click Run, and click Run again
Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts
When the installation is complete go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.
Adobe Reader 7.0.9
Hi, Katana, thanks again for your help. You had mentioned lack of AV software, but I have ESET's NOD32 installed. I have it set up to update nightly, but I've taken this computer offline except when necessary when I found the infections, so it was about a week and a half outdated. I've just updated it, so I should be good to go. I noticed you offered two different AV programs - is NOD32 a quality product?
The computer seems to be running OK speed-wise. About a month ago, I noticed it slowing down significantly at times, but then went out of town and didn't investigate until I got back. When I got back, I was getting a message that "the computer is infected" that was in the middle of the screen for all users on the system, and it tried to direct me to a site to download a spyware program (I didn't). That appears to be gone, now. I haven't re-scanned with Spybot yet, since the forum instructions are pretty clear about not going off and doing things without direction. But I'm hopeful that I won't find Smitfraud or Stration still on here.
A quick question for you: I have an external drive that I used to do nightly backups (full on one night, incremental on the other nights). Is there a chance that is infected? I use Retrospect, so the backup files are in their proprietary format, and I don't even know if scanning it will find problems if they existed. Any suggestions?
OK, here are the logs...

I've just updated it, so I should be good to go. I noticed you offered two different AV programs - is NOD32 a quality product?
As long as NOD is updated, that is fine.
And yes NOD32 is a very good product.
I haven't re-scanned with Spybot yet, since the forum instructions are pretty clear about not going off and doing things without direction.
That's quite correct, it is better if you only use the tools we suggest during the cleaning process.
We can run S&D again soon to make sure there are no remains.
A quick question for you: I have an external drive~. Is there a chance that is infected?
It depends what files you have set to backup, If you performed a backup while you were infected, then it is possible that the infection was carried over.
I recommend that you plug in the external drive and re-scan at Kaspersky.
You can select that drive to be scanned.
Let's see what it shows.
OTMoveIt
Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTMoveIt3.exe) and save it to your desktop
Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.

[EmptyTemp]
Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
Click the red Moveit! button.
Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
Close OTMoveIt3
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
I ran OTMoveIt and forgot to turn off the NOD32 monitor, so on the first file the monitor stated it moved the file to quarantine. After that, OTMoveIt locked up and wasn't responding, so I ended it. I turned off the monitor and re-ran it, and it looked like it ran OK. The log popped up in the window, but I had to reboot, so couldn't copy it. However, once the reboot was done, OTMoveIt started up again and displayed the following log:

Thanks again.
That looks fine, are there any problems you can see ?
Run Spybot, let's make sure that the items it was finding have been removed.
Good news, Smitfraud and Stration appear to be gone. The scan did find one item about Task Manager, not sure what it means. I've posted the S&D text log below.
I also scanned the external drive with Kaspersky, nothing bad found at all.
Thanks.

Hint of the Day: Click the bar at the right of this to see more information! ()
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.TaskManager: [SBI $B2E55F62] Settings (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system\DisableTaskMgr
Are you able to access Task Manager ?
Right click the task bar and select Task Manager.
Yes, I actually thought about that after my last post and tried it. I am able to bring Task Manager up with all the tabs.
Yes, I actually thought about that after my last post and tried it. I am able to bring Task Manager up with all the tabs.
It was probably the infection that disabled it, and the removal has re-enabled it.
You can ignore that.
Congratulations your logs look clean :)
Let's see if I can help you keep it that way
First lets tidy up
Open OTMoveIt Click Cleanup,
it will now connect to the internet and get a list of files to delete.
When a box pops up click YES.
Delete any logs we have produced and empty your recycle bin
Reset System Restore.
Now you should disable System restore to purge any infected files and then re-enable it,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer
Turn ON System Restore
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Enable Teatimer
RIGHT click Link >>> HERE <<< Link (http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat) and select "save as" and save it to your desktop
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
Open Spybot S&D
Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
If your firewall raises a question, say OK
check the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
You can now delete ResetTeaTimer.bat
The following is some info to help you stay safe and clean.
( Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing )
You may already have some of the following programs, but I include the full list for the benefit of all the other people who will be reading this thread in the future.
Online Scanners
I would recommend a scan at one or more of the following sites at least once a month.
http://www.pandasecurity.com/activescan
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/71706/kavwebscan.html
!!! Make sure that all your programs are updated !!!
Secunia Software Inspector does all the work for you, .... see HERE (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/) for details
AntiSpyware
AntiSpyware is not the same thing as Antivirus.
Different AntiSpyware programs detect different things, so in this case it is recommended that you have more than one.
You should only have one running all the time, the other/s should be used "on demand" on a regular basis.
Most of the programs in this list have a free (for Home Users ) and paid versions,
it is worth paying for one and having "realtime" protection, unless you intend to do a manual scan often.
Spybot - Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/) <<< A must have program It includes host protection and registry protection A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
MalwareBytes Anti-malware (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php) <<< A New and effective program
a-squared Free (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/) <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner
superantispyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/) <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner
Prevention
These programs don't detect malware, they help stop it getting on your machine in the first place.
Each does a different job, so you can have more than one
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com) An excellent startup manager and then some !! Notifies you if programs are added to startup Allows delayed startup A must have addition
SpywareBlaster 4.0 (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.
SpywareGuard 2.2 (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) SpywareGuard provides real-time protection against spyware. Not required if you have other "realtime" antispyware or Winpatrol
ZonedOut (http://www.funkytoad.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=15&Itemid=33) Formerly known as IE-SPYAD, adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers and marketers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.
MVPS HOSTS (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip) This little program packs a powerful punch as it blocks ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers. Internet Browsers
Microsoft has worked hard to make IE.7 a more secure browser, unfortunately whilst it is still the leading browser of choice it will always be under attack from the bad guys.
Using a different web browser can help stop malware getting on your machine.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
If you are still using IE6 then either update, or get one of the following.
FireFox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/) With many addons available that make customization easy this is a very popular choice NoScript and AdBlockPlus addons are essential
Opera (http://www.opera.com/) Another popular alternative
Netscape (http://browser.netscape.com/addons) Another popular alternative Also has Addons available
Cleaning Temporary Internet Files and Tracking Cookies
Temporary Internet Files are mainly the files that are downloaded when you open a web page.
Unfortunately, if the site you visit is of a dubious nature or has been hacked, they can also be an entry point for malware.
It is a good idea to empty the Temporary Internet Files folder on a regular basis.
Tracking Cookies are files that websites use to monitor which sites you visit and how often.
A lot of Antispyware scanners pick up these tracking cookies and flag them as unwanted.
CAUTION :- If you delete all your cookies you will lose any autologin information for sites that you visit, and will need your passwords
Both of these can be cleaned manually, but a quicker option is to use a program
ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=25) Free and very simple to use
CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) Free and very flexible, you can chose which cookies to keep

The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.
If you follow this advice then (with a bit of luck) you will never have to hear from me again :D
If you could post back one more time to let me know everything is OK, then I can have this thread archived.
Happy surfing K'
Sorry for the delay, had problems getting on the site last night.
First, let me say "thank you" for all the help you've given me over the past several days. Everything now appears to be working correctly. I've completed the remaining tasks you suggested, but I have a couple of questions.
1) You requested I remove the logs we've generated - does that mean in the main software directories of the applications? I've already removed the copies I put on the desktop.
2) I'll keep Malwarebytes and Kaspersky, but should I remove the following programs:
- HiJackThis - assume I'd just use the newest version should this ever happen again
- RSIT (doesn't appear to have a program folder, just an .exe on the desktop?)
- OTMoveIt - I wouldn't attempt to use this without instruction
3) After installing the latest Java, a file named "jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe" and the JavaRa.exe file remain on the desktop. Should I delete them, leave it alone or move them to the c:/program files/Java/jre6 folder? Incidently, I noticed there is still a c:/program files/Java/jre1.5.0_12 folder that exists with a lot of files in it - I thought we removed all old versions of Java? Should I uninstall this version?
Lastly, let me say "thank you" again for your time and expertise. You've saved me a great deal of time and trouble, and I appreciate it. I don't have the skills to ever help you directly in kind, but I will "pay it forward". Thanks.

It is entirely up to you, we mainly just clean up the desktop of any logs.
It doesn't matter if you leave or remove the others.
2) I'll keep Malwarebytes and Kaspersky, but should I remove the following programs:
- HiJackThis - assume I'd just use the newest version should this ever happen again

HiJackThis - you can unistall or leave, entirely your choice.
RSIT - delete the .exe from your desktop
OTMI - When you did the OTMI clean up in the last post, that should have been removed automatically ?
3) After installing the latest Java, a file named "jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe" and the JavaRa.exe file remain on the desktop. Should I delete them, leave it alone or move them to the c:/program files/Java/jre6 folder? Incidently, I noticed there is still a c:/program files/Java/jre1.5.0_12 folder that exists with a lot of files in it - I thought we removed all old versions of Java? Should I uninstall this version?
JavaRa should have uninstalled jre1.5.0_12, please try running it again with all other programs closed and see if the folder still exists.
Then you can delete JavaRa.exe.
You can delete jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe
I think you can archive me! I removed HJT and RSIT, you were right, OTMI was already gone, I reran JavaRa and the old version is completely gone and I deleted JavaRa and the .exe program.
System is running GREAT! I also tightened things up using your's and the Forum's suggestions, downloaded some extra protection and increased the frequency of scheduled downloads and scans.
I hope you don't get tired of hearing it, because I'm saying it again...
THANKS!!
