I have used the free versions of Spybot for quite some time. As a testament to its reliability, my first/last login on this forum was 10/16/2006, and I have never had to ask anything.

Now, when I click to search for updates I get an error message saying an illegal operation has been performed, followed by my PC locking up. It happens every time I try.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Start with the basics.
What Operating System are you running?
What version of Spybot are you running (Spybot>Help>About)?

I have a dinosaur which has been limping along quite well, WIN97.

& spybot 1.5.2.

Check For Problems works fine, saying I have none, but . . .

You are using an Out-of-date Version of Spybot please remove it and install 1.6. Also Please Read This (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=34563) Post Regarding Older Versions Of Spybot.

Thanks Terminator. Hm. A Windows 97? I'm pretty sure that is a Windows 98 you're talking about .

Please upgrade to the latest version of Spybot-Search&Destroy and see how that goes.

Yeah . . . or perhaps I have the experimental, early model.

We bought our lake house in '97. Computer, lake house . . similar.

The Operating System does not matter now, because we are focusing on your query.
Spybot-Search&Destroy is not really a "experimental" version, but just a older version if you compare it to now. The current version is v.1.6.0.30.

Spybot 1.6 has a lot more advantages and is improved compared to the older versions, thus why we encourage you to upgrade.
