I first posted about this on the Spybot forum, but was advised to post here. Please help.

Spybot reveals that my computer is infected with Zlob.DNSChanger which Spybot apparently removes, but the Trojan then comes back again. I am running Windows XP Professional SP3 on a computer with two hard drives in a Raid array. The Hijack record after my last use of Spybot appears below:

Hi

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer to make sure it won't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode

On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer

Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Thank you very much for your help. I have done some of the things you told me to do, but am stuck because I do not have Windows Recovery Console installed and do not seem able to install it. ComboFix tried to install it, but failed. I then tried to install it from my original XP CD with SP2, but of course this failed because I updated some time ago over the Internet to SP3.

How can I install the recovery console?

Hi

Did you get any error message while Combo tried installing?

minoan

Yes, there was an error message but it flashed up for a very short time. It was something to the effect that it could not downlooad the files for Windows Recovery Console. CombiFix then started to scan my computer, which I very quickly aborted, since you stressed that I must have the Console installed before the scan took place. I need a method to install Recovery Console into a computer which is running XP SP3, but for which the only disc I have is XP SP2. Is there a Microsoft procedure for doing that?

Hi

Let's skip over recovery console part for now. We'll install it later if needed :)

Just run ComboFix now and post back its report & a fresh hjt log when ready.

Installation:

* Download Navilog1 from one of the following links:

http://pagesperso-orange.fr/il.mafioso/Navifix/Navilog1.exe
or
http://il-mafioso.changelog.fr/Navifix/Navilog1.exe

* Right click on the above link and choose Save target as and save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click on navilog1.exe to install it.

Option #1:

* Once installation is completed, open on Navilog1 on your Desktop.
* On main menu, choose 1
* Follow the instructions and wait.
* Wait for the *** Search completed ….*** message (It may take a reasonable amount of time)
* Press any key as requested.
* A new notepad document will be produced: fixnavi.txt.
* Please copy/paste the contents of this report in your next reply.

The report fixnavi.txt is also saved in %systemdrive%. (usually C:\)

After that open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\temp\VCdefs.vbs

Folder::
C:\Documents and Settings\Noel\Application Data\uTorrent

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) as instructed in the screenshot here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif).

Post back its report, a fresh hjt log and above mentioned ComboFix resultant log.

Hi, Thank you very much. I now send back to you the reports that you requested. I am slightly puzzled that Kaspersky does not seem to report Zlob.DNSChanger, as does Spybot, but perhaps Kaspersky has a different name for the same malware.

Hi

You need to reinstall Intel Matrix Storage Manager to make it work properly again. There was namely found a patched file that couldn't be fixed and so we have to nuke it.

Show hidden files
-----------------
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Delete following files if found:
C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\Iaanotif.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Noel\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Hotmail (sk 7fc\Inbox\43884C2C-000038F2.eml
C:\Documents and Settings\Noel\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Hotmail (sk 7fc\Inbox\63192342-00004314.eml
C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\iaanotif.exe
J:\MY DOCUMENTS\Maliotis\Re My news1.eml

and folder:
F:\Program Files\PDF Password Cracker Enterprise v3.0

Reboot and do a re-scan with Kaspersky online scanner. Post back its report & a fresh hjt log. How's the system running?

I have done some of what you advised, and am at present scanning with Kaspersky. However when trying to delete Iaanotif.exe and iaanotif.exe in both cases Access was Denied. Also I could not find 63192342-00004314.eml. What can I do about this?

The system is running, but when using Google there is often redirection to sites I have not sought.

Hi

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

KILLALL::

File::
C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\Iaanotif.exe
C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\iaanotif.exe

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log, Kaspersky report & a fresh hjt log.

Hi, Thanks. Below I give the ComboFix log (removal of Iaanotif.exe), then the rescan Kaspersky report, then the fresh Hjt log. The systen is a bit slow, and there are still the unexpecyed redirection events.

there are still the unexpecyed redirection events
Is your system connected to the internet thru a router? Could you log into it and check DNS primary & secondary server addresses, please?

I have deleted both these files and have cleared them from the Recycle Bin.
I connect to the Internet through a Netgear WGT 524 wireless firewall router and a DM602 ADSL modem. The DNS settings are dynamically assigned, but the following may answer your DNS queries?

C:\Documents and Settings\Noel>ipconfig /all

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : desktop
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown

WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

I was guessing that the unexpected redirection events were caused by the Zlob.DNSChanger Trojan, if correctly identified by SpyBot as present on my computer.

Hi

You have to do a hard reset for your router and/or your ADSL modem since infection hacked into it/them and changed dns settings there. After reset it's recommended to change password to something more difficult than the default one to avoid same thing happen again.

Hi.
Thank you very much, but I do not really know how to do this. Did you mean that I should remove the power from both the router and the modem, wait a minute, and re-connect? (I have done that, but IPconfig reports the same). Or do you mean that I should push the reset buttons on these units? I am nervous about doing this, in case I lose contact with the Internet and your advice.

For your information I just ran a Spybot scan (just a scan; I did not correct the problems found), and found that Zlob is still present, as you can see from the partial report below:

--- Search result list ---
Hint of the Day: Click the bar at the right of this to see more information! ()

Zlob.DNSChanger: [SBI $041D1396] TCP/IP Settings #1 (Undefined) (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DhcpNameServer=208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

Zlob.DNSChanger: [SBI $041D1396] TCP/IP Settings #2 (Undefined) (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{004248EF-B7DE-4A98-88F5-CF2EB6F69615}\DhcpNameServer=208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

As you will see, this Trojan seems to be present at two places, in the Registry?. Have we done anything yet which should have got rid of this Trojan? Is not this my major problem?

Hi

I think we've gotten rid of the Zlob that was in your workstation. However, it's not enough since, as I said, it seems to have changed DNS server addresses in your router and/or ADSL modem.

With reset I meant reset buttons on the devices.

It's a bit difficult to say without seeing whether resetting both devices is needed. That's why I wanted you to do a login into both devices and check DNS server IP addresses there. Do you think you could check those (screenshot showing the DNS settings in the devices would be best)?

Hi, I do not understand all this beyond a fairly basic level. When I log into the modem (192.168.0.1) it actually shows me the router settings, but it also shows me that the DNS addresses are got automatically from the ISP (Eclipse); there are no actual DNS addresses filled in. I do not know how to get, or send you, a screem shot, but if you tell me how to do this, I will do it.

I think that I may have discovered how to attach the screen shot if it is not too big

Hi

Could you also take a screenshot of DNS server settings in router too, please? It would be good if you could make it a little bigger this time :)

The last screen shot that I sent you was of the Router settings. I cannot get to any settings for the modem since it is acting purely as a pass through. I have just discussed all this very thoroughly with a Netgear engineer, who made the router and modem. He has confirmed that the DNS server settings are dynamically assigned by my ISP (Eclipse) every time that I open my browser (IE), and that neither the assignment of these settings by Eclipse, nor the router or modem could be affected by malware, though the DNS settings might well be corrupted subsequently by the operation of a Trojan within my OS or other software.

If you read a slightly earlier posting from me, you will be reminded that Spybot is still detecting Zlob.DNSChanger within my computer's OS, specifically at what seem to be 2 different places within the Registry (Hkey). I think that is this which seems to be the remaining problem. Is there a way in whhich these corrupted registry settings can be removed, or in which Zlob.DNSChanger can somehow be completely removed from my computer?

Hi

Can the Netgear engineer guarantee to you that your router/modem wasn't hacked due to weak/default passwords?

minoan
2008-11-04, 20:22
Probably not. On reflection I have begun to doubt whether a Netgear engineer can necessarily know very much about Trojans, and especially not such a fiendishly difficult one as Zlob - I have recently seen something about it on the TrendMicro site.

It does however remain the fact that I cannot get a screen shot for the modem, and Netgear may be correct here that this is because it is just acting as a feedthrough device? And what about the still existing reports by Spybot that Zlob is installed at 2 places in the Registry? Is Spybot wrong?

Anyway, how do we proceed now?

Hi

Those Spybot findings are ok (IP addresses there belong to OpenDNS.org). It's a bit difficult to make any progress here since I'm almost sure that router settings have been hacked. This wouldn't be the first time with this infection.

I rechecked the screenshot you attached and to me it looks like it reads Netgear ADSL modem settings there. Above you told me that you aren't able to get me a screenshot of modem settings but the screenshot says otherwise :)

If your modem works as a passthrough only then the problem possibly lies inside Netgear WGT 524 wireless firewall router settings. If you are not able to access those then only way to find out if the causer is modem or router is to take your computer to some other place (friend's house for example) with broadband internet connection and test there without using your Netgear DM602 modem or Netgear WGT 524 router.

Hi, Thank you very much. Yes, you are right about the screenshot I sent you. In the meantime my son (who is a network and Cisco engineer) returned from abroad; he immediately recognised your qualifications and told me that I ought to apologise for questioning your diagnosis, which I now do unreservedly. My son booted into safemode and managed to log into the router, and also examine the registry etc. He found that the DNS settings of the router were indeed weird, and was surprised that the Trojan seemed to prevent him from using the usual methods of dealing with the problems he saw. However he managed to delete some suspicious files and reset the DNS settings in the router to fixed ones chosen from OpenDNS. We also set proper passwords for the modem and router. A scan with Spybot now does not find Zlob and, with crossed fingers, the random site redirection seems to have gone. However I feel sure that there is more work to be done to put this problem to rest, and hope that you will be willing to help me with the final stages

It's all right. The main thing is that redirecting issue is now resolved :)

Please post a fresh hjt log and I'll see if there's need for further actions :)

Thanks. Here is the new hjt log. There may be something wrong, since when I started the computer this morning I could not connect to the Internet until I restored to a System Restore point which I had set late yesterday.

Hi again

The log looks ok :) How's your system running?

Hi, that is reassuring. At present my computer is running well, much faster than recently, and at present no redirection problems.

Do I need to do any tidying up, such as with Tea Timer etc., or installing Recovery Console, or System Restore, or anything else?

Do you, or the forums, have any specific recommendtions about the best antivirus and antimalware software, firewalls, etc., to use so as to try to avoid infection in the future with such horrible Trojans?

With many thanks for your expert and patient help.

You're welcome :)

Do you, or the forums, have any specific recommendtions about the best antivirus and antimalware software, firewalls, etc., to use so as to try to avoid infection in the future with such horrible Trojans?
Sunbelt protection software you have there should be good enough once kept up-to-date. There isn't product that would detect all possible threats. To protect oneself against this kind of infections it's good to have strong passwords set on hardware devices like routers for example.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTMoveIt3 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt3.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Hi,
I have done everything you suggested except load hosts. I think that I need to study that issue before risking any slow down of the system, which at present seems to be working well.

Thank you again for all your help.
