Hello,

I seem to be infected. I have a red circle with a white X in my task bar saying 'Your Computer is Infected...Click here to prtect your computer from spyware.' I believe it is a fake message intended to look like a message from Windows. After reading some other posts, I think it is Brastk, which also appears in my MSConfig window.

I am unable to run either Hijack This or Spyware Search and Destroy. When i try to run either of these programs, nothing happens. I tried to rename hijakcthis.exe to renamed.exe but it still wouldn't run. I have no idea what to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as i don't know if i should be using this computer. Previously, i had been unable to surf the net, but that seems to be working now.

Thank you very much for your help,

Solly0

Hi

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized, if not you'll find it in c:\rsit folder)

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

µTorrent

I'd like you to read the this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282).

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Uninstall also vulnerable Java(TM) 6 Update 6 thru add/remove programs.

Delete these folders afterwards:

C:\Program Files\uTorrent
C:\Documents and Settings\Ben Solomon\Application Data\uTorrent

Empty Recycle Bin.

After that:

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs (Ad-watch and TeaTimer if enabled) so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Hi

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

After that please try running ComboFix again :)

Hi Blade,

Thank you for your help and sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I was out of town. When i returned last night, i saw your post and when i tried to start my computer i could only start in Safe Mode. When i tried to start in Normal mode, the computer would just restart over and over again.

I was able to download the program using my laptop and save it to my flash drive. Then i copied the installation file to my desktop and installed the program.

I was not able to download any updates after installing the program because i was in safe mode and couldn't connect to the internet but I ran the program without updateing.

The computer restarted half way thru the scan the first time i tried to scan but the second time it worked.

Hi

Can't you still access normal mode? What about ComboFix, did you run it yet?

Hello Blade,

I was still only able to start the computer in safe mode. I did manage to run combofix in safe mode though. The program said it didn't have the recovery console installed but needed to have access to the internet to install it (which i dont currently have). It also said it was running in Reduced Functionality Mode. I don't know why.

when combo fix was runing it rrebooted into what looded like normal mode but after it was finished, i tried to restart and the computer would only boot into safe mode. When i start the computer the 'boot menu' appears. I select start in Normal mode but the computer seems to loop while starting, and only returns me to the boot menu. I can now (and have only been able to) only go into safe mode.

Here is the log file from combo fix:

Hi

Please get latest version of ComboFix from one of these locations to replace old ComboFix.exe file:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

Then run ComboFix again (in safe mode if needed).

Hello Blade,

Thanks for your reply.

The computer seems to be acting the same way it was before. I am still unable to boot into Normal mode and when i boot into safe mode, I am unable to run Combofix (the version i downloaded from the link you provided in your last post).
When i click the icon, the hourglass appears for a few seconds and then it goes away and nothing happens. I wait for a few minutes and then look in Task Manager. I see Combo Fix running on the processes tab but nothing is happening.
I also tried to run Malwarebytes Anti Malware since I was able to run that program before, and then run Combo fix, but that program doesn't run either.
The one program that does run is RSIT.exe. For what it is worth, i ran it and posted the log file below.

Also, I don't know if this means anything but today when i was logging in, i got a message (first time ive seen this) saying Your system has no paging file or it is too small.

Hi

Let's give ComboFix one more try. Follow instructions below:
1. Move Combo-Fix.exe file from your desktop to root of C: drive (C:\). That way we can access it on every account.

2. Try running ComboFix thru in safe mode with command prompt. Here are steps to follow (print/save these since you won't be able to access them while in safe mode):
Press F8 before Windows' loading screen and select safe mode with command prompt -option.
Then write following commands (I assume you moved ComboFix.exe to C: root):
cd\
ComboFix.exe

When ComboFix reboots select safe mode with command prompt again so that ComboFix will finish there.

Hello Blade,

Thanks for your reply.

I moved combofix the the c: drive and restarted into Safe mode with command prompt. I changed the directory to c: but when i typed in ComboFix.exe the cursor dropped to the next line but the program didn't start. I waited for about 30 mintues just in case it was running really slow but nothing hapenned.

I don't know what's going on with the computer. Hoping to not have to wipe it clean.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Hello Blade,

Well I think we made some progres tonight. I was able to run ComboFix (CF) after renaming it. Although it didn't exactly run smoothly (at least at first). I documented the whole process. I am sorry to give you such a long process, but i figured i would rather tell you the whole process and let you decide if it is relevant or not. Here is the sequence of events:

-renamed CF and rebooted into Safe mode w/ cmd prmpt
-ran CF
-CF restarted computer into normal mode (i wasn't quick enough on the F8 key to go back into Safe mode
-CF said it wasn;t latest version and updated
-CF rebooted again
-blue screen appeared on restart saying Checkins system files.. (it said it was prgrm called CHKDSK)
-reboot into normal mode
-blue cmd prmpt window appeard but nothing hapened (no messages in blue window). i didn't know but i figured this was CF but there was no text in the cmd window.
-during the time i was waiting for messages in blue cmd prmpt window, multiple alerts appeared from Spybot S&D and Comodo firewall (these start automatically on start up)
-i left computer for an hour to see if CF would continue
-came back an hour later, blue cmd prmpt window still blank.
-i manually closed blue cmd prmpt window and closed Spybot, Comodo, McAfee, BoClean
-i restarted CF
-CF tried to update again>>FAILED
-CF said Recovery console not installed and this time it successfully installed (thru internet i think)
-CF restarted computer into Normal mode
-after restarting all my security programs started again automatically (aarrgh!!)
-blue cmd window appeared (CF i think)
-this time got messages in blue cmd window from CF
-also got endless stream of alert messages from Comodo firewall and some from Spybot S&D about prgrams modifying other programs, reg keys, etc.
-most of the messages were about nircmd.exe and .com modifying files
-i didn't know if i should have allowed them or denied - i allowed them
- i got a LOT of these messages. I am guessing i need to run CF without these prgrms running but htey start automatically on start up
-CF finally finished and log file is posted below.
-i continue to get alerts from Comodo and Spybot after CF was finished.

After CF finished i restarted the computer and was able to start in Normal mode. Browser seems to be surfing the net well.

Again I truly appreciate your help and am very sorry for such a long message to you.

Thx,
Solly0

Hello Blade,

Here is the log file from HiJack This. Do i need all of these security prgms running on my computer all the time:
Spybot S&D
Comodo Firewall
McAfee On access scan
Comodo Bo Clean

Is it kind of overkill?

I truly appreciate you taking the time to help me out. Do you guys get paid for this? You definitely should. There are millions of dummies like me who would be a lot worse off with out you.

Thanks again,

Solly0

Do i need all of these security prgms running on my computer all the time:
Spybot S&D
Comodo Firewall
McAfee On access scan
Comodo Bo Clean

Is it kind of overkill?

Hi

All those programs operate against different threats so it's not overkill to use them :)

Do you guys get paid for this?
No, we do this voluntarily :)

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleanerİ by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) as instructed in the screenshot here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif).

Post back its report & a fresh hjt log
