View Full Version : Something's hijacked my browser
and though partially cleared isn't.
I had no anti virus protection on my machine for a while and had a problem where I couldn't access my c or d drive. (c:\resycled.boot.com)
I sorted that by doing the attrib thing from a cmd prompt but the machine is still not quite right.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.
Let's start like this:
1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdrej.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdrej.exe
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
4) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdrej.exe <<< delete that file
5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

The computer runs fine, the only problem is when i go on my computer i am unable to access the D drive directly - but can from files in the D drive on the desktop. The error message is: Windows cannot 'find resycled\boot.com'

Thanks for returning your information. Please be careful, you have cut off the header in the HJT log, that information is important.
The spelling seems wrong here: Windows cannot 'find resycled\boot.com' <<< would you please check the spelling and the EXACT wording and post it again.
Have you been using a flash drive or usb stick?

If so, do not use it again until it has been cleaned or reformated.
Files Infected:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{0FA31040-BE3D-4884-A07E-2D04FEC11DD9}\RP50\A0045226.sys (Rootkit.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
We need to clean System Restore files, do not use SR or this junk will be put back. Also the possibility of a rootkit infections exists, once I have the information below I will have a better idea of how to proceed.
I require this information before we proceed:
1) The exact wording of the error message, spelling correct.
2) Confirmation if you used a flash drive or usb stick.
3) A new "complete" HJT log.
4) Any other symptoms that are occuring.
5) Any additional information you think will help.

The spelling seems wrong here: Windows cannot 'find resycled\boot.com' <<< would you please check the spelling and the EXACT wording and post it again.

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Well the error message actually spelt it 'resycled' i think others have had this problem as when typed in on google some pages came up with the same error message?
