View Full Version : “Win32.Winlogons.co” & Other Trojans Infections

Hello.

My computer has become plagued with a number of problems and Trojans on my computer. The main results are my internet explorers connecting on minute and then not another, and my IP address apparently being on Open Proxy blocking sites.

Before I get into my issues, I recently was able to remove Smitfraud-C with Smitfraudfix. While I doubt that this caused these issues, I figured it may be useful to know.

When I start up my computer, I receive the following to messages:

-Message #1 (Windows): svchost.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x00401000" referenced memory at "0x00401000". The memory could not be "written"

CLick on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

-Message #2 (AVG Antivirus): Resident Shield alert

File name: C:\\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\tcpsr.sys
Threat name: Trojan horse SpamBot.G detected on open.

After these, I usually have issues with internet. Today, I debugged the Windows error message (#1), and I eventually received the following AVG Antivirus message:

-Resident Shield alert

Infection #1
File name: C:\WINDOWS\System32\uovgfv.dll
Threat name: Trojan horse Small.APC detected on open.

Infection #2
File name: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\2080303185exe
Threat name: Trojan horse Generic12.AIK detected on open.

Infection #3
File name: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\369088874exe
Threat name: Trojan horse Generic12.AIK detected on open.

Infection #4
File name: C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\1N7GANWX\w31tms[1].exe
Threat name: Trojan horse Generic12.AIK detected on open.

When I run SpyBot S&D 1.6.0, the only items are a Trojan called “win32.winlogons.co” with the following to Registry Key entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\tcpsr

I’ve tried to repair this with Spybot in both regular and safe mode, but it keeps coming back.

The HijackThis log is as follows:

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is peku006 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:

If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible.
Some steps will require you to use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

1- Download and Install SDFix
Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

2 - Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Login on your usual account.

3- Run SDFix

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

4 - Scan With ComboFix

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/whatnext.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

5 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

6 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the SDFix.Report.txt (C:\SDFix\report.txt)
2. the ComboFix log(C:\ComboFix.txt)
3. a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks peku006

peku006-

First, thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly.

I have run all the programs, and everything appears to be operating well (knock on wood). I am now taking steps to get off some Proxy blacklists. Apparently, my computer was being used to send out spam, so if I’m the one bombarding your inbox.

Anyway, here are my reports. Please let me know if everything looks fine from you end. I ran Spybot S&D, and nothing is showing up and AVG finds nothing.

Hi Bobby

One or more of the identified infections is a rootkit.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the rootkit has been identified and can be killed, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this rootkit, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)

We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let me know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Thanks peku006

Hi Peku006-

Sorry for the delayed response. Things in my personal and work life have been very hectic the past three days. Plus, the internet service I had access to was blocking forums. So, I’m sorry.

As for my computer, I think I see what you need. I supposedly had some viruses stored in the AVG vault. I accidentally released them, and then had something unholy unleashed on my computer. Long story short – it tried to take over my computer, changing all my internet explorer settings, and erasing my System Restore history and then started the only restore point to when it took over. So, I see what you mean by reformatting.

Saying that, I wanted to see if there was ANY way to work through this. If it doesn’t work, then I need to make sure I have all the necessary backups for my programs. While I can easily store my files on external hard drive(s), I am just concerned that I erase programs I don’t have the disks for. Plus, I’m still trying to find my OS backup.

Anyway, I went through same steps for the previous Trojan takeover. After my little blurb, you’ll find the 1) SDFix log, 2) ComboFix log, and 3) Hijackthis Log. Let me know your thoughts. Would something like UnHackMe (http://safecomputing.umn.edu/guides/scan_unhackme.html) help? Thanks for all your help. I’d have pulled out my hair for now if not for you. Have a good one…

Hi Bobby D

Sorry for the delayed response
Ok no problem.

Would something like UnHackMe help?
No ,because you computer is already infected

1 - Run CFScript

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

File::
c:\windows\system32\winwp.bm
c:\windows\system32\drivers\TDSSmqlt.sys
c:\windows\system32\Delete_Me_Dummy_karna.dat

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=""

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

2 - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1 (http://malwarebytes.gt500.org/mbam-setup.exe)
alternate download link 2 (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)

Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/database/mbam-rules.exe) and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:

Make sure the "Perform full scan" option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.
If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:

Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
The log can also be found here:

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

3 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

4 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the ComboFix log(C:\ComboFix.txt)
2. the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log
3. a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks peku006

Hey peku006

Before I get into the posting the logs, I wanted to let you know that after everything had scanned and I ran the logs, I then reactivated AVG. Not long after I did this, I received the following AVG alert:

Filename: C:\System Volume Information\restore{3DBD88D 2-9FFC-498B-A689-A4771362F918}\RP113\A0028200.EXE
Threat Name: Virus identified Win32/Virut.AE
Detected on open.

When I tried to heal it, I received the following message:
Healing not successful.

I have not received this notice since. Should I try running Anti-Malware again, but this time in safe mode? Just let me know, and thanks so much for the help.

Bobby

Hi Bobby

I wouldn’t know there was anything wrong if each time I ran a program,
which program ?

Logs, looks good but let's run one online scan to be sure

first......

Empty these folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\CJ\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0
C:\Documents and Settings\CJ\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{B32D48CA-91FC-4570-8853-6AD2EA99D834}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Deleted Items
C:\Documents and Settings\CJ\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\archive

Please go to F-Secure website (http://support.f-secure.com/ols3beta/start.html) to perform an online scan. Click on Start scanning at the bottom of the page.
You may be prompted to install an ActiveX before you are able to accept the License Agreement. If prompted, please install it. After installing, the Accept button will be available.
Click on Accept to accept the License Agreement.
Click on Custom Scan. Under Virus Scan Options, select the Scan whole system option.
Under Other Scan Options, select these options: Scan all files
Scan whole system for rootkits
Scan whole system for spyware
Scan inside archives
Use advanced heuristics Click Start.
It will start installing the scanner and virus definitions. Once the installation is done, it will start scanning automatically. This takes a while. Please be patient.
Click on I want decide item by item.
Under Actions, select None for all infections found.
Click Next.
Click on Show Report.
Please copy and paste this report in your next reply.
Click Finish.

Thanks peku006

Hello!

Do you still need help

It has been three days since my last post.

Do you still need help with this?
Do you need more time?
Are you having problems following my instructions?

Note: If after 48hrs you have not replied to this thread then it will have to be CLOSED!

Hi Peku006-

I need just a little more time. Over the weekend, I think a banner ad on a website tried to install another Trojan on my computer. I used system restore, but there may be some residual. I'm busy dealing with some personal items, and will post logs up for you to see. I think the invasion came from ads on Mediafire.com.

Sorry for this. I don't want to be a burden anymore. Thanks for your help and patience. I'll try to have something for you tomorrow.

Once again, thanks for all the help.

Bobby

Hey peku006-

Things appear to be working well, but I continue getting AVG warnings about items in C:\System Volume Information\restore. It looks like I still have somthing stuck in System Restore like in a previous post.

Let me know your thoughts. Here is a HijackThis scan I just ran. Thanks - Bobby.

Hi Bobby D
The scans are fine and it looks like your machine is clean :)

I continue getting AVG warnings about items in C:\System Volume Information\restore
Don't Worry.........
This will clear your System Volume Information restore points and remove all the infected files that were quarantined.........

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r301/DFW_photos/CF_Cleanup.png
When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Download it from here (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html). Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html)

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here (http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html)
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here (http://www.firetrust.com/en/products/sitehound)

Install MVPS Hosts File from here (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/)
F-secure Health Check (http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001356.html)

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?" (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)

Read some information here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html) how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing! :bigthumb:
