Hello,

I am concernced that my laptop may have a problem. It has tended to be slow on opening and recently, my hotmail account was used to send spam. I have changed the password on that account. I am adding a link to my original query back in August and a current HJT log. I will check this forum again within the next 48 hrs, sorry for the mucking around last time :red:
Thank you again for your assistance.

G'Day and welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

O17 - HKLM\Software\..\Telephony: DomainName = corp.westan.com.au <<< looks to be a company or corporate computer?

Note:
When the infected computer in question is a company machine in the workplace, and you are an employee.

The intention of this forum is not to replace a company's IT department, nor can we anticipate alterations or configurations that may have been made to a business machine, or how it will interact with the tools commonly used in the removal of malware.

More than one machine could be at stake, possibly even the server. If sensitive material has been compromised by an infection, the company could be held liable.

To prevent any possible loss or corruption of company information, please inform your IT department or Supervisor when a workplace computer has been infected, immediately.

Thanks for your understanding.

Hello,

yes this is now my personal notebook. I bought it 2nd hand from a friend who worked at that company when they did some upgrades. it was cleaned of all their stuff but does seem to still have its anti virus through the business. not sure how or why?! I have and it has no connection to westan anymore. Hope you can still help me.

Also can you please note that I am having trouble loading web pages in general. Even replying to this message has taken me over an hour because it 'crashed' 3 times ....make that 4 with the standard error message below:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

What you can try:

thanks in advance

G'Day Michelle, thanks for the feedback, unfortunately there are no clues in the HJT log. I will ask for information and then we will clean and remove what should not be there and see how it goes.

it was cleaned of all their stuff but does seem to still have its anti virus through the business. not sure how or why?! I have and it has no connection to westan anymore.
Do you mean: C:\Program Files\CA\eTrust EZ Armor\eTrust EZ Antivirus
Is this the old antivirus program, is it no longer valid and what are you running now, you must have a current, up to date antivirus program running?

I have and it has no connection to westan anymore.
Not sure if the old information has anything to do with the problem, we will remove it and see.

Understand though hidden malware can exist, it is not the only reason you can have issues like this. Please review and act on this information:
It's not always malware: How to fix the top 10 Internet Explorer issues
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/IEtopten.mspx

Are you using a router? If so, see this information:
Malware Silently Alters Wireless Router Settings
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2008/06/malware_silently_alters_wirele_1.html

Let's proceed with some cleaning and ask MBAM to take a look for us. Do this in the numbered order.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat <<< right click the link and choose "Save target as...
Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = corp.westan.com.au
O17 - HKLM\Software\..\Telephony: DomainName = corp.westan.com.au
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{084B6ED4-7E80-4EF2-9982-DE393E43C8F2}: NameServer = 202.124.76.98 202.124.76.66
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = corp.westan.com.au
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = corp.westan.com.au
O17 - HKLM\System\CS3\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = corp.westan.com.au

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

7) Post an uninstall list also:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Include any information you think will help.

Cheers...Phil

Good morning,

The antivirus I run which is current and regulary updated is CA internet security suite. the last scan was on the 11th October and the product is registered.

Followed your directions and below are the logs as requested.

When I did the scan only for HJT and checked the requsted item and 'fixed' I noticed that they have interesting returned on the log?!
I followed your directions and went to reopn the internet and was unable to do so. When I tried, a windows diagnstic for windows xp opened stating that, 'windows has detected the computer is part of a domain. If you are currently connected to a home provate network, click next to continue.'
Doing so, only gave me the option to check a wireless connection or ethernet connection, neither of which I run as I use my mobile as the modem through the usb. I shut down the laptop with the intention of reopening to the last restore point and getting back to you. I never opened in safe mode or went back but I got internet back and as mentioned , those checked items were back on the HJT log!

Here are the logs requested

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. I think you should get your Internet Service Provider involved, I do not want to do anything to cause you to use connectivity. They should be able to tell you how to reset those.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.

Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Acrobat and Reader 6.0.3 Update
Adobe Acrobat and Reader 6.0.4 Update
Adobe Acrobat and Reader 6.0.5 Update
Adobe Acrobat and Reader 6.0.6 Update
Adobe Reader 6.0 <<< out of date and being exploited, see this:

Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

LimeWire 4.18.1 <<< uninstall this and all other p2p programs.
File Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer. (P2P)

If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.

How is the computer running, any malware issues?

Thanks

hello again

I have removed the items and followed your suggestions.

Can you advise where/how I can remove the remenant of spyware doctor 5? when I try to remove this, the error message stating that C:\program files\spyware doctor\unins000.dat does not exist, cannot uninstall.

Opening the lap top still takes a short while, as it still sits at the windows opening screen for about 30 seconds. Is this too long or just part of the laptop reestablishing itself?

I belive the internet problem was with my ISP so I am not too concerned there at the moment.

I have included one more of each log for you to do a final check - :)

Thanks for returning your information, you asked about: spyware doctor 5
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Spyware+Doctor+5.0&btnG=Search
It is likely you wil have to reinstall the version to fix the uninstaller. Unless I am missing it, I don't see it in the HJT log? You can Search Companion to serch for it by name, then navigate to any files found and delete them.

I am not really seeing any malware in the HJT log, I do see the old 017 items from corp.westan.com.au and I believe you should ask your ISP for help resetting those so we don't lose your connection.

I do see this: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Uniblue RegistryBooster 2] C:\Program Files\Uniblue\RegistryBooster 2\RegistryBooster.exe /S
It may not be malware, but please read this information:

Uninstall list:
Java(TM) 6 Update 7 <<< always remove the old versions when you update. I am not happy with Java software, but they are what is available.

As I said earlier, I just do not know what programs you need, you have to make that decision. I also see PSI running, it is handy not to think about software updates, but I suggest you turn it off in MSConfig and run it manually once a month at Windows Update time would work.

As far as overall performance, these links should help with that. Malware can sometimes mess up a computer so bad that even though it is removed and reinstallation or repair of the Operation System is needed, and at times even a reformat.

Update and run your security programs and if all is well, let me know and I will close this topic.
