Hello. I am writing this from my laptop given by my school. The startup is really slow as well as opening Firefox for the first time after startup.

Here is my HJT log:

hi,

i dont recognize any malware in the hjt log, but that dosnt mean its not there or that it is the cause for the 'slowness' you could do a online scan as another check: (most commercial computers are loaded with bloatware)

ESET online scanner:

http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

uses Internet Explorer only
check "YES" to accept terms
click start button
allow the ActiveX component to install
click the start button. the Scanner will update.
check both "Remove found threats" and "Scan unwanted applications"
click scan
when done you can find the scan log at:C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
please copy/paste that log in next reply.

Hello. Alright, I will get to that tomorrow (hopefully) but because my laptop works on McAfee, should I disable it when I do the scan? Also, because the school gave out these laptops, I'm not sure if I have 100% control over the McAfee AV.

hi,

no need to disable the Mcafee antivirus for the online scan.

hi,

the scan looks ok. Commercial computers these days come with loads of bloatware pre-installed on them. If the computer isnt your personal property theres not much you can do about it. maybe exchange it for another?

Thanks. I'll either ask my school to reformat it or I'll just look for a new laptop - don't really like this one anyways :p:

Hi. I would like to ask something. It's a mysterious story but bear with me please! About 2 months ago, after my sister used a clean flash drive in school, it was apparently affected. I didn't know this until when I plugged it into my [school] laptop. Mcafee caught a detection when I put my flash drive in but I'm not sure if it caught it all (whatever the virus wanted to do). I quickly did a scan, etc and nothing was found. I formatted that USB flash drive and never used it ever again. I had used the tutorial given by bleepingcomputer about disabling autorun (the flashdisinfector), so when I put in my flash drive, it doesn't automatically run. In otherwords, there is no "autoplay" when I put in my flash drive now.

Afterwards, thinking it would be fine, I used a different flash drive to transfer some files from my laptop to a school computer. The school computer (which also uses Mcafee) catches a virus called m.exe was attempting to run and I'm unable to open the flash drive through the school computer. So out of curiosity, I put the flash drive into my laptop. Of course it doesn't run because I had supposedly disabled the autorun/autoplay feature, so there seems to be no detections. However, when I double click the flash drive through My Computer, some windows error pops up (with the red circle and white X) saying something about Win32 and not being able to open it. So I right click and open the flash drive through that method. And, what do I see? Two new files that never existed in the pen drive before: autorun.inf and m.exe. So I'm wondering which computer is infected: my laptop or the school computer. My friends seem to have no problems when they put in USB drives into the school computers. Although, I just might be picking on the infected computers only.

I have scanned with Mcafee, Spybot, Adaware, and Malwarebytes' Antimalware, which all say I'm clean. Please help me solve this mystery. Thanks!

hi,

sorry for the delay. hard to say about the flash drives. your computer appears to be malware free. no telling what sorts of malware somebody might have on there home computer, and then "pass" it around with there flash drives. from your log and scans you look ok if thats your laptop.

Personally I wouldn't trust any public computer to be malware free.

if all is good, heres some info for you:

Reducing Your Risk
The Short Version:

1) Keep your OS (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us),(Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other Software (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/) up to date to "patch" vulnerabilities.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons.
3) Install and keep them all updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications. If not updated they will soon be worthless.
4) Refrain from clicking on links or attachments you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message may seem. Are you sure of the source that sent them?
5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites requesting that you install software to your computer. Do you trust the website?
6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer.
7) Set up and use limited accounts for everyday use, rather than administrator accounts.
8) Install a third party software firewall.
9) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client.
10) If your habits include: warez, cracks or p2p file sharing then you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source?
