I am having trouble getting rid of a virus on my computer. It is called smitfraud-c.coreservices and also under c:\windows\system32. I think i have been able to delete most of the files but none of my virus programs seem to be able to delete c:\windows\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk.

The program was bringing up messages saying that i needed to download a virus program and that someone was trying to break into my computer (they greatly resembled the real windows). Those pop ups have stopped but i know that the one file has not been deleted. I am also having internet explorer pop-ups now and i dont even use explorer, i use mozilla.

I was reading in the forum someone else who had the same problems so i followed the advice on that one but it didnt work for me. So here is my combofix log.

I also ran my spybot and it found this:

Company:
Product: Smitfraud-C.CoreService
Threat: Trojan

Functionality
Supposed to be some kind of driver

Description
This trojan horse gets installed as a driver and constantly runs in background and connects to malicious servers without any user consent. Removal may require to manually close the file handles of the core.cahce.dsk and core.sys residing in the folder \windows\system32\drivers\. To receive help on this please contact Team Spybot S&D via forums or email.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

Posting additional comments or logs before a volunteer responds, can push you back instead of forward, because your thread ends up with a newer date. Also, helpers may think you are already being assisted because of the post count.

ComboFix is not a general purpose cleaning tool, please do not use this tool without supervision.

File Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer. (P2P)

If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.
LimeWire <<< uninstall all p2p program on the computer.

How about if you read the directions and post the required HijackThis log and I will be glad to take a look.

Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Thanks

Before I proceed, I run AVG 8 free, is this AVG7 that you are running a paid version or is it just out of date?

Carruthers9
2008-11-14, 00:03
I run the AVG free edition. (program version 7.5.549) It doesn't say AVG 8 anywhere but it is the free edition.

I am sure you will find that version is expired and I will post the information to update to AVG 8 free as soon as we clean this malware, I am helping a lot of folks, so please make sure I do this. Make sure you follow these instructions in the numbered order.

1) File Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer. (P2P)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282

If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.
Ares, LimeWire <<< uninstall these programs and any other p2p programs installed on the computer.

2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

3) http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat <<< right click the link and choose "Save target as...
Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Driver::
uagp355

File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\uagp355.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk
E:\setup.exe

Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{c498abd2-0858-11da-8053-806d6172696f}]

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

http://www.f-secure.com/sw-desc/look2me.shtml <<< see this

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

8) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM, the uninstall list and a new HJT log ran after the other tools.

9) Post also an uninstall log:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thanks

I did everything you asked as best i could there were only a few areas that i had concerns about:

1. when combofix started it said there was an update but it was unable to download it

2. the following boxes you asked me to check were not an option in HJT:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [SpybotDeletingA9267] command /c del "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk"
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [SpybotDeletingC2561] cmd /c del "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk"
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [SpybotDeletingB3027] command /c del "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk"
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [SpybotDeletingD6115] cmd /c del "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk"

3. malwarebytes was unable to delete one of the problems it found:

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, let's look at the uninstall list first.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.

Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested: https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Acrobat 7.0.2 and Reader 7.0.2 Update
Adobe Acrobat 7.0.3 and Reader 7.0.3 Update
Adobe Reader 7.0 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this information:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10081618-83.html?tag=nl.e433
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/

AVG 7.5 <<< out of date, will address this soon, the new program will remove this old one.

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2 <<< out of date, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Be aware of this information so you can opt out of anything you do not want.
Microsoft Does MSN Toolbar Distribution Deal With Java:
http://searchengineland.com/microsoft-does-msn-toolbar-distribution-deal-with-java-15413.php

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 <<< uninstall this old version

Do you own these programs? If not, once the trial is over, there is rarely any benefit to keeping them running and using resources?
C:\Program Files\a-squared Anti-Dialer\a2service.exe
C:\Program Files\a-squared Free\a2service.exe

How is the computer running now? If there are no issues, before we remove combofix, let's install AVG 8.

http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition (AVG Free)
This tutorial will save you some resources if you wish to use it:
How to Install Free version AVG 8.0 without LinkScanner feature
http://russelltexas.com/tutorials/avg8install.htm

Good AVG information:
FAQ: http://www.avg.com/faq
AVG Free Forum: http://freeforum.avg.com/

Once AVG is Installed:
*Right click the icon for AVG in System Tray and choose Open AVG User Interface.

*Click on Update now, allow AVG to download and install any new updates.

*Click on Computer Scanner then choose "Scan whole computer", this takes a round one hour on the computer I am using now.

*Near the bottom above the words "The scan is complete" choose "Export overview to file"

*Choose Desktop and give it a name you will recognize like AVG Scan Results, then choose SAVE.

*Close results and close the Interface.

*Copy and paste the contents of that file if I request it or you have something you think I should see.

*** post the scan results only if you think I need to see them.

How is this computer running now?

Thanks

No, you did exactly the right thing, each tool is only as good as it's database and every scanner is likely to find things another scanner did not.

Warnings: I hope you deleted or quarantined those? They are all cookies but not needed on your computer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie <<< see this

This information will show you how to control those cookies, that wil be placed back on your computer if you visit those sites again.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/privacy/config.mspx

This information is available for Firefox also.

Infections:
C:\sydp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ert\LKM45B0.exe

Navigate to the Virus Vault and delete those:
http://www.avg.com/faq.num-766#faq_766
Look here: 773:I have some files in the AVG Virus Vault. What next?

Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to respond, you said:

AVG found the system_volume thing one more time but i deleted it .
System Restore files are protected, we will clean those during the next steps

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If your scans are all coming back clean, I will leave you with this information.
