Hi there,
I'm not sure how I got this infection, but randomly about two days about other websites started popping up in my browser (in firefox), one being microsoft live care, click tracker advertising, match sites, etc. I ran AVG in safe mode and it found that my winlogon.exe file is infected with the trojan horse SHeur2.AOX. There were also a lot of cookie trackers, but Spyware Doctor took care of that. Below is my hijackthis log I read about in the "read before posting" section...if there is something else I needed to do and missed, please let me know how I can help.
I really appreciate it....I haven't had this happen before and I'm afraid of what this thing is doing in the background!!!

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

1 - Scan With ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
2 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad
3 - Status Check

I am getting two rundll errors now when my computer restarts. They are windows\system32\verabija.dll
and windows\system32\pulumide.dll specified module could not be found.
Nothing to worry about those.....they are away
1 - Remove bad HijackThis entries
Run HijackThis

Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
3 - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) and save it to your desktop.

Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/database/mbam-rules.exe) and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
Make sure the "Perform full scan" option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.
If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
4 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad
5 - Status Check
Please reply with
1. the ComboFix log(C:\ComboFix.txt)
2. the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log
3. a fresh HijackThis log

I am trying to follow your directions, but my computer is going extremely slow now. I am writing you from another computer. When I click to open any program, such as Hijack This, there is at least a 5-10 min delay before anything even begins to show up. I can not open the task manager (task bar says it is open, but it does not show on the screen) and because of the delay I can not restart without just manually shutting it down. I am continuing to just leave it open and let it work, but do you have any suggestions of something else I should do, perhaps working in safemode, etc? I will not try anything like that until I hear from you, and I will continue trying to follow your earlier instructions.

To load the last known good configuration:
If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
(If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.)
Use your arrow keys to move to "Last Known Good Configuration" and press your Enter key.

Sorry for all the posts, but with the time between my posts and your posts, I figured I should give you as much information as possible as I get it.
I can't open any programs now. I can't start the internet, I cant add or remove programs, HijackThis, etc. I'm a little concerned because the problem is now much worse than when we started....hope we can fix this!
Hijack This will run in safemode, but it doesn't accomplish anything. I tried going to the most recent point as you advised, but that didn't help at all. The problem with the slowness is gone, for example I can open my control panel, but then i can't open anything within the control panel.
Basically, I turn my laptop on, and the AVG threat warnings start popping up. If I try to open HijackThis while AVG is still running, the warnings keep coming up for the verabija.dll. Once I turn off AVG, and double click Hijack This or right click and try open, I get the sandtimer for a moment, and then nothing happens. This is the same thing for everything else--internet, etc.

Let´s try this
Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
Click the button next to "Restore my computer to an earlier time" and click the "Next" button.
A calendar will appear. Click on the date that you wish to restore Windows to. The box next to the calendar will show you the available restore points from that day. The ones marked "System Checkpoint" are the automatic ones that Windows XP created.
Choose the one you want, then click "Next". Don't pick a point too far back in the past,maybe one just before you started having problems -- remember, any programs you installed since your restoration point may not work anymore,so you may have to reinstall them.
Reboot your PC.

Same thing....I get to system restore, click it, and after a while it will start to come up, but it will not respond...all the while, my Resident Shield Alert keeps popping up to give me a multiple threat warning...They are all named generic12.LAE in the verabija.dll file. When I look at the "more details" section, I see \Restore\rstrui.exe multiple times, and then one file that has a ? before the C: and then ends in WBEM\MIADAF.EXE.
Is there a time that we can arrange to both be on this forum for a little while so that we don't have to wait as long between posts, just to have me say "no it wont work"? Since my laptop is all of a sudden being very uncooperative :( Or do I just need to take it somewhere? Just let me know, not 100% what your rules about that are here :) thanks.

I uninstalled AVG in safe mode...I really apologize since you didn't prompt me to do this, but now I am able to complete the scanning that you suggested with removing the hijackthis files and downloading malwarebytes and running it...i will post the results when i get them.

3 - Kaspersky Online Scan
Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.
Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

There was nothing in the Kaspersky scan!
below is my hijack log. The computer seems to be running fine..haven't had any pop ups the whole time the computer was scanning in Kaspersky, and once I got rid of AVG my computer was running at a normal speed again and opening all the programs.
If this is cleared up, can you give me some advice as to what I should install/buy for my computer to prevent this happening again? Thanks!

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

I installed Avast! and one of the firewalls. So once I have the firewall installed and ready to go, I should turn off my XP firewall so that they aren't both running, correct?
below is my hijack log. I am not experiencing any issues with my PC any longer...I do have one question: during the time that the viruses were on my computer, my battery wouldn't charge so my laptop would only run when on AC power, it would immediately turn off if disconnected. Now, my battery is charging and able to run with out AC power connected. Could that weird behavior have been a result of the viruses?

Update Java
Please download JavaRa (http://prm753.bchea.org/click/click.php?id=9) and unzip it to your desktop.
Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
Click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a log file has been produced. Click OK.
A log file will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
Click on Continue.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

The scans are fine and it looks like your machine is clean :)
Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
Turn off System Restore
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.
