View Full Version : Infected: Pausing, Lagging & Keystroke Skipping; IE Crashes... Need help

Hi,

I'm having problems with my system and I could use some assistance. I noticed several days ago that I was lagging & skipping and on occasion my IE crashes, primarily when I try to open it. My mouse basically sticks/pauses momentarily then it skips to where I moved it before the delay and the same is true for scrolling. In addition, when typing, all too often some keystrokes get skipped, as if they have not been pressed, while other times I am sticking/pausing then the last keystroke is repeated about 18 times. It's driving me crazy!!

I have run a number of applications including Ad-Aware 2008, Spyware Terminator, Trend Micro House Call, Norton Security Scan, an old version of Pest Patrol, Kaspersky Online Scanner (found nothing) and Panda free version (but that version only identifies the problems, it does not resolve the issues).

Other than Kaspersky Online Scanner, when running the above apps, they continually return multiple tracking cookies, despite repeatedly being deleted. The following is the latest Ad-Aware 2008 results:

There is no evidence of any infection present.
Cookies will be replaced every time you visit the site that created them.
You mention that you used Panda, did it find anything (other than cookies) ?

As I recall, no, that was it, just cookies.

I didn't see anything either, that's why I asked for help, but something has to be going on because of the issues that I'm having. I'm wondering if perhaps a conflict may be causing the problem, but it's acting more like malware is running in the background. In any event, it is driving me crazy!!

I'm going to check on possible conflicts, but do you have any suggestions? BTW... Thank you very much for your help!!

The only thing in your log that I would say remove is Crawler Toolbar, it's not malware as such but I wouldn't have it on my machine.

The only other thing we can do is check for a rootkit, it's extremely unlikely that there is one but let's make sure.

Please Download GMER to your desktop

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip) and extract it to your desktop.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan. Click Yes.

Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
Click OK.

GMER will produce a log. Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked. Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log.
Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

Please post the results from the GMER scan in your reply.

Hi! Sorry for the few days delay, I was out of town.

Anyway... I actually installed the Crawler Toolbar as a result of this problem (after it started), but had already uninstalled it after you posted that you found no evidence of infection present. In fact, I went through and uninstalled all apps that I did not need or wondered if they could be causing a conflict (to no avail).

Next, re GMER:
I am not familiar with this app or the some of your directions, but there are a couple issues with it. To begin with, when launching the app, I initally get the following error:

System\CurrentControlSet\Services\gmer: The handle is invalid.

After clicking OK, the app only opens with the Rootkit/Malware tab and the > > > tab. Only 3 boxes are checked, Services, Registry and Files. All others are grayed. The drive (c:\) is preselected so I click scan.

Scan results:

GMER hasn't found any system modification.

After clicking OK, no report is produced.

Please let me know if I have missed anything or if you have any other ideas. Despite the fact that we cannot seem to figure out why the system is behaving the way it is, it continues to lag and skip. It is so annoying and it is really driving me crazy!!

Thank you!!
Gigi

The Gmer issues are probably due to you having a 64 bit system.
Given all the scans you have run, I very much doubt that this is a malware problem.

Unfortunately you are now outside my area of knowledge, so I'm going to have to recommend that you visit one of the tech forums for assistance.

http://www.techsupportforum.com/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/
http://forums.whatthetech.com/forums.html

All the forums above have good support for software/OS problems, and I'm sure they will be able to help.

When you start your thread, explain what the problem is and let them know that you have been checked for malware.

Since this issue appears to be resolved ... this Topic has been closed. Glad I could help.

Note:If it has been five days or more since your last post, and the helper assisting you posted a response to that post to which you did not reply, your topic will not be reopened. At that point, if you still require help, please start a new topic and include a fresh HijackThis log and a link to your previous thread.

If it has been less than five days since your last response and you need the thread re-opened, please send me or MOD a private message (pm). A valid, working link to the closed topic is required.
