Hey guys.
Started having problems a few days ago with Windows Automatic Updates being turned off and unresponsive to attempts at being turned back on. Being pretty sure there was a virus, bug, or other nasty I tried for a restore point to discover there were none. After some web surfing your program was reccomended and it found Virtumonde in a couple variations on my system; removal attempts have been less than successful. I'm also pretty sure I have a keylogger of some sort. In short I'm looking for a saving grace so that I don't have to do a format and fresh install.

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

Not much showing in the HJT log, hackers are hiding the junk from it. Let's start like this.
1) Post an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

No, I run the free version. I went to thier site when I noticed the announcement of version 8 on my AVG interface and only found the link to download the paid version of 8. Do you have a link handy that goes straight to the AVG8 free download page?
Side note: MBAM is performing its scan now.

Once installed:
1) Right click the icon for AVG in System Tray and choose Open AVG User Interface.
2) Click on Update now, allow AVG to download and install any new updates.
3) Click on Computer Scanner then choose "Scan whole computer", this takes a round one hour on the computer I am using now.
4) Near the bottom above the words "The scan is complete" choose "Export overview to file"
5) Choose Desktop and give it a name you will recognize like AVG Scan Results, then choose SAVE.
6) Close results and close the Interface.
7) Copy and paste the contents of that file if I request it or you have something you think I should see.

2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.

Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested: https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

I will post the information you requested when we are closing, before I move to clean the HJT log, I would like to see a new HJT log after AVG has been updated and run. Please also provide feedback about how the computrr is performing at that point.

Update on progress: I was able to turn Windows Automatic Updates back on after the most recent restart. The last couple restarts (during the add/remove and update process) were extremely sluggish. What nornally takes a matter of seconds to load the desktop took perhaps 2 minutes. That wasn't totally unexpected after several changes were made.
New uninstall list for your inspection to verify that I got all the stuff that was mentioned.
Side note: AVG8 fully updated (thanks for that walkthrough) and in the scan process now. Will update with it's report and a fresh HJT log.

Not sure why a couple entries had doubles (such as acrobat.com and adobe air). I only noticed it after I made the last post. I double checked the windows add/remove list they were not listed twice there and did a second check on the list in HJT and it turned up a double listing again.

Let's do a little cleaning:
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

From all I can tell now everything is clean AVG and SB-S&D came up with a clean report. I did stop a couple "on start-up" processes and as I have time will be able to research and perhaps shut down even more of them thanks to your help. I have restarted a few times and start up is still a bit sluggish but I expect that may improve with a little more time. I've not done a large amount of websurfing but so far I've had no unprompted pop-ups so I think that issue is resolved as well. As I posted earlier I was able to turn windows updates back on (also got a few new updates from microsoft). The "keylogger" issue I mentioned to begin with I believe was just a part of the unsolicited pop-ups.
At the risk of being premature, whats left is to get a list of trusted freeware and instructions (if needed) on how best to use it in my pc health routines.
