View Full Version : ridiculously slow

I'm using version 1.5 and the sig count after the last update was 343,000+.
It took over an hour to get to 136,000 before I cancelled the scan.
Is this normal? The program used to be fast, and I can see it taking more time as updates are added, but this is ridiculous.
Thanks for any help.....

You're using a dated version of Spybot-Search&Destroy. The latest version if 1.6.0.30. Download and upgrade from:

Nice to see a fast reply.
But what warranty is there that S&Dv1.6 runs fast and is not cripled as in July?
I had to revert to S&D v1.52,
see here: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?p=236261#post236261

until the last update on Friday Nov.7th, when a large immunization base was applied, my scans never took more than 40-45min, however after the update I got the following:
PC with XP SP2, single core 2.39Ghz RAM 1Gb - 95min
PC with XP SP2, dual core 2.7Ghz RAM 4Gb - more than 4 hours, no joke here!

When I last ran Spybot a fortnight ago, the scan took 35mins:eek: which is a darn sight better than the 50+ mins 1.5.2 used to take:laugh:!

My PC has Vista SP1, 1GB Ram and an Intel Dual Core 1.60 Ghz processor.

No warranty but the facts are:
The Spyware scan count has doubled since July, elongating the scan times for everyone:
2008-07-02 » 170305
2008-11-12 » 340602
Spybot 1.6 scans faster than Spybot 1.5.
Thanks to DougCuk (http://forums.spybot.info/member.php?u=184)'s perseverance in discovering that an excessive amount of stored cookies cause a slowdown in Windows Explorer and/or Internet Explorer with the original Spybot 1.6 SDHelper active. That problem has been resolved with a new SDHelper that has been available via the intergraded update process since 2008-09-24.
Other than upgrading to Spybot 1.6, I see no solution to your complaint. If you find that Spybot 1.6 is still unacceptable you can always revert back to Spybot 1.5 again as you did originally.

Wow, very funny.
Thank you for your valuable contribution.

A PC is a tool for work, I do not consider time spend for maintenance lost, but if products force reverting to a previous version, as it was with S&D, and considering the time looking for knowledgeable support, I rather revert to a Mac.
The most important for me is the fact that I kind of don’t trust S&D anymore.

Thank you for taking time to reply,
I see no other way but to upgrade to v1.6, v1.52 really messed things after last Friday.

I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this question or not. I have been having the same problem starting within the last week or two, and I also noticed a sizeable increase in the count. But, I am wondering if Spybot 1.6 is compatible with Windows XP_sp3? I haven't installed Service Pack 3 yet, but was just getting ready to do so. Any known issues here?

ronald, the scan counts increase with each update. This is because more detections are being added and updated in the database. Spybot-Search&Destroy 1.6 tries to give you the fastest scanning time.
Spybot-SD 1.6 is fully compatible with Windows XP Home/Professional Edition SP3.

user, I really don't know how the scan times may take so long. On my XP a decent 15-20 minutes is enough. But there are so many variables (number of files, processes, etc.). If you plan to revert to 1.5.2.20, I would suggest you stick with 1.6.0.30. I mean like if there is a time difference between the scans of the two versions.

The least I can suggest is clear the temp. files, cache from browsers, cookies, and defragment your drive. I can't promise it might help. But it would be great, even if it was the tiniest bit.
