View Full Version : Trojan Infection

A couple days ago, when I started my computer I realized that it was running much slower than normal. I scanned my computer with Ad-Aware, and it found Win32.trojandownloader.agent, so I removed it. Spyware S&D, however, would not even open, so I couldn't run a scan with it. Later, after restarting my computer, when Windows was loading after logging in, explorer.exe would not run unless I opened the taskmanager and manually ran it, at which point the start menu and desktop would appear as normal. However, my computer was slower yet, and, of course, when I ran a scan again, the trojan was back. I searched online at how to remove it (I hadn't found this forum yet), and one thing I found suggested starting with a system restore. After doing so, however, I suddenly had no internet connection anymore (I'm currently using a school computer). Good news, though, Spybot worked again! Ad-Aware, when it scanned, found nothing, but Spybot found CN.wAQdN, which it linked to Isass.exe (I'm assuming it starts with an I, not an L). Of course, this yet again returns upon restart. Is it possible that this file a few weeks back led to the infection of the Win32 trojan? (Sorry for such a long description, but I figured you should know everything that's happened).

Help would be GREATLY appreciated. As for now, I'm going to generally keep off my computer to prevent making it worse.

Hi

BEFORE you POST
(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

It's not advisable combine fixes given in other topics and use them by one's own.

Download and install TrendMicro HijackThis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe)
* Once installed open HijackThis by clicking Start > Programs > HijackThis and click the button labeled
Do a system scan only

* Click the scan button in the lower left hand corner of the interface and HijackThis will quickly scan your system.
* Once the scan is complete the scan button will now read save log. Click this button to save the log file to your PC. Once you select where you would like to save the file it will open in your systems default text editor. Typically this application is Notepad. Post the log here.

In the guide for ComboFix, it says that I should install the "Windows Recovery Console," and that for Windows Vista I do so using my Windows DVD. However, I wasn't sent a windows DVD with the computer, merely the OS itself, and I had been wondering if that would eventually be a problem. What should I do about that?

Hi

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

DNA Bittorrent
Bittorrent

I'd like you to read the this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282).

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Delete these folders afterwards:

c:\program files\DNA
c:\program files\BitTorrent

Empty Recycle Bin.

After that:

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\1614091370
C:\khq
G:\tcsmgm.exe

Folder:
c:\program files\DNA
c:\program files\BitTorrent

Registry::

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one here (http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm).

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) as instructed in the screenshot here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif).

Post back its report, a fresh hjt log and above mentioned ComboFix resultant log.

I had actually already uninstalled BitTorrent, I just didn't realize that I needed to uninstall the DNA thing, as well. I uninstalled the DNA, and then went to delete the folders and found neither.

Unfortunately, last night my internet somehow suddenly reconnected, and whatever is on the computer promptly downloaded whatever other trojans it wanted, and a whole bunch of errors started popping up. So I restarted the computer, flipping the wireless switch so that it can't reconnect to the internet until it's clean again. In other words, I'm assuming that there's a bunch of new stuff on the computer. Should I continue with the same thing, or should I go back to the beginning, or what?

Hi

Carry on with the instructions. We'll remove possible new bad items after that if any exists :)

Whenever I try to use ComboFix now, it immediately says "ComboFix.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly." etc. This is exactly what used to happen, and, now that it's connected to the internet, happens again with Spybot S&D.

Hi

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Please post contents of that file & a fresh hjt log in your next reply.

The same error shows up when I try to install Malwarebytes.

I don't know if you still need a new HJT log, but I got one anyway.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)

However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Well, like I said, I flipped the switch for my wireless connection when it first connected the other night, and I haven't let it reconnect since then, so it was only online a maximum of 3-5 minutes. I've already backed up all my important files a week or so ago, and I don't do any financial transactions or banking or anything using the computer, so there should be no risk of that. Reformatting and re-installing would certainly be ideal, and is what I want to do, but unfortunately, as I said in an earlier post, I wasn't sent an installation disc with my computer, merely the OS itself, so unless you know a way around that, it is quite impossible. So that means that yes, I would like help in cleaning it, if possible.

Hi

Hard to do anything if you don't have OS media. I still find it a bit odd since usually there's at least some kind of system restore media delivered with the computer.

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip) and save it your desktop:
Extract it to your desktop and double-click GMER.exe
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log in your reply.

Okay, GMER is giving the exact same error as Spybot, ComboFix and Malwarebytes.

They did send me some sort of restore, or recovery disc or something, but I figured that it was just for restoring your current installation, and that you can't reinstall windows using it. I would have checked it to see, but unfortunately I've left it at home, so I don't currently have it with me. However, I'll be going home Tuesday night (I suppose if you're in Finland, it'd be Wednesday morning), so I could check it at that point. Is it possible that a simple restore CD would be able to reinstall windows? I had figured it wouldn't be able to, but I could easily be wrong.

Blade81
2008-11-21, 17:30
Hi

I believe that recovery media should work. Your system has probably hidden restore partition which recovery media will use to restore your system back to the original state.

Keep me updated :)

So even though I wouldn't actually be reformatting and reinstalling windows, it should still work completely? There wouldn't be a chance of the infection somehow staying on the harddrive?

Hi

Yes, should be safe and it's kind of reinstalling since it restores the system state back to the original one.
