Hey guys..... First off I really appreciate having this service available. Background about the situation: Running Windows Vista HP laptop... We surf a lot, and use Office, that is about it. I run ClamWin, Spybot, Avast. The last two days our laptop has been locking up every 30 minutes. It started when I hooked up our USB external hard drives and started moving files over to back them up (pictures, videos, documents, etc). Massive movings, like 35GB worth total.... I thought it may be the drives, but it is still doing it. I thought it might be heat from using the laptop on my lap on a blanket, but it does it on the kitchen table... I thought it might be Vista.... Finally I decided to run Avast but I could not open the program, it said files were not in their location yada-yada..... I just redownloaded Avast. It was weird because the Avast taskbar icon was still in place and revolving as if it were working. Finally I thought I may just have some bad stuff, so I came here... :):):) Thanks again! James

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
Please Read All Instructions Carefully
If you don't understand something, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
Please do not run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you
Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

If you can do those few things, everything should go smoothly http://www.countingcows.de/laechel.gif

Please Note, your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use.
Be assured, any links I give are safe
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AntiVirus
You say you have ClamWin and Avast
First you should know that you're actually doing more harm than good by running more than one Anti Virus program.
When you do this the programs compete for resources, and the end result is none does it's best and can cause system instability.
I recommend that you choose one that you want to keep.
The other/s I would either uninstall, or disable from startup and use as "on demand" for an occasional scan.

Download and Run RSIT

Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open:

log.txt will be opened maximized.
info.txt will be opened minimized.

Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

Okay, I ran the utility, first stopping Avast, and exiting ClamWin. I was under the impression Avast was a constant watchdog and ClamWin was Scan on Demand…. Is that true? If not, which would you recommend to me and why? I am using these because I hate paid subscriptions, and these are consistently recommended by shareware/antivirus articles. 

FYI I looked up Avast and ClamWin... Clam is on demand, Avast is resident.

I just tried running Avast's scan on demand, it locked my computer up twice at Program Files/EA Sports/Sport/Support..... etc...

Spore is a computer game I have installed for the kids. The antivirus will NOT continue past this folder for some reason.....

FYI #2 I have the Links toolbar displayed with a few of my favorite websites on it as buttons. A few of them are USAA, Email, and Craigslist. Yesterday the icons suddenly changed on these buttons, the little icon on the button... For instance Craigslist usually displays a peace sign, yesterday it was different, along with the others. Today they are back to normal...

Not trying to overwhelm you, simply trying to provide every detail of what I am experiencing.... :)

Information

ClamWin is "On Demand", but you have it running at startup and to be honest, if you have Avast then you don't need it.

There is no obvious sign of malware, the problem with Avast may just be the size of the file
----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------

Step 1

Remove Programs

Older versions of some programs have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Now click Start---Control Panel. Double click Add or Remove Programs (XP) / Programs and Features (Vista) . If any of the following programs are listed there,
click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove.

Adobe Reader 8.1.2 Please see below for updating Adobe
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

Now close the Control Panel.

----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------
Step 2

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------
Step 3

Kaspersky Online Scanner .
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
NOTE:- This scan is best done from IE (Internet Explorer)
NOTE:- Vista users should start IE by Start(Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click Run As Admin
Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Once the database has downloaded, click My Computer in the left pane
Now go and put the kettle on !
When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review: Close any open programs.
Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------
Step 4

Logs/Information to Post in Reply
Please post the following logs/Information in your reply

MalwareBytes Log
Kaspersky Log
How are things running now ?

----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------

Additional Notes

Your Adobe Acrobat Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Adobe Reader is a large program and uses unnecessary space.
If you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php << Recommended

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available.

Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)
Click Download
On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
Click the Continue button
Click Run, and click Run again
Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

When the installation is complete go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.

Hey.... Just wanted to give a quick update:

Step 1 Complete
Step 2 Halted at: C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\SPORE\Support\EA Help\Fi\Updating_Your_Sound_Driver.htm
This "halt" locked the computer up, just as it did when running Avast's scan. I had to disconnect from AC power and remove the battery to restart the computer.
Step 3 Not yet attempted
Step 4 Not yet attempted
Additional Notes Completing Now

#1 Do you think I should uninstall my Spore game for the time being?
#2 How can I remove some of these programs from startup that are no longer needed? I would like to keep ClamWin, but as you said I don't need it to begin at startup, only on demand. I notice there are other items in startup that I have uninstalled, like Mcafee's siteadvisor toolbar (long gone).

Thank you so much for the help so far!!! James

#1 if you don't mind removing it, then try deleting the Updating_Your_Sound_Driver.htm file first and see if that helps.

#2 we can get to that when things are running properly :)

Hey... FYI, I tried deleting the update file, and it halted on another Spore file. I am going to uninstall the program, but we are going on vacation until December 1st, so please excuse me if I do not login for awhile. I will resume troubleshooting with you when we return. Thank you for your help so far! James
