another virtumonde problem

Hi.

I ran Spybot yesterday and it showed a virtumonde infection. I removed it, but further scans show that it's still there. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

Note: In notepad under Format, uncheck "Word Wrap" Produce all HJT logs like this, single spaced.

Then post and uninstall list:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

:oops: Sorry about the double-spaced log... the extra EOL characters got me when I posted the win file from my bsd box.

In the interest of full disclosure, since you asked for a new log file, I took the opportunity to run ComboFix. I was hoping to lessen the amount of time you have to invest in this problem. I understand that, from this point, I should only perform exactly the tasks you instruct me to. I hope you can continue to help...

Here's the list of operations I performed and the order:

1. Ran ComboFix through to completion.
2. Rebooted.
3. Scanned with Spybot S & D -- no problems found.
4. Rebooted.
5. Saved a HJT log.
6. Saved the uninstall list from HJT

So now my question is -- is the pc really clean?

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, you asked:

I do have concerns about some of the items in the Uninstall list. The "RON Tool Netupbanner", "Advertisement Service", and "Otto" items look like spyware based on my limited research. Should I uninstall them normally or is there a special tool?
They look suspicious to me also, since they are on that list, the safest way is to uninstall them in Add Remove programs. Let me know if you have any problems.

Now proceed like this:

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.

Update the antivirus and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.
If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.

Thanks again for your continued help. It is very much appreciated.

Things mostly went well. Here's what I did:

1. Removed "RON Tool Netupbanner" via Add/Remove Programs. No troubles.

2. Removed "Otto" via Add/Remove Programs. It seemed to run something and I had to enter a "confirmation code". After that it seemed to be gone.

3. Removed "Advertisement Service". It gave me an error: "An error occurred while trying to remove Advertisement Service. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove Advertisement Service from the Add or Remove programs list?" I chose "No".

4. Disabled system restore

5. Rebooted

6. Enabled system restore

7. Ran "combofix /u".

8. Ran a full system scan with freshly updated MBAM --> Clean!

9. Ran a full system scan with freshly updated virus scanner --> Found 1 new :( (the other 3 were already in quarantine from a previous scan...)

Thanks for the feedback Jeff. I am not familiar with the ClamWin log, but it looks like it does not like:
CYGWIN which appears to be a valid program:

So you may want to instruct ClamWin to ignore those files so it does not remove something to cause to program not to work.
I see stuff also in ClamWin guarantine, you want to clean those. I personally leave anything my AV removes in quarantine for a few days to make sure a mistake was not made.
I will guess that the "Permission denied" code is areas ClanWin has no access.

Check for the file in red and delete it if there:
