View Full Version : Computer appears to have multiple infections

Hi,

I'll start by mentioning that I have another open thread at the moment, however it is for a completely different computer then the one I need help for in this thread.

My problem is when I run Malwarebytes it does detect a trojan, however after Malwarebytes takes care of it, a new one instantly appears. The trojan always seems to be in the path C:\System Volume Information\_restore and every time a new one pops up it is some different number after the word restore. I've pasted the Malwarebytes log. I also did a complete scan with AVG that found 4 infections and 2 cases of spyware, so it seems that Malwarebytes did not detect these. This has me worried that there may be many infections on my computer that the two programs are not detecting. I didn't include the AVG log because I'm not sure how to get the log into text format.

Hopefully one of you guys will be able to help me. Pasted below are a couple of logs:

Hello Up2NoGood

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.
It is advisable that you back up your personal data before starting any clean up procedure.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.stockhouse.com/tools/?pag...s.asp?metal=HG (obfuscated)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5E8FA924-DEF0-4E71-8A82-A11CA0C1413B} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)

That bad entry is in your Windows System Restore Program, we need to flush it all out.

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

Right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your computer

Turn ON System Restore.

Right-click My Computer.
ClickProperties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Create a new Restore Point <-- Very Important

Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You need to go into the Control Panel and switch to Catagory View to be able to Create a New Restore Point

System Restore Tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html) <-- If you need it

Post a new HJT log and let me know how things are running now???

Hi Ken545,

Thank you for helping me. I have done everything you have asked so far. The system seems to be running fine, but in all fairness it also "seemed" to be running fine before too, but AVG and Malwarebytes were detecting things so I came here. If you need me to run scans of any sort let me know. HJT Log below:

Hello,

Your log looks fine , but if you feel you still have issues we can dig deeper.

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.jpg
Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and install the update
Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

Hi Ken545,

I've ran ATF-Cleaner and updated java as you have suggested. As far as digging deeper, If you feel confident the PC is clean then I'm satisfied with that. I don't know very much about malware so I will have to trust your judgement.

Hello,

It removed some other bad entries, some where in your Temporary Internet Files which ATF Cleaner should have removed. The other being in your System Restore Program which those to should have been removed if you flushed it all out.

How are things running now??

Things appear to be running alright. Strange that stuff was found that should have been taken care of with the ATF cleaner and system restore resetting that I did. I was very careful to follow your instructions every step of the way. I just checked the system restore and the oldest date available is yesterday the 19th. Is there any other scans you feel I should perform at this point?

I think your ok, I will leave this thread open for you for about a week, post back if you feel you still have issues.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
