zlob problem vista [Archive] - Safer-Networking Forums

hi, my daughters laptop has got the zlob trojan, when she opens IE it keeps changing the homepage to a virus scanning site. There is also a security toolbar that has appeared since the trouble began.
Windows defender also pops up a box saying the pc is infected with
"trojandownloader:win32/zlob.bah"
i have run the hijackthis and included the log file.
any help would be very much appreciated

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

John, she has a nasty infection but we are lucky because BleepingComputer has posted an excellant tutorial for removing the junk. Please take the time to read it through a few times before you start.

Before I post the link, I run AVG 8 (free) myself and unless she owns AVG 7, it is out of date. You will then want this information to get her updated as soon as possible.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) Follow the directions at this tutorial:

3) Post a new HJT log and feedback from you about performance.

4) Post also an uninstall list:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thanks for returning this information, before I comment, can you still post the scan results from the MBAM scan so I can have a look?

Uninstall list: I don't see any issues, but I will post this information for you anyway. Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more, here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested.
https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

The HJT log looks good also, there are a couple of items to remove which is why I said this:

(leave TT disabled until we finish)
I see you have it enabled, and to remove the items you will probably need to follow the directions I posted.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Looks like MBAB found junk hidden in the registry. As far as I can see, everything should be well, have her leave MBAM on the Desktop (not running unless purchased) and keep it updated at least once a month. It can be a real lifesaver with some of the junk now. The hackers even block the download of MBAM. If you have no malware issues, I will wish you safe surfing.
