View Full Version : Seems to disable Spybot and Adware

struggling

Please help me with problems. SD alerted me to several unexpected attempts to change my registry settings, all of which I declined. Upon reboot the changes came up again, which declined. Today Zonealarm alerted that there were several attempts to access computer which I declined.

Updated SD Spybot and Adware and running. Both are much slower than usual and then seem to get hungup for long time, then continue again slowly. SD usually takes perhaps 30 minutes now 3+ hours, then grinds to virtual halt………,Cant complete the SD scan……. Adware was so slow I gave up and didn’t complete.

Also on the bottom blue task bar changes have occurred.
Going from left to right are:
Start button, then quick start buttons, then the area showing programs being used, and then lastly the notification area showing progs started at bootup.

The middle area showing the programs being used; I always only had one of these areas, now I have 3 of these areas, and the programs being used show up in two of the 3 areas…..
I cannot get rid of the extra areas and only use one of these areas.

It seems now that ZoneAlarm has been disabled upon boot up. Have to manually start it…….

Thank very much!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

I need to say that you did not bother to reply to Shaba's post to your topic here: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=36204
That is not the way you will get continued support

If you still need help, I will see if I can give you any. First, you understand that Spybot S&D TeaTimer and Zone Alarm are doing what there are supposed to do. Theysee an attempt to access the computer, block it and notify you. You can set the programs to block the junk quietly if you do not want to see the notices.

I am not seeing anything in the HJT log but we will take a look. I need to suggest first that if you have Spybot S&D issues, post those here:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4
For Ad-aware issues, I can suggest:
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showforum=4

Let's have a look like this:

1) Post an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)
Image: http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.jpg

2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Thank you for the information. I apologize for the broken thread with Shaba. We had a tragedy in our family between posts, and I had completely forgotten about the problem. I have sent Shaba a pm and apologized for the lapse.

The thread with Shaba is on my laptop which still has the same problem, and this new one is on my office box.

I will follow insturctions carefully and reply. Due to the sitaution, I am in and out of the office so it may take a little time to do everything. However I will do some each day and advise. Will keep it off line and use another box.

Thank you very much, and again apologize.

I need to post this information as a result of this:

and this new one is on my office box.

http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=25712&postcount=5

Note:
When the infected computer in question is a company machine in the workplace, and you are an employee.

The intention of this forum is not to replace a company's IT department, nor can we anticipate alterations or configurations that may have been made to a business machine, or how it will interact with the tools commonly used in the removal of malware.

More than one machine could be at stake, possibly even the server. If sensitive material has been compromised by an infection, the company could be held liable.

To prevent any possible loss or corruption of company information, please inform your IT department or Supervisor when a workplace computer has been infected, immediately.

Thanks for your understanding.

Thank you for the information, I understand. I am the company, working out of house, on the road, and office. I wish I have an IT department, but alas I am the only "employee". All 3 boxes are stand alone in different locations, only share data files. I hope that we could continue? Greatly appreciate your help. Thanks

I responded to your private message and I only want to say if these computers are networked in anyway, then they all could be infected. I can't really say until I collect more information. Follow the instructions I posted when time permits.

Thanks...Phil

The malware scan checked 121847 objects, this the same objects that AVG, SD, ADware check..? Usually the number is in the 800,000 range.
This varies from program to program, depends on what is in the database.

I am not seeing anything in these logs? Please post the uninstall list requested in my first instruction.

What exactly are your malware problems?

Thanks

Symptoms:
1. Initially the SD and Adware appears to have done it's job by alerting me and I refused to allow registry to be changed. So seems that's not a problem.
2. Immediately after the above happened I noticed that ZoneAlarm was not loaded and didn't load upon reboot.......seemed connected to the incident involving #1. Have to start zonealarm manually each time.
3. Also immediately after #1 both SD and Adaware slowed to a crawl

All of above seemed related, well at least in the same time frame.

So perhaps don't have any after MalwareBytes just removed the 1?
Maybe just uninstall ZoneAlarm and SD and Adware then reinstall and see what happens?

Thanks for the feedback, as far as I can see there is no malware and all programs appear up to date in the uninstall list. Since I see Secunia PSI running which I suggest if I see out of date programs, that is what I would expect.

Let me have a look at the information provided by RSIT.

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your Desktop.
http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Thanks...Phil

I am not seeing anything that looks like malware, first let's take care of this issue.
C:\Stuf\Downloads\HijackThis\Mack.exe <<< this is not a safe location for HJT, please follow these directions.
Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log. <<< close HJT at that point until we need it.

Follow these instructions:
We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish) Once the computer is running better, enable it if you wish. It will drive you crazy with every change so it is best off until then.

I suggest you uninstall Ad-Aware, I personally stopped running it a year ago.

Please start reviewing this information:
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html
http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html

You have Total RAM: 511 MB (47% free) <<< while this may be enough, it is certainly not too much and all of the programs running at startup are using resources. I use my computer for basic computing, no resource intense games or office programs and I have 1.25 MB's of RAM to give you an idea.
http://www.crucial.com/support/howmuch.aspx
Adding RAM to increase computer speed - Video Tip
http://www.helpmerick.com/adding_ram_increase_computer_speed_video_tip.htm

Have a look at this information also, Prefetch can cause issues if it is allowed to accumulate too much.
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

I would like to see you turn off everything in System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) that you do not need each time you boot (security programs must be left to start) This includes programs like Securia PSI that can be started once a month or so to check for any issues. When this is done, please let me know how the computer is running.

I would like to look at a scan result from AVG 8:
*Right click the icon for AVG in System Tray and choose Open AVG User Interface.

*Click on Update now, allow AVG to download and install any new updates.

* Click on Computer Scanner then choose "Scan whole computer", this takes a round one hour on the computer I am using now.

* Near the bottom above the words "The scan is complete" choose "Export overview to file"

* Choose Desktop and give it a name you will recognize like AVG Scan Results, then choose SAVE.

* Close results and close the Interface.

* Copy and paste the contents of that file if I request it or you have something you think I should see.

Post that information unless it is clean.

Thanks...Phil

Why is there a blank entry in my msconfig startup entries?
http://ask-leo.com/why_is_there_a_blank_entry_in_my_msconfig_startup_entries.html

It can be tricky to know all of the items there, Google is a good tool:
http://www.google.com/

There is another trick and I will try to explain. When you are looking at the System Configuration Utility, the Startup Tab, under the word Startup you will see other words...Startup Item - then Command - then Location. If you hold your mouse on the line running N & S between Command and Location you will see a cross. LEFT click and hold it down and you can spread the information to make it easier to see, similiar to resizing a Windows.

Hope that helps...Phil

Have deleted the old hijackthis and relocated according to instructions.
Have disabled ttimer.
Have uninstalled adaware
Have gone through all msconfig and unchecked several, seems to go faster bootup, but forgot to time it before and after, at least it seems faster!

What is the next step? You think most of problems are taken care of?
The box seems much quieter, CPU usage.......which I like! I like to at least think that I know what my computer is doing...

Have been keeping it off line for most of time.
Things that I notice different from before the problems,
Zonealarm still needs to be manually started and SD Spybot still extremely slow. I think after we get as good as possible, I will uninstall both and reinstall and see.

Thanks again
Mack

According to RSIT, there is no problems with those programs.

Just an update, have reinstalled SD and Zonealarm. Now SD is going extremely fast as before, and ZA is loading automatically with each reboot.
So I think that you are right, everything is back better than before and faster it appears! Again, thank you!
