Hi,

I was referred to this forum from another.

[1.]
I have the following problem :

I have run Spybot S&D, which detected a whole lot of spyware etc.,
and I had it removed. It identified and removed all, except 1 entry,
a Sumom A, which it said it couldn't and that I should restart my computer, and it would try to do it on the restart. Suffice to say, it hasn't been able to.
So to date, I haven't been able to get rid of this.
Should I be worried about this infection ?
Should I try to remove it, and if so, can you please help me to do so ?

I am also worried if this is damaging computer ? I don't know ?

I don't seem to be getting any "symptoms" of infection ie my computer seems
to be working fine (is it ok for me to say this/write to this forum ?),
except that Spybot has picked this up.

I alternatively only have Norton Antivirus 2002, which I am told, in another forum, is virtually useless. Is that true ?

I do have a firewall.

Also, I have the following problem:

I am thinking of buying a laptop (new), and I would imagine, I would
need to have Spybot installed on there too. Now I am wondering how
I can get Spybot running on a new laptop, without possibly also having it infected by something (spyware etc), because I might need to connect to internet to download it, and at that point, I would have no Spybot on it, until it's downloaded, so I would be vulnerable ?

I was thinking of somehow copying a Spybot file, that I would have downloaded onto my old machine, to the new one, so that I can have Spybot installed on my new machine, before I connect to the internet.
Does that sound like a good plan ?

Also, on this Sumom A entry, I am worried if it might have infected
files that I have copied onto disk eg PDF files; Word files etc -- files
related to my work ? Would that be the case, or would these files/disks
be clean ? Would I need to obtain a new antivirus system, if my Norton Antivirus 2002, is obsolete ? (Problem is, I have rather limited money).

Is there any cheap/free antvirus software (like your very good Spybot)
that I can get, if my Norton Antivirus 2002, is too old, that you can recommend ?

I am worried that for example, if I have copied files from my old machine, to disk, and then use my disks, on my new machine, that that might infect my new machine ? Is that possible, with this Sumom A thing ?

Besides my Norton Antivirus 2002, I don't have an alternative
antivirus program; so might my machine be infected with something
else also ?

As I say, it seems to be running ok.
